I decided against in the end getting a winter beater. Mostly cause of justification reasons.

(being single + Genesis Coupe + winter beater + eventually get a sport bike = 3 vehicles + 1 person doesn't make sense)

Anyone find any winter / rim deals? I want to jump on it sooner then later.

There's a group buy going at simplytire via rfd in Mississauga.

I saw one car quoted with similar tire specs to ours

2010 A5 - 17" Alloy 225-50-17 Hankook W300 - $1,270.00

Another group buy was doing a run to the US to buy from Tirerack

#46 ·
I'm basing the specs on Tirerack.com when I was looking for winter's

Tirerack indicated that for 17" I should be running 225/50R17 front and 225/55R17 rear.

Since the A5 dude got the same tire specs, the pricing should be the same. I'm not sure if the GT can fit 17, I assume it would but GT is 19" stock.

See what tirerack tells you to get for winter tire package.

I got a deal from nokian distributor, any set of tires you want for free.

only 17" hakkapeliitta have the right dimension and now I have to find a set of 17" that fits over the train stopping brembo calipers.

I was looking at a set of tiburon tuscani rims, anyone know if those fits?

Otherwise, the dealer suggests 1360$ + 160$ installation for toyo garrit kx in the 18", oh and 80$ per steely rim, that's another 320$, with taxes, that comes up to close to 2k

I really would like nokian with 17", I'm a big time tougei drifter when there's 1 foot of snow on the ground.

#49 ·
I just test fit a pair of 17"s.

They will fit, but you have a 3 mm clearance. So you will never have proper balance as you can't get proper weights in place.

18" or bust for the Brembos.
That is a 17" rim PERIOD. If you want more distance between the caliber and rim you NEED an 18" rim. Look closely at where the balancing weight is located.

#67 ·
not that I don't believe u Charlybrown but unless I know for a fact from other members that 17's will fit on the brembos, I'm not taking any chances. Hyundai has taken out a bulletin recommending 18's on the GT (Track) if installing winters. Has anyone been able to verify that 17's fit?
I believe the balancing weights are close in the third dimension, between the spokes, shouldn't touch the caliper.

I went to the dealer yesterday and I sorta shaken down the parts guy's belief that only 18" will fit, he was acctually happy to hear some 17" will fit. then I asked if he had any tangible proofs or what not, and he told me I was the first one to order a GT version so it's going to be a trial and error procedure.

In my case I will be trying on different 17" from second hand wheels I can find on the net.

yes I know the clearance will be small, but apparently a porsche can run with 2 paper thickness of clearence, and that picture def show that 1/4" clearence to me, keep in mind 17" wheel are large, relatively that clearence is good enough.

Also notice how the clearence is not at the bottom most position by rather close at a 45deg angle, when wheels are bent, the clearence variation at the bottom will be highest, but as it approach to the horizontal plane, the clearance will change less and less.

I'm getting my car this week, so I'll be trying tires all week end. I'll update on the experimental results.

that's the stock sizes, yes

have any of you tried finding out what the tires alone would cost from the dealer and what brands they have available? It almost seems like getting it from the dealer would be cheaper than some of the tire shops

Yokohama Iceguard - 225/50/R17 Front - 225/55/R17 Back = $1,419 + tax

Falken HS439 + 17" Hyundai Alloys - 225/50/R17 Front - 225/55/R17 Back = $1,619 + tax

For winter tire and packages, shoot us an email and we'll work out the

test fitted 17" Steelies on a 2.0T (non-brembo) and you won't have any

We also have 18" winter alloys that will clear your Brembo's with ease!

Shoot me a PM with your email!

Got a pretty good price for black alloy rims and Toyo Garrit KX tires. Better than anything I've seen here. I'll be doing the mounting, installation and balancing myself, and obviously not paying any mark-up at all. He called the dealership as well to see what they were offering, and got the same Falken/Yoko information. I prefer Toyos.

I will talk to the old man tonight and see what he could hook you guys up with.

I've used the Toyos on my other car, and they are amazing. TONS of traction, and TONS of tread left after 2 full seasons. Better tires than what the dealers are offering. Also, Toyo always has some sort of deal on winter tires where you get $ back via rebate. In the past it's been $80 for me, this time I suspect it will be $100. Something to factor in as well.

ya, check it out paulster2626! I live near 401/Mississauga Rd (Brampton) and if U could get a better price I'm in!!!

Rims in the dealer package come in both gun metal and regular silver for $840 for 4 = $210 each

Michelin X-Ice they recommend the following:

FF 225/45 R18 - $484.86 = $242.43
RR 245/45 R18 - $527.06 = $263.53

I changed the rears though to 225/45/R18 which brought the price down almost $40. Not much but still. $969.72 for rubber.

Total cost $1809.72 + 1 hr labour.

Hold off on that one - I might be able to get you a better price than that, plus you'll have better tires. I'll post here tonight or tomorrow with some details. Although, you will have to drive out to 401/Mississauga Rd., and I'm not sure if you'd even be able to fit your stock tires in your car to take them home. Better buy some of those "tire tote" things so you don't mess up your interior!

Hey guys - alright here's the deal.

Pops has got the rims and tires in now - we want to test-fit the rim first before we mount the tires, just to make sure the offset is okay and it clears the caliper. I want to see what the underside of my car looks like anyway, so I plan on going to the shop to do this today after work. I'm trying to get a camera to take some pics for you guys so you'll know what the wheels look like, but we might have to settle with my iPhone for photos.

Tires are Toyo Garit KX, and 18" should have an $80 mail-in rebate. I've said it before and I'll say it again, these tires are the shiznit - got me out of some incredible jams in the past, and treadwear longevity is fantastic. With a 3300lb car, RWD shouldn't be an issue for these babies.

He said he could do the winter tire package for about $1900, I'll double-check that when I'm there later and get an exact price for you guys. This price is including all taxes and that B.S. tire tax, etc. The rebate is something you do yourself after, so it's not factored in to the price so no worries there.

Might be a little bit more money than what you could get elsewhere, but I can promise you that you're getting great tires, and the job will be done properly.

You've got lots of time, so don't worry - last year got sketchy due to the new QC snow-tire requirement, but this year production is all caught up. Jimbo has never had a problem getting tires and rims anyway.

Okay guys, here's the deal. Went to the shop today on my way home, and checked out the product - rims are silver in colour, and aluminum alloy made in China. They are extremely light, I was surprised. Anyhow, first step was to test the caliper clearance:

Plenty of room! Time to mount the tires.

Here's the back tire mounted and sitting on the car - notice the similarity to the stock wheel:

And here is the car with the wheels <sort of> on:

So that's that. All in all a good package I think. As far as price is concerned, my dad worked it out to be $1749 + taxes, which would be PST+GST+$5.84 tire tax x 4. So all together you're looking at $1999.73 for everything all-in. That is for 4 18" rims, Toyo Observe Garit KX tires (225 45 18 Front, 245 45 18 Rear), mounting, valve stems, balancing, installation. Toyo is also offering an $80 mail-in rebate if you buy 4 tires until December 15, so you can factor that in as well. It takes them 8 weeks to send it out though, so by the time it comes, you've forgotten all about it and it's like free money!

The tires really are top-notch, and something I don't like to skimp out on is my rubber. I consider it to be the most important safety aspect of the car. You can read about the tires here:
OBSERVE GARIT KX | Toyo Tires
The grip is fantastic and the treadwear is really good - they'll last twice as long as Blizzaks.

If you want the name and number of the shop, just send me a PM and I'll hook it up.

Off-topic: We were really impressed with the construction and engineering of this car when looking at it underneath. Transmission is right there in your face, and the beefed-up control arms are nice. I was surprised to see such a nice exhaust as well - Hyundai has really come a long way!!

Sorry but they won't last twice as long. You would be lucky to get 25% more treadlife.

That's about the same quote I went with. Do you have a break down of tires and rims paulster2626?

I think where you saved on rims in your quote, I spent more on rims since they are from Hyundai (I tend to bend rims in the winter, but the only time I did that was on bald winter tires). I think the Toyo's will be up around $300 /each and rims around $150 /each in your quote.

That's about the same quote I went with
Rudy did you go with 225/45/R18 all around? Would there be any issues with TC light going off with that setup?
