Default Intercooler Discussion thread

Alright guys, I'm tired of everyone cluttering up Cdnsigop' thread with all this bantering on about intercoolers. So why don't we bring the discussion here and leave the other thread to what its purpose is, turbos.

My opinion is that almost every name brand company that put out a kit for our car is going to be a big improvement over stock. I do not really believe than any company is lightyears better than the other than in fitment therefore I would focus mostly on price when looking for a kit.

What do you guys think?

Could not beat the APG one at the discounted price when I bought one. And they worked with me with the cold side BOV as the pipe the sent originally it interfered with the fuse box.

It is so thick though some of it is blocked off by the bumper cover.

I would like to replace the TIP sensor with a dual use MAP like on the intake so I could gets some pre TB intake temps.

I just replaced my intercooler with cast iron piping and glued a bunch of heatsinks to it...BETTER THAN MISHIMOTO

Got a pic of this? Just really curious on what u did.

Since this is a Intercooler question.
The "cheaper" FMIC as far as i see:

- Mishimoto
- Depo Racing
- CX Racing

Questions:
Which on that will clear the Stock Intake Snorkel? (I think CX Racing one isnt?)
What about the fitment and efficient?
Since all these have "about" the same size as BR FMIC....what made the BR FMIC is so much better?

BR's FMIC uses a Garrett core IIRC. Their kit also has a properly mounted MAP sensor and comes with brackets to support the radiator so you can remove the stock IC.

Cx racing sends you random mounts and you need to figure out your own way to mount the FMIC. The core is there own. Also there piping has a bracket that isnt needed/ doesnt fit. Comes with a knock off BOV that you should probably just throw away. Andd the map sensor is mounted flat which can mess with your AFRs.

No experience with the depo or mishimoto kit..

Thanks on the help.

So is there any other good "affordable" FIMC?

I was thinking just replacing the Intercooler and keep all the stock pipes since i really dont wanna deal with the fitment of the Stock Intake Snorkel.

I just got the cp-e one like 2 weeks ago, I like it but I don't have much to compare it to. The installation was fairly easy to do on my own even though the directions sucked. The only downside is that you have to change your stock crash bar.

Garrett makes a kit that allows you to keep the stock pipes and crash bar.

I was considering the mishimoto intercooler simply based on price. I watched the install video of it and it mounts to the stock positions. Was going to do this at the same time as doing the rad (again with a mishimoto rad).

+1 for me. You need to use hot glue, elmers doesn't have the same heat dissipation properties.

I love my TurboXS FMIC. Huge core, and everything is high quality. I've had it for nearly a year and everything still looks great. I definitely noticed the car performed more consistently after repeated autocross runs with this IC.

IMHO, I would steer clear of CX cores.

Correct sir, make sure you use that high temp stuff though, otherwise you get runs when it heats up

Here is my humble noob contribution to this tread:
1. You MUST install a hot side (pre-intercooler side) oil catch can. Unbeleivable the amount of oil that goes throught the pipes and core. My own experience.
2. The AEM core has the intake/output flanges directed back, not towards the sides...a LOT simpler and much more efficient ( ie... Shorter pipes mean less torbolag)

flanges on back = bad. The air has to make a hard 90 degree turn on entry and exit causing turbulence and disrupting flow.

I had a chance to see a AMS FMIC, that thing, over priced yes, but look of amazing quality and work man skills. Definitely A- material lol.

Beyond Redline's kit is great.

Great fitment, comes with every single clamp/bolt/piece of hardware you need (some kits dont come with t-bolt clamps which are pretty expensive and you need 12 of them usually), comes with a mount to hold the radiator so you can remove the OEM core, has a properly angled MAP sensor, and has a neat little bracket to relocate the power sterring line.

Oh and it cools like crazy, I've not had any bit of heat soak since. Even did 5 1/4 passes in about 40 mins on an 85 degree day with no power loss. Overall the car runs much more consistently since the removal of the OEM FMIC.
