Default 3.8 Owners - How Many Miles Can You Drive After Empty Light Comes On?

I want to see how far 3.8 owners out there have gotten after the E light came on the fuel gauge. It would be nice to know if the E light comes on and I am far from a gas station.

EDIT: Also, I'm too lazy to go in the driveway and pull out the manual.

1.) What is our fuel capacity at full?

2.) How many gallons do we have left when the E light comes on??

Our tanks hold 17.2 gallons. Usually my light in my 3.8 comes on when I have about 3 gallons left. By the time I get to a gas station, I usually get 15 - 15.5 gallons into the tank. That is ONLY when the fuel light comes on though. Otherwise I have my set schedule of getting gas thanks to commuting to work.

If I set the odometer thingie to read "RANGE" for how many miles I have left, once it says I have 30 miles left is when it starts blinking angrily at me. The orange fuel light will come on at 40 miles left though.

Also, I see you're from Rumson! I work in Tinton Falls. The side near Shrewsbury and Red Bank.

It is not a good practice to let the tank get that low, A lot of sediment and junk sink to the bottom of the tank, and when you run it low if has a tendency to pick up the junk in the tank. Also it is harder on the pump, due to less cooling efficiency.

I think mine comes on with around 2-2.5 gallons left in the tank, which is anywhere between 35-60 miles depending on how I am driving. I dont want to risk running out of gas so I normally refuel as soon as it comes on or before that.

That sediment and junk at the bottom of the tank is an urban legend. The tanks pump from the bottom anyway.. so anything down there would be getting sucked up regardless. The real issue is that most fuel pumps are actually inside the tank, and use the fuel to keep it cool. Once you run your tank down, its not covered by fuel anymore and can cause premature failure.

I had the displeasure of buying it from Brad Benson, only because they had the car I wanted for a good deal, and I bought my Tib I was trading in from them. Circle Hyundai and Lester Glenn Hyundai, at that time, didn't have much to choose from other than red and blue. And Freehold Hyundai... oh... their finance manager blocked me in the lobby and wouldn't let me leave. Very scary place, haha. Did you go to Circle? The staff there are very nice, and they are my dealership from now on, since they are right up the street from where I work.

Circle was the first place I called because they are soo close to me, but they didn't have the Karussel White 3.8 Track - 6MT - Nav in stock. In fact, the only one in the Tri-State area was at Hackettstown Hyundai. It just so happened to work out that my associate, that I work with at Mercedes-Benz, his cousin is the owner of Hackettstown Hyundai. He told me to call his cousin and see what he could do. Little did I know I was calling the right store that had the car. Also, Circle quoted me $65 more than Hackettstown. I understand they had to go to Hackettstown to get the car for me, but that's ridiculous. Regardless, Circle will be my Servicing Dealer as I already made friends with EJ Wright, the Service Manager.

I would believe the junk and sediment at the bottom of your tank if you let it sit for awhile... but if that were the case it would not matter how low your gas was because like someone else said fuel pumps pull from the bottom of the tank anyway.

It doesn't make sense that it will tell you the range until 30 miles. After 30 it just blinks and you're on your own to guess... Isn't the whole point to tell you the range before you run out?

Also, on my Mercedes the range function will fluctuate depending on the driving that I do. So if I'm obviously crawling in traffic, the range will drop. If cruising on the highway, the range will climb. To date, I haven't seen my range go up. It just drops.

The range indicator on the gencoupe isn't the greatest. It's not like the more expensive ones they put on BMW's/Mercedes that constantly update and give you fairly accurate results.

It blinks after 30 because it's innaccurate to begin with and they don't want you relying on it and having it say 20 and run out of gas.

The range doesn't go up on the Coupe.. it just doesn't go down. I've noticed if my range sits at 240 miles and my MPG goes up, I go more miles while it sits at 240. I really don't use it because its so inaccurate.
