My car seems to have a whine some where in the middle..It stops when I turn the car off and its not always happening. It doesnt sound like the fans...its more toward the back of the engine...maybe the drive shaft? 1300miles.

I have a similar whine. I ca nhear it mostly when in the cabin. It only happens when i get below half a tank and the car is hot. I was orginally going to bring it in to check and then filled the car up before going into the dealer and could not get the sound again. So I am also assuming a fuel pump due to the lower water pressure of a emptier tank. It can get annoying unless the radio is way up. I was hoping my issue was isolated... I have a feeling we will now hear "that is normal" from the dealer

Yeah, My Subaru used to do this on start up for about 5/6 sec because I had dual pumps. But this does it when the car is running, when i rev it does not change. the sounds is the same at what ever rpm...seems to only do this when the car is fully warmed up/hot..

The only weird "whine" I have heard out of mine is what I believe to be the differential when I am turning at low speeds and not giving it alot of gas. I attribute it to the differential because the R-Spec has a LSD, and it isn't that lout at all...I'm just kind of a nut about noticing little noises in my car. I may not have noticed a whine of the fuel pump though because I have a large Cap and amp for my subs. My 3000GT would make a high pitched whine while it was running, but it was just the HP fuel pump I had on there.

I heard this on my car today...not thrilled.

I have 37xx on the clock and my car started doing this today. Is there anything that can be done about this? I don't feel like the dealership will be much help. The whine drives me crazy.

When its doing it, if I shut the car off and turn it back on it'll stop. It doesn't get louder as RPMs increase as far as I can hear, it's a very consistent same pitch sound and it's only noticeable below 2-3k RPM, you can also hear it die down as you shut the car off and the engine turns to a stop. Anyone?

I'm not exactly a mechanic, but it doesn't sound like a power steering pump, unless the power steering pump whine really varies that much from car to car..still, doesn't sound like one to me.

Edit: If this really ends up being the steering pump failing on a car with 3700 miles on it I will be pissed, I like the car so far but damn, really? Well, whatever it ends up being...damn.

If it was that it would make a noise while you turned the wheels. This is just a noise that is constant and it makes no difference what you do driving wise.

So i was right, with 1700 miles on the car i am getting warrenty work on the fuel pump and exhaust....a lot of rattling.

Sounds exactly like what I get now and then.
Does not matter what speed/rpm or if I'm turning.
Sounds like its from under my drivers seat.
The only thing that seems to stop it from comming
Back is before I actually start up, turn the key into "accessory"
Possitipn Let it do all it's checks, then turn it over.
Has not done it since I started doing that...

Maybe it needs to prime the pump???
Just guessing.

Let us know if they can fix this. I only get mine at a half tank or lower in gas so far and when the car is very hot. I would like to see if this is a faulty part issue or inherent in their fuel pumps in general.

Yeah, Mine started in heavy heat. Right now its been over 80f for the past few weeks...its been doing it every day.
The part that Pisses me off the most is that they don't give loaners?! WTF. (Unless you have an extended warranty they said)

Oh well, Atleast they managed to admit that the exhaust rattling all the time is their fault and same with the fuel pump.

The only reason they did this...because this isnt the first time Ive gone for this issue...they said the "exhaust sound was normal" and they couldn't replicate the pump noise. This time I made them go outside with me and both the head tech and service manager agreed that it wasnt normal. SMH

LOL, so i get a call this morning and They tell the exhaust is tight...all the heat shielding is tight. All the sounds are normal after the head tech checked it with me and said this doesnt sound normal...They are trying to con me into believing that sports cars do this...YEAH OK?!

Even though the head tech saw and heard my car...they are saying that they cannot reproduce the sounds and that it is due to the---intake cone filter.. I kept telling them that this only happens when the car is hot and they obviously did it in the morning when it was 70f. I told them to let the car run and get it hot and it will start again...so I am currently waiting on that result.

So they called me back again and said it is the fuel pump after running it for a bit...the sound started again..

Yeah I was in the car with my girl when I first started hearing this.
have 3k on the car and never heard it till the weather got hot out.

Should I take it to the dealership since ur saying its the fuel pump?

Although im beginning to believe it might be normal since a lot of people on here are saying they are hearing it when the weather gets hot.

I too am hearing a weird whining noise. Going to bring it to the dealership to get it fixed though. Definitely not normal. I'm assuming it has to do with the power steering.
