2.0T VS 3.8 - Pros & Cons

Noticed there's been a lot of 2.0T vs 3.8 threads lately, so I was thinking about starting up an official versus thread. The idea is to be able to just post this thread in any that pop up and then lock those threads. Hopefully If this is done right it could be sticked?

Any input would be great, and I can edit this original post after I get all the correct information in.

I'll start off with the first bit-

2.0T is lighter and has slightly better weight distribution

Curb weight (lbs., MT/AT)
2.0T 3294 / 3362
3.8 3389 / 3397

Why reshash all the info, it's already there. This thread would be awesome if it wasn't going to require every to retype what they already said in 10 other threads. Getting one of the 10+ page threads stickied would be a much better idea.

It's been done... Just need to pull info from existing threads, otherwise we're just rehashing old information, IMO.

Here's a few threads to pull info from. There are like 5 more I'll try to dig up later tonight.

I know, I was thinking of trying to put all that information in one spot, minus any opinions. Then editing the title and clearing out all of the other posts.

There's your problem. Because what it ultimately comes down to is preference.

If you're afraid of doing more than I/H/E and want big power, get the V6.
If you're afraid of doing more than I/H/E and don't care about big power get the 2.0T
If you're shooting for 300-325whp it's a toss up, as after mods they are essentially the same price.
If you're shooting for 325whp-400whp and don't want to use nitrous or crack the engine open, get the 2.0T.
If you're shooting for 450+ and want a broad autox friendly powerband, get the V6.
If you're shooting for 450+ and don't mind a little turbo lag you can get the 2.0T there cheaper

here's a novel idea MAKE A STICKY TITLED "SEARCH FOR 3.8 VS. 2.0, NO NEW THREADS REQUIRED" i think everyone on this forum is sick of these threads popping up and the only thing i ever hear before it turns into an argument is "use the search button"

not again!

<JAHSGILFDGFH SAJFHBKAFBSAFDSAJLFwsaf;hawshflskjahs!!!!!111!1!1one11!one1one!!!!!

Enough with the ghey comparo threads already. Wow, in my entire history of browsing the internet (and I frequent A LOT of forums) I have NEVER seen an issue so beaten to death.

I get what you are trying to do here, but the sticky idea isn't something new. Either the mods don't care or they have a sick sense of humor and love to see the flame wars that these threads all degenerate into. It has gotten so bad that I am determined to bait them all as soon as I see them pop up so they implode as quickly as possible, get locked, and then fade into obscurity. Or until the next noob that don't know how to use search comes along...

Each version of the car is focused towards different peoples interest. I wanted a 300+ horse power car that I could drive out of the box so to speak and ONLY worry about exterior mods since the car already had a LSD, BREMBO's, etc.

Just adding a post in case someone clicks on this thread-

Really not trying to be rude, but as others said, search.

Even if you don't use the search function, looking through "General Discussion" for just 2 minutes will show at least 5 threads with almost the exact same title.

MODS: Please, for the love of all members sanity, sticky some of the threads below:

I made it to this thread after reading 5 others and am still acquiring information. I can attest that the search function works to the point at which I can read SEVERAL threads over a period of an hour (or more while cross referencing and performing 'other search comparisons') and wish the whole time it was all collated and consolidated in one thread without all the complaints.

A large majority of these threads are jacked by people tired of answering who whine in great length and don't provide any useful information. If you're going to post, write something constructive or DON'T WRITE AT ALL. You don't have to concern yourself with any particular thread. I will state that the majority of those fed up with the question more than likely have a considerable amount of helpful information to share and is generally greatly appreciated when done so.

It'd be nice to have:
1) 2.0t and 3.8 with their trim levels and what each one contains
2) A basic list of mods, power reached and dollar spent comparison
3) Objective assessment of pros and cons

This is information I seek which I have not found in it's entirety anywhere on this forum. I have collected data from all over the Internet and only half of that have I found in the threads I read in the '2.0t, 3.8 comparison forum'.

on 2.0t with 6k u be pushing 600 whp
No you wont. If so, wheres all these 600hp 2.0t gen coupes at? I've seen one that's pushing mid 400's from a local.

You can barely get that with an Evo or DSM reliably, and they have actual aftermarket to support.

no replacement for displacement... but not really a productive argument. angels on a pin...
if you're ready to void your warranty, it's not hard to build a 2.0 past a 3.8 with bolt-ons.
not hard to build a 3.8 past the reach of a 2.0.
2.0 has a little more compatibility with other platforms.

Im not into modding. I test drove the 2.0t manual followed by the 3.8 auto and went with the 3.8. Seemed to have the zippiness I was after. I went into the dealer thinking id be leaving with the turbo model... I mean turbo should mean it's faster, right? Well not my conclusion after the test drive. Again im not into modding... if you are perhaps the turbo is the way to go.

#34 ·
Well for one, no, turbo does not always mean faster.

In these cars, the turbo 4cyl only produces ~275hp. The 3.8 produces ~350hp.

Secondly, there's torque multiplication factors involved with transmission choices and numbers of gears, manual being 6spd and auto being 8speed. Having more gears that are shorter but spaced more closely will give more of a "zippy" or "torquey" feeling than less gears that are taller, especially considering a good automatic can have you always in the best torque area dependent on the situation. Still, nothing beats banging gears in a manual....

Modding wise, the turbo is the preferred platform. You can do more with a car that comes factory forced-induction, for far less spent, than one that does not.
