Default Track Video - Laguna Seca 30DEC11

Here is an unedited video from our second morning session. The first session was dicey as the track was pretty wet. We finally had a dry line in this session. This was my first track session with the SFR reflash and my last track day in May at Thunderhill.

We did a combined day today with NCRC and the Alfa Romeo club. I was running in the advanced group. Overall it was a very balanced group with a couple of pretty fast cars as usual. Check out 16:16 and the white 2011 M3 that passes me before turn 9. Really good ex racer and with a full comp setup on the BMW... he said the car was putting out about 425 rwhp.

Check out the guy in the Vette that goes off in 11 (18:32)

My ride is a 2010 Track. Mods are the sfr reflash, AEM CAI, Brembo slotted rotors, Hawk track pads, and motul 600. I love the car for $ to performance ratio.

Heading back down to Laguna tomorrow morning for some more sessions.

Awesome video, thanks for sharing. My favorite threads are those with road racing vids.
Looks like you may be out driving your tires. I'm assuming you are still running the OEM Bridgestones & with the brake upgrades stickier tires would make a great compliment.
Good driving BTW!

nice vid! Makes me wish it wasnt january...

your shifting and right foot are so relaxed in this vid, you could have gotten some more speed out of the gen

btw what is your front camber setting?

You are correct... Still running the OEM tires for now. Shortly I will purchase a new set of wheels and r-comp tires. One good thing about good street tires on the track is you get a lot of feedback and they are forgiving. R-Comps grip like hell but when they let loose they let loose. Taking my time on upgrades for now.

crank the front camber down to -2, you will see a considerable decrease in understeer.

Made a huge difference for me.

I really enjoyed that. And it made me nervous!

A couple of things I noticed but I'm a total noob (I've roadraced sportbikes, raced Arenacross MX, and a little bit of carting too but have absolutely no car track experience) so take it for what it is worth.

1) You are smooth and consistent!
2) You go in pretty darn deep. I'm surprised you had brakes after that session. You consistently were having to brake early (for you) to keep from running up the Vette and Miata's asses cause you were clearly prepared to go in deeper.
3) You seem to be losing a lot of time (to the M3 in particular) in the double apex turns like #1 and the left hander after the corkscrew. I think you initiate your turns a fair bit too early and too far to the inside putting you too far outside for your drive. Your entry speed might drop and even your speed thru the first part of those long turns. But taken as an elapsed time from initiation till after the following straightaway, it is surely faster to run wider. Of course I may just be trying to apply motorcycle lines?
4) When you were chirping entering some of those turns what caused that and was it in intentional? Was it from a poorly matched downshift or were you trying to kick the rear end out just a hair (that Z did exactly that 2-3x) to help initiate the turn? I'm just trying to learn.
5) That Corkscrew exit looks sketchy! It's like you want to get on the throttle a lot harder and sooner but the rear end looks like it is just dying to step out on ya.

Thx again for posting. The video was fantastic!

That is actually turn 2 at Laguna. Turn 1 is the slight left bend when you crest the hill on the straight. Turn 2 is tricky and I still struggle with this corner, even on the bike. When I did the Skip Barber race school in the open wheel cars the preferred line is a tighter entrance and then using your braking control to back-in the rear end and double apex the turn. Of course this is much easier to do in a rear engine vehicle. The more preferred line as most do is to take the entrance on turn 2 wider. There was one ex pro out there in his race prep'd 2011 M3 that was incredible in this corner. He took a tighter line and slid the rear-end for a nice straight exit and early on the gas for the double apex....

Turns 8 and 9 still give me problems to this day. I know I lose a lot of time in this section. I just haven't felt comfortable enough in the vehicle to take those fall away left hand turns in that section. I have been behind a few cars that have lost the rear and do a nice 180 off into the gravel. Practice, practice, practice...

Thanks for the comments...

Thanks for sharing. That was exciting to watch. I think adjusting the camber and getting stickier tires will help out a lot........

Hallett outside of Tulsa isn't THAT far from AR, and is a really fun track (drove there back in 2004). Can highly recommend checking it out

Yeah I think I saw them working on the cars in the pits...Black Evo?
I don't think there has been one day at the track that I have not seen an Evo breakdown. Hopefully they are able to get them operational again soon.

Yep, a black Evo9 and a dark grey Evo10. The 9 lost the transmission. He should be back operational within a week or so (already getting a good one swapped in). Given that he knew the transmission was a bit iffy BEFORE the track day, let's just say he wasn't shocked it let go.

I wish I couldve joined you at Laguna. I'm definitely going to be signing up if they do it again at the end of this year. They have the cheapest cost for that track.

I dont know if I can join you for Button Willow this spring. (its just so far away...) Will let you know.

Great driving!

Hey Max Power what organization runs the track day at Laguna? I would love to run Laguna and do a little SoCal - NorCal meet at the track. Here's a pic of my Gen at the top of the Esses at Big Willow but I would one of the Corkscrew.
