BTR canned tune on a 2013 3.8 AT

First off, let me say I am completely going off a "I just drove the stock tune and then 15 minutes later the canned tune" experience, but holy **** is the throttle response improved. 1st gear in manual mode feels unusable in traffic situations because it's damn near instant with a blip of the throttle. The laggy throttle is fixed and this is worth it alone for me.

The butt dyno says the mid range is improved greatly. What's weird is the exhaust note is different now. It's not as low as it was before. I don't mind, as I feel like some of the drone has been helped. If I ever get a day off to go to a dyno, I will post some numbers. I am excited to see how the car performs after some mileage. I work 7 days a week though and am in school, so a dyno day is probably a pipe dream at this time.

For reference, my mods are the Injen SRI, phenolic IM spacer, ported TB, coolant bypass, shaved IAT, and a muffler delete with 3" piping.

Honestly, no real reason. It was $200 more than SFR, but I'd rather not start any sort of bad blood between anyone here by claiming more over another company. I am sure that an SFR tune would put a smile on my face as well, but I'm telling you, if you have the same setup as me you're going to be really happy with the BTR results!

I went with SFR, but mostly for the reason of not wanting Epoxy squeezed into the ECU and blocking the ports. I think that's a pretty sketchy thing to do, actually.

However, I noticed a difference with the SFR tune over stock, but it wasn't as much as I had hoped. Not sure if they're just more mild...but if it weren't for the epoxy issue, I'd have gone with BTR.

Also, getting detailed info from SFR via e-mail was pretty much non-existent. I requested a list of ECU values that were changed, like the new red-line limit, AFR settings, etc...mostly just wanted to compare to stock, but I didn't even get a response.

same reason I went with SFR, didn't want my ecu messed with but I also didn't want the expense of an extra ecu.

As far as what gets changed, most tuners won't tell you anything. Jay gave me a lot of info when I met with him at the tune event here in socal though.

Epoxy in the ports? I had never heard of that! I compared the 2 ECUs side by side before I installed the new one and I could not notice a difference, no lie! The only difference was sticker placement of the part #. Perhaps the epoxy issue was resolved after a couple of incidents? Or perhaps it's only occurred during a custom tune?

I had no choice but to buy an extra ECU for the canned tune. I don't get any days off so a trip to either BTR or SFR was out of the question. I also couldn't send in my ECU because this is my only vehicle :)

I wouldn't expect either of the companies to reveal the actual details of what's changed. They have the market cornered on any tuning option.

well, they use super glue over the BDM ports so no one can download their tune. I'm not sure if they do that any more, but at the time that is what they did so I went another way.

However, they are supposedly coming out with a handheld soon like a diablo type of product which if is true, I'll be on board. I'm still in the air about what to do with the motor next, but it'll either be a s/c or a stroker kit and I'll need a way to get tune updates and tweaks so this works out great.

I think there's a post on here somewhere where it shows that they actually remove an IC from the ECU's board, then they epoxy the ports.

But yeah, if they come out with a handheld unit, I'd likely buy one.

BTR def used to epoxy the ports. Best way to contact Jay is thru PM. At the end of the day it's still a GC so tunes results will be all relative.

I'm in for their handheld option as well. Either way, I'm very happy with the results from BTR.

Newbie here - everything I've seen so far has involved either sending in your ECU or purchasing a second. Is there a handheld option (like a Cobb AP) yet?

you will not be disappointed with either tune...i think all post tune folks are relatively happy

Nope lol

Regarding the hand-held option, would the best case scenario be to use a local dyno shop to utilize the device to tune my car, so that real numbers could be seen? I mean sure, I could fiddle around with it at home but I have no clue what to adjust and no way to test adjustments either...

Yeah I prefer the old school yes and no type questions on a hand held. I don't wanna **** something up or blow it up, locally we don't have anyone that has a clue with tuning. Will this have "staged" canned tunes as well? Removeal of the shift lag Hyundai has? Better throttle response?

They may be doing a custom tuning event in your area soon. You could save that cash for the event and get better results, if you were inclined. I have the canned tune and am going custom when they hold their North Carolina event in November. Their Facebook page is where I would ask them questions about when they might hold an event in your state.

I'm not saying the canned won't help though! It's definitely worth it from my perspective :)

It was VERY noticeable. Like I said up above, the throttle response became instant. I know the canned tunes don't add much in the way of raw HP and torque, maybe 10-15, but it was a ear to ear grin as soon as i took off down the road.
