Moving in a month so it's not an issue. =P Had to pack everything on the shelf so I could get the car in a few days ago. We got 4-5 inches of snow... in October... in NY.

you wouldn't want to use f1.4 on a pan.

what your seeing camera shake + off focus. just make sure to use the AI focus or al servo focus settings

car looks great though. and the Aperture is correct settings are almost dead on. easier to hit the focus with a smaller aperture and you don't need the DOF with a pan.

here were your settings, i think you were just moving the lens too fast to try to get movement @ 1/100

Code:
Auto exposure, Shutter priority AE, 1/100 sec, f/8, ISO 800
try switching to manual then 1/80, f/5-f/8, IS0400-600 unless you can get it lower(just try to get between 0 and +1 EV with the ISO) then have them drive around 35mph

just try manual though... honestly it is easier with pans especially if the light keeps changing.

What Blu said and plus some.

My pans tend to be ISO 100-200, 1/50 to 1/100 shutter, and whatever f/stop works within that, depending on conditions. If you're not sure, and don't want to go manual and chance losing the shot to over- or under- exposure, definitely go shutter priority, but manually set everything except f/stop.

not a example of a photograph, but a good example of panning settings:

Exposure 0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture f/22.0
Focal Length 65 mm
ISO Speed 200
Exposure Bias -1/3 EV

Also, try (and I don't know how your stance is when shooting) tucking your elbows tight to your body, and turning from the waist. Give yourself some distance too, so you're not trying to follow the subject too quickly to stay steady. Smooth transitions will give you your best shots.

And practice. So. Much. Practice.

He said it was pretty dark, he'd probably underexpose at f/5-8. And 1/80 shutter. I wouldn't make this shot at 1.4. Most likely around 2.8 as that's where my lens gets super sharp and the DOF isn't blade thin.
Ai servo is a def though.
