Default Prototype Beyond Redline Turbo Kit…Details Revealed!

By now I’m sure most of you have seen the results of our prototype turbo kit for the new Genesis Coupe. If you haven’t please check out the dyno results and video clips of our testing here: CLICK HERE

One of the biggest questions on everybody’s minds may be, “How did they get this thing together so quickly?” We knew in order to show up and play ball in this game we had to come big and fast, or go home. We studied the service manuals and even ordered a long block long before we even secured our Coupe. We knew that not only did we want to be first to the plate with our offerings; we wanted to make sure our plans were going to work, be solid, and perform extremely well for your dollar.

However up to this point we have been quite tip lipped regarding the details of the kit including the hardware, options, etc. Well today the sheet comes off!

Concept and Design
Long before we received our Coupe we were discussing different ways to offer owners options for getting some more performance out of their new ride. Of course we discussed the few products we have showcased so far including exhaust systems, intercooler upgrades etc. When it came to the turbo we had some very different and unique plans in mind. We knew that most hardcore enthusiasts would have no problem bolting on a tubular header when they decided to go for big power numbers, but also thought we had to have an alternative for the everyday customer who was looking for an easier, less complicated solution. We discussed custom “bolt on” replacement solutions but in the end decided that the compromises that are typically made in these cases aren’t worth the end result. Besides what would happened when you did decide to make the next step to that BIG turbo….your stuck trying to resell your stop-gap solution and you have to start all over again.

Enter the Beyond Redline turbo upgrade kit
Turbocharger technology has come a long way in the past 15 years. One of the greatest innovations as of late is the V-band turbine housing. It simplifies installation and servicing of the complete turbo system and offers excellent flow characteristics. While the v-band has been used for years on diesel applications it hasn’t yet made it to main stream gasoline cars for the simple fact that v-bands are to cost prohibitive to weigh out ther benefits in a low pressure OEM system. Tial Products has been a leader in the turbocharger/accessory market and due to our flawless track record with all their products we are proud to offer them in all of our upgrade offerings. Once we saw their new turbine housings for the Garrett GT turbos we knew we had to use them in our products.

Our initial design was more of a “simple” adaptor flange that would allow the end user to bolt a new V-band turbine housing to the stock manifold. We did some measuring and utilizing our 3-d printer had a sample made up.

After we did some on car fitment testing with the sample we determined that some changes needed to be made. The turbo didn’t quite sit where we wanted for a number of reasons and we really wanted to make sure this system was a complete “bolt on” affair. After a few adjustments and further revisions we were left with the following:

Although the prototype is made from machined billet parts our plan is to cast this piece from stainless steel with solid mounting/bracing points/ to ensure long term reliability and durability.

Some of the advantages regarding this design:
  • Utilizes stock exhaust manifold which, when compared to a lot of other OEM offerings is very good for flow and does not exhibit any noticeable weak spots that might be prone to cracking
  • Fits all sizes of Garrett GT series turbochargers including 2860RS(disco potato), 3076 (GT30) and 3582 (GT35R)
  • Utilizes external waste gate for better boost control
  • No compromise in exhaust flow, especially in the wastegate area, we have seen zero evidence of boost creep, regardless of what we do with this setup.
  • Provides an upgrade path for future tubular manifold installation

Production
I know what the next questions are going to be…..
How much will it cost?” “When can I buy one?
Unfortunately at this time these questions will have to go unanswered. We are working very hard to bring this product to market and internally do not know when it will be ready or what the final price will be. However, count on the team here at Beyond Redline to offer you quality products at competitive pricing. We will let you know more details as they become available.

Thank you to everyone who has kept up on our build progress over the past few weeks, we are looking forward to further developing this platform and taking this car to the next level.

Will this be cheaper then a simple turbo manifold swap for a kit?

That certainly is our goal with this project. Although very little information is available at this time regarding cost, we will be updating you as soon as information becomes available.

We are waiting for some developments in this department. Right now its either piggy back or nothing.

This car is an absolute blast to drive at the 300whp level. I am really surprised at how the drivability hasn't been affected as much as I thought it may be with the piggy back. Although it can be a handful in 4th gear in the rain.

So, just to confirm, you are using a piggyback fuel manager?

I think 'piggy back or nothing' means yes.

You're working very quickly.

As much as I want 300hp like.. yesterday..

I'm going to wait a bit. It's still early, there aren't that many gc's on the road yet, and I think the ecu flash will come in time.

I'm actually suprised the disco potato doesn't fit in the stock location. I would love to go that route since that will probably be the way to go before ecu flashes and clutch upgrades.

For those that don't know about the GT2860RS aka the disco potato this turbo spools not too far away from the stock turbo yet keeps going all the way to 350whp and a nice fat torque curve aswell.

I agree, the Disco Potato would be a nice match for most consumers. Not looking for much power, but wants a great responsive turbo that provides crisp torque anywhere you want it, and gives a nice bit of "bounce" in the cars "step".

Although for power junkies, any variant of the GT35R is the best choice. Great spool characteristics, while providing great high-hp potential.

Tim,

Is the stock ECU sophisticated enough to compensate for a different turbo without a retune? Its seems to compensate for manual boost controllers up to a point. How is it adjusting the AFRs as it doesn't have a wideband? Is it using the knock sensor to keep everything in line?

Of course a proper tune is going to get you the most power and efficiency, but it seems like some folks are content to just upgrade the turbo and exhaust and leave the stock ECU alone which kinda concerns me.

It is very possible that Hyundai did this because this car seems to be aimed at tuners.

The GT35 would be drag strip or highway only car IMHO.
3076 should be more then enough with 3200 full spool and 500whp potential.

Will you be offering a kit with out the turbo and or possibility to upgrade for cheaper then buying another kit.

Because I might just jump ahead the potato and get a FP HTA 3076 hmmm I just arrived three times

I have tried to come up with some sort of criticism against the 3076 versus the 35R but I cant come up with anything without getting frustrated. So forgive my ignorance.

I love the 35R too much, but not as much as a T51R, which IS a "highway" "drag strip" turbo.
