Just got my genesis 2 weeks ago and for the next 3 years I'm getting a free wax every 6 months from the dealership but before that, I would always use Turtle Wax that cost $3.50 per container or something for my 93 Chevy Lumina. Nothing fancy.
Although I used Meguire's for a good portion of my life, near the end I switched to Autogeek products. I usually use something without carnauba because that makes me angry when I try to take it off. To substitute for the deep look, I used Meguires Glaze.
You know how they throw in lifetime free car washes with the purchase of a car at some dealerships. Do any of you actually get your car washed there? I'm kind of worried, but honestly, I don't feel like standing outside at a self serve in 12 degree weather.
Yesterday I purchased a Meguiar's Clay Bar Kit and today tried to clay bar and wax my entire car with my cheap $3.50 Turtle Wax carnauba wax. Well, I thought I could do it all today but after 6.5 hours, I had enough and decided I would finish up tomorrow. I managed to get half of it clay barred and waxed (roof, hood, trunk, driver side fenders, rocker panel, and the door). All that's left now is everything on the passenger side and the two bumpers.
In terms of looks, it looks a little cleaner but ultimately, it feels cleaner, absolutely smooth. The car feels like its a car you would touch at a manufacturer auto show such as the Chicago Auto Show. Definitely worth the money and effort.
Since you referenced the Chicago Auto show, I have to ask. Are you in the Chicagoland area? And carnauba wax is awesome, I just hate taking the crap off. You go through detailing towels like crazy because if you don't, the oil still remains on there. You should try substituting for Meguire's glaze before apply non-carnauba wax. It saves you a lot of time.
I live on the southwest side of Chicago by Harlem and I-55.
I've never gone through a gas station car wash for that reason alone (scratches and chips) with even my old '93 Lumina. I just did not trust it at all. Also, I tried getting my GC washed at the dealership a few days before Christmas and there was a 45 minute wait so I said "screw this, i'm out of here" and haven't been back since.
For winter car washes, I would still try to wash my car at an automatic car wash. The best thing to do is look for one that is touchless or brushless, strictly spray based.
P.S. I just got my GC fully clayed and waxed an hour ago. She looks beautiful. I took her out for a spin and almost all the drivers were staring at it. It gaving me the biggest smile you could imagine. lol Once I run out of my Turtle Wax Super Hard Shell carnauba wax, I'm going to try and find wax thats a little easier to remove and shinier cause I agree, this stuff's a bi*** to remove. lol
When I was 16, I used to wash the car twice a week in the middle of winter as well at a self serve. The fun part was washing away the frozen soap, it took forever.
OMG! And in 10 months my cars never even been rained on. I used the CG V-38 for that step, I have the PO85RD too, but went with the CG this time after the the the MZ2500. Swirl marks were at a minimum, nothing major. My ride is a garge queen, it's only been washed once too. Oh yeah and it was 82 and sunny today.
I detailed a fellow member's car here in the summer. The car was so shiny that I couldn't even look at it straight because it was way too bright and hurting my eyes. Not exaggerating on that one.
I always use Mother's car wax becuase I trust only that brand wax. I like that wax because of it performance and shine. I also used many other brands but not find any other more good then mothers wax.
