Just got permission from VIS to release their new "Demon" style carbon fiber trunk lid this weekend and start taking pre-orders for the initial Group Buy which we will post shortly. This trunk has a built-in BMW-style spoiler. Tentative ETA is end of January.

NOTE: These pictures show a fiberglass version of the trunk. Obviously it will be manufactured in CARBON FIBER.

VIS was not making a trunk lid for anyone. They received a request and made it on their own accord. The products go to their top distributors first. What I can tell you is that the ENTIRE INVENTORY was purchased by two companies--Import Shark and another company who is not a vendor here on GenCoupe.com. (I believe this other company is going to be a vendor here soon though). No other companies have the ability to sell this product unless they purchase from either of the two distributors.

I knew this would happen. Also, last I heard, IS was not a direct distributor through VIS? At least that was what VIS told me. Anyway, good luck with selling these. :) We have moved on and there will not be any further sneak peaks of potential products.

Well, "going cheap" and trying to execute a look on a budget may be the same thing. At least in this case. Yes, a fiberglass trunk just might cost less, but it will cost more to prep & paint. In QM's case, he's actually better off spending slightly more on a carbon fiber trunk/hood because there is virtually no prep work at all--which translates into a lower bill from the bodyshop. So basically, his total expenditures can very easily be less by going with carbon fiber products instead of fiberglass. In fact, there's literally no advantage to opting for a fiberglass hood/trunk.

Very poorly executed version of my idea.

thank you.

WE as a forum decided on it through Tom's thread using Jake's idea:

Thank you for your feedback. Can you explain in detail exactly what is different in this rendering as opposed to the BMW lip spoiler? Obviously if this is not what "we the forum" were expecting, this is the time to get it corrected!

You seem to be under the misconception that there was actual "work" involved in picking up the phone to call VIS and asking them to make something. Or maybe you're referring to forwarding a picture via email? Is that the hard work you're thinking of?

Apparently there were no less than FOUR DIFFERENT PEOPLE who called up VIS and asked them to make this trunk. Yes, Tom obviously was one of them--but what about the others? Are you going to discount their "work" too?

The fact of the matter here is that you should choose your words more wisely in the future because you're way off base here--and obviously due to the "rip off" statement, poorly misinformed as well. If you would care to explain how you feel so the rest of the class can comment on it, then I'm sure we can get your confusion sorted out.

Rendering looks like ass.
See the above linked threads for the differences, they should be obvious.

I'd have to agree with Mike on the "personal not business comment"... I mean yeah it sucks for Tom that VIS used his request and started selling it to others, but in all honesty, months before Tom contacted VIS I had also already sent numerous emails to like 5 different companies (including VIS) asking if they'd make a CF trunk with lip spoiler, and I also started a thread asking any vendor to make it. We also have to remember that perhaps VIS was tired of waiting for a deposit. With people dropping out of the original group buy making us miss the minimum, perhaps VIS decided to get it released another way. Not all companies like to sit on ideas/new products for months on end.

It's not like Tom invented the idea, yes it sucks VIS was shady about it, but its not like Mike went in with intentions of screwing Tom over. Remember, it's VIS, not IS that screwed Tom, if he did have an exclusivity agreement with them. Without an exclusivity agreement then VIS did nothing wrong legally, morally though.....

On topic a bit though, I really dont see whats so different between the one posted and the one requested in Toms thread.

Satheian, Nxxt, & Kamkaze can you guys do a little paint shop and circle areas you think should be changed?

The only thing I think should be changed would be rounding off the points on the lip/bill.

I won't elaborate too much here, but before placing the blame on VIS, here are a few notes to chew on...

1) VIS does not do exclusivity agreements
2) MULTIPLE parties contacted VIS about making a product like this before the GB was posted--the majority of which were direct customers
3) VIS started working on new trunk designs nearly 6 months ago (and new hood designs even earlier btw)

I dont understand what is the problem. The trunk with lip spoiler is not a new idea and like CrookedH said, I dont see what VIS did wrong. If you are going to make a new product and have a new idea dont start calling everyone and telling about your idea, just make it, and make it asap. If you post it on the internet and expect that 3 months later no one else jumped into the idea of making it too, then you are ignorant.

I can understand that Tom is angry, same thing happened to us with many products we make on our shop. We never release any info about a product unless the product is about to be released. Even after that people will still copy it. And most people will buy the cheapest version, thats the way it is!

Mike just announce a new product that everyone was asking for the last few months and now everyone is mad! I dont understand!

I agree in part that VIS is more at fault than IS; but to think that IS was not aware of Tom's 15page thread about it,is too much of a stretch for me.

Mike, if you were/are genuinely interested in helping with this project, I suggest you contact Tom, find out the deal (if any, we were led to believe there was) between him and VIS, and then work together on it, but as far as I'm concerned, this is a G&M project.

If VIS acted shady, fine, VIS is shady, but VIS isn't here to discuss the issue, though part of me wants to call them..

Edit: in light of some of that new information about VIS, I can see Mike's perspective.

Yes, of course I knew about the thread where he was trying to arrange a GB. However, the original idea of a product like this pre-dates that.

I actually reached out to Tom to clarify the situation about the K2 trunk, but he did not want to discuss things then. Unfortunately I don't believe he would want to now.

There is even more information that I really wish I could make public because it would clarify a lot of the confusion that's going on. However, out of respect for certain parties, I will refrain from doing so.

I've told a number of people already--all I'm doing is gathering feedback from the community. That's what VIS asked me to do and that's what I am attempting to follow up on. There has already been some valued feedback passed along, and it is much appreciated. The more, the merrier.

Just to set the record straight, I am not angry. Business is dirty and I got screwed. It happens. I will talk with VIS to iron things out Monday. More info to come.
