Nice, so they are like tires from that commercial where the investors are all for some reason out in the middle of nowhere talking about snow tires as a car drives around in a circle, and then one of 'em says "pffft - Sweden only has 1 million people", and then the other dude says "hey isn't that Russia over there - we have a deal". But I digress...
Ideally we will have everyone in the Canadian forums all get different snow tires so we can meet up one February afternoon for a Snow-Tire-Off. That is, if we can all get out of our driveways with a RWD sportscar...
I've had both. A set of Blizzaks on my 2003 Tiburon 4 cyl, and a set of Toyo's (G02 plus) on my 2004 Tiburon V6 and I would not hesitate to run Toyo's any day over Blizzaks...
If you want to figure out the best size for winter rubber compared to your stock size, use this helpful calculator:
Tread wear is all subjective. It's hard to gauge what the tread wear life is on snow tires as you have so many factors that can affect the tread life:
-Personal driving habits
-Distance travelled (hwy vs. city)
-Type of winter (heavy snow falls vs. milf winter)
-Road conditions
Toyo's are very good snow tires, but very pricey! The walnut compound is just  for snow!
I am also tempted to go with same sized winter tires on all 4 corners; more options, cheaper, and possibility to rotate the tires....
I am daily checking all classified adds daily for a lucky set of Gislaved/Toyo/Nokian in the used department. It's near impossible to find a used set when looking for 225/245.
It will screw up your stock alignment and may mess up the the traction control computer though.
I would like some honest opinions on Blizzaks, I have notice alot of negative opinions in this thread in reference to these winter tires. I am little concerned because I just ordered a set of 225/55 17"s with steel rims from a local tire store in Ajax. Are Blizzaks a bad winter tire? My impression was that they were one of the better winter tires. Any input would greatly appreicated.(just got my Red 3.8 last Wed. LOVE THE CAR!!)
They're good winter tires, but they are definitely over rated. They seem to be the go-to tire for the winter. The way I see it, Blizzaks are to winter tires as Kleenex are to facial tissues, they're just one of the many "good" options but they become the default for many people.
I'm running them for my car too, but really only because I got a screaming deal on them (225/45/18F and 245/45/18R Blizzak LM-22 on TSW Revo 18" rims, for $840 with 3000kms use on them).
The Swiss cheese multicell compound disappears when the tires are about 55 per cent worn, and from that point forward the tires behave more like generic snow tires, relying more on the tread pattern than advanced rubber compounds to provide the grip.
Where these tires fall a bit short of the mark is in ice traction. Accelerating and stopping on slick ice proved to be more of a challenge than with some other tires I’ve tested (the Hakkapelliitta RSi comes to mind), although they are so much better than all-seasons that I have trouble faulting them in this regard. Having said that though, the Blizzaks didn’t perform significantly better than the Canadian Tire Goodyear Nordics that I had on my car last season.
WHere do you live? Since we've all got the same car, and are all buying winter tires brand new at the same time, we should keep track of where we live and how much we drive to do a full Genesis Coupe comparison!
For anyone around Montreal, I just had a lengthy conversation with a local tire shop. They offer a great package for non-brembo equipped car.
Nokian Hakkapeliita 5 studded (best winter tire for snow+ice, not a dry pavement performance tire though like the Yokohama W-Drive or Toyo Garit KX, pure snow plowers)
front: 225/50/17
back: 225/55/17
4 black steel rim
installed+balanced+Nitrogen fill-up
1611$ tax in (add to this Nokian's 50$ mail in rebate)
Woah!....your saying 17" steels are that close to the single piston caliper! I was thinking of calling my dealer to change my tire package to black steels and go over to Toyo Garritt KX, but I'm hesitant to do that, and just ask them to swap it over to the Toyo's!
i just found a guy thats selling a set of used Nokia Hakkapalittas 225/50/17 (tires only) for $500 obo... supposedly only used for 1 season.... good deal?
I was quoted roughly the same thing here in Ottawa. Only thing I got dif is that I went for the winter rims instead of Steels.
The only major prob I have with the iPike are that they are made for touring, so you lose some handling and what not. Plus they are only T rated which means it can only go up to 190. Mind you, if youe going 190 in the winter time...your insane, but the handling is a big thing I've been debating.
I would prefer a narrow tire for winter driving. better traction in the slush we get around here. Dealer is telling me that I have to go with the 225 on the front and 245 on the back. I can't see what the difference would be. He told me something about screwing up the traction control. hmmm
I would like to go with 225/40/18 all the way around on my 3.8GT hell I would even go narrower than that if I could. cheaper too.
You'd want the sidewall to be 45, not 40. But yeah, that's what me and a couple of other members here are going with - 225/45/18 all around. Traction control should be fine as long as the back wheels are at least the same size as the front ones.
Be careful guys. the second number in a tire size is not a exact number, it's a percentage of the first. First Number=Width in mm, second number =height in percentage of the first number, third number=rim diameter. Our stock tire Diameter is different from front to back.
The typical correct sizing in 17" to match total stock diameter is Front 225/50/17 Back 225/55/17. Changing the width of the tire does not affect the Traction control.
So the idea here is to make sure that we keep the diameter the same as the stock tires. Other question is where is the speedometer sensor. front or back tires? the stock tires are 26.1" front and 27" for rear. do I need to keep to those or can I go 26.1 front and rear?
Well, go ahead and put same size tires all around then. Make sure to come and share your experience with us. Let us know if your TCS or ABS tends to act strangely. G35s owners have reported brake getting used up much faster then they should from the ABS system overeacting.
I don't like to guess when it comes to 2 grand worth of tires. That's why I am here asking questions
