What the hell did I just do?!

Last weekend I thought it's about time I sell my '01 MB SLK230. I loved the **** out of that car and stated on numerous occasions that I would drive that car into the ground and never give it up.

Last night I just rolled out of the dealer with the showroom Genesis Coupe Ultimate with the slushbox.

I did not expect to walk into the dealer and walk out the same day with that car. I knew I wanted that car after doing the research, but I never thought I would REALLY sell the roadster, nor that I would buy it right then and there.

Oh God what have I done?!?

I only got to wave at my little Firemist Red SLK as they drove it to the garage (taps is playing now during the NASCAR race while i type this; how fitting). I am still mourning that I did not get to give it a proper goodbye as it becomes scrap for parts.

Then, they drove my new car out of the showroom into the parking lot and gave it the once and twice over. She's Empire State Gray. I like her alot. But I'm not in love yet. I'm still in love with the SLK. She was aged, and hurting for maintenance. But she was sexy.

I get into the coupe. I hooked my phone up to bluetooth and found myself getting attracted. I played with the HVAC controls. They work! What a joy to have defrosters and fully working environmental control. I'm getting to know this car. She talks to me. That cold robotic voice penetrates my soul, asking me to command her. I find myself wanting to stay with her, to be with her and not leave her.

Pull onto my block, let her open up and hear her shout with that throaty grunt. I'm liking this. I pull up and walk inside; stare at her from my bedroom window for what seems like ages.

So yeah, I bought a Genesis Coupe! I'm still kind of in shock from the whole thing and this all feels so very surreal but I like this car. And I really like that it's not old and broken down. Everything works! (except the nav, they can't find the SDCard since it was the floor model... or the battery since it's never been able to charge on the floor...)

But I think I'm happy with my purchase, I'm really liking this and it's definitely a big change from a hot wheels sized 200hp roadster to a bit bigger 4 seater (lol 4 seater) ~350hp.

Now one question, and I hope yall might indulge me so I can get to know you with a question. It's snowing like nuts here and I know this thing is factory fitted with summer tires. I was going out for a morning drive and the snow hit earlier than they said and this car is NOT happy. Got stuck looking for grip in a few places and it definitely got a little tail happy.
What do yall recommend for good winter tires on this car? My old car was never worth spending the money for good winter tires so I settled for all seasons, but this car demands good winter rubber.

And any other comments you have about what I might want to know about this car would be great too, while I also read the forums.

I may not post here much going forward but I will certainly be reading the forums and learning as much as I can about this fantastic vehicle from everyone here.

Congrats on the purchase. Everyone that drives theirs in the winter (I'm not one) seems to go the route of extra cheap wheels and also blizaks or similar. Check your local craigslist, might find a good deal. There is a nice cheap set on my local craigslist right now, tempted to buy for the wife's veloster turbo.

Ha, good to know. Definitely going to get the cheapest wheels I can find. And hell, even tirerack recommends blizzaks, so I guess dozens and dozens of drivers and a trusted website can't be wrong.
When I'll be able to actually get them fitted is another question. I am so tired of snow. There are no words for how tired of snow I am. And cold. Climate change can die in a fire. Driving is difficult, walking is tough. And I got run over by a minivan in November so walking around is tough enough already!
I'm going to move to a little tropical island. I'm going to build a little dirt track around the shoreline and figure out how to run an engine on coconut milk. Who's with me?

Edit: Is the $179/yr bluelink worth it? Being able to get into a warm car on these awful days would be very nice. I mean it does heat up fairly quick... way quicker than the 15 minutes the SLK would take but I'm already spending enough on this and another $15/mo does not make me happy on top of the payments I'm already obligated to

Yes and no, I think the service is overpriced, that being said I have the assurance and remote portions of it anyway, I like the remote start, being able to lock it remotely if I think I forgot, and the emergency services for when I eventually wrap it around something. I won't pay for the navigation because it's terrible compared to my phone.

Up to you at the end of the day though, I would suggest deciding before your initial period is over, they will auto bill you for renewing all of it unless you log in or call to opt out of all or part of it, you can call up and get a refund if you forget though.

As far as bluelink - I could care less about anything besides the remote package. The guidance package is total garbage because the NAV still works without it - you just can't send an address from your phone (you actually have to type it in while in the car. oh no!) But the remote package allows you to lock or unlock your car no matter how far away from it you are (which comes in handy when you forgot if you locked it or someone is running to your car to get something). The remote start is wonderful in cold weather as well as warm weather. It allows the oil to heat up as well if you are planing on spirited driving.

Every once in a while, I'll push the button on the mirror and ask them dumb questions like "Hey what's the size of the map lights in here?" or "Help me with a map update". They also remind you of service, oil change, ect ect. It's nice but obviously not necessary.

All that being said - Bluelink is nice to have, but even with my higher opinion of it, it's still overpriced. I pay it anyway - but feel badly about it every time it rolls around.

I think you actually mean, "You couldn't care less about Blue Link".

You say you feel "Badly" every time you pay for Blue Link. Perhaps your "Common Sense" is trying to tell you something.

As far as unlocking a car is concerned, no matter how far away I am from it, again common sense has to play a major role, at least in my case.

If you cannot see your car or are too far away from it to protect it or any valuables inside, why would you want to unlock it???? Can't you just give the key to someone you trust if you want them to go get something??

If you don't trust that particular person with your car key, why would you trust a stranger in a distant parking lot who might hear or see your car being unlocked remotely?

Yah, I know. So many questions, so little time.

As far as the money is concerned for Blue Link service, the dealership will remind you when it is getting close, or should be getting close to a service interval. Also, asking "dumb" questions should be rethought. In addition, a few minutes at idling will not warm your car enough to do spirited driving the first thing on a COLD morning.

BTW, if it is really cold, don't forget that the roads will probably be slippery from frost, at the very least. Spirited driving is also "Dumb" on cold days.

Seriously, are most of these "Dumb" things really worth almost $200 per year? Perhaps you have heard of the bridge I have for sale.

$200 a year and you can start/lock/unlock from anywhere? Does Canada not have this service or was I just not informed?

So many opinions! Thanks fellas.
I think for now, maybe I can do without the remote stuff. I've never had it before so I can't be missing it. And I already feel spoiled with all the gadgets in there I've never had so I feel OK skipping it.

Now I just wish I could drive the damned thing. Snow, snow, more snow, physical therapy, snow... all I can do is stare at it from my window. Sure is pretty to look at though!

I actually just opted for bluelink earlier this month, I have been liking it quite a bit even though I have heated seats (which is awesome), nothing like getting into a nearly completely warm car when its frigid outside. Also, for those of you who have an Android Wear smartwatch, you can now do just about everything from it (promotes a serious case of laziness however).

Congrats! Hyundai definitely made a stellar car with the Genesis Coupe.
