What all do I need to do/buy to install an aftermarket radiator cooling fan on my genesis coupe 2.0T? I'm going to be installing a Koyo radiator and i want to run a slim fan such as this one here: Mishimoto Slim Electric Fan 12", Red
My concern is the factory fan assembly. There is the wiring that goes to the fan motor and then another branch of wiring that comes from the fan motor to a sensor of some sort? Anyone know what it is? Importance? Because if I remove my factory fan assembly I will lose that "sensor". What does it do and is it needed? Thanks guys and gals!
The factory fan is bulky. This is a track car. I'm dropping as much weight as I can. I'm trying to simplify my setup as much as possible and also gain clearance. I'm wanting a slim fan to clean up the engine bay. There might not be anything wrong with the factory setup. But it's ugly, heavier, and takes up more room. Since this is just a resistor box I'd say wiring it into a new slim fan would be easy.
What is the point in switching from Lo Speed to High Speed anyways? When does it switch?
I was thinking of wiring my new slim fan into the OEM fan wiring harness and just ditching that resistor/relay/whatever it is that's in the factory setup. In essence the fan would only run on high when its needed. Or would it run on high ALL the time? Like constantly on when the car is on?
I have a BTRcc tune. I'm not worried about noise. But if I run the fan without that resistor pack will it be fine? Yes it will run on high, I am aware of that, but any issues come from that?
I have two leds in between the tcs switch and dimmer wheel. One is for the low speed fan relay ground and the other is the high speed relay ground. This shows when the ECU turns on the fans. It's pretty complicated especially with the low speed fan.
But for the 2010s at least if the low speed resistor would go out then you would loose the low speed fan. In town you would overheat the engine.
As I said I have some LEDs wired up that are hot all the time and then when the ECU grounds the fan relay coil ground the led for that relay comes on. This is a good way to tell what's going on, I need to add another for when the AC clutch coil is on.
Well as I run the fans now the lo speed fan relay is pulled out. The high speed is controlled both by the ECU and my manual controller.
You can see the ECU cycle the lo speed fan led on when the AC is on and this is due to pressure readings I'm sure. If the pressure gets high enough the hi speed fan comes on and I believe the AC cuts out.
Anyway, this confirms when the ECU commands the fans on. BUT when the AC is off and the engine is running, if I plug my lo speed fan relay in, the lo speed fan comes on, due to the PA programming bug. And BUT II the led for the lo speed fan relay never comes on.
I don't understand where the ground is coming from as the led doesn't light up??????
Here's the resistor. Very easy to remove as it is held in with one 8mm screw and then lifts out with a bit of rotation. To bypass it just jumper the two contacts in the plug with some 1/4" male spade connectors and some 14 ga wire. It will just run at hi speed then.
The resistor reads 0.7 ohms and there is also a thermo fuse underneath of it.
I'm not exactly sure. The one fan pretty much just died. The second was intermittent for a long while. I opted to just buy replacements and so far zero issues, but it's only been a few months. The fans for my heat exchanger though run flawlessly and they get exposed to much more than my rad fans.
There are two relays for the fan. Hi and lo speed. Both should have power when the key is on. Lo speed relay output to the resistor circuit has power when the hi speed is on. Relay is activated by a ground to the coil.
It is only a single winding motor so the lo speed is actually a voltage reduced 10v or so. This is done by a resistor that is in the back of the fan shroud passenger side. If you disconnect this and jumper the connector with a wire then you will always get the hi speed fan.
