Default Spark Plug gapping

Ok guys since we were talking about the spark plug gaps in Genesis 2012 thread, (and because I know most of you will not do a search) Let me give you a little basic info on plugs and gapping.

By the way, I checked my own gap, and they were all at .30, I went ahead and opened them up to .35, so I'll see if my car runs happier/better mpg with this gap.

The way that an engine runs, is that it needs air (intake) fuel (injectors) and spark (sparkplugs) to cause a combustion, which then pushes the piston down rotating the crank, blah blah blah.

To keep things simple, I'm just going to explain the gap.

In between the gap, is where the spark happens. The bigger the gap, the bigger the spark. The bigger the spark, the faster the air/fuel molecules can ignite.

Each car has a specific gap it's supposed to run, so that the car can run happy and EFFICIENT (this is what we are focusing on if we're stock.)

For whatever reason, Hyundai has a spec of .35-.40, but if you check your gap, it's probably at .25-.30.

So we need to make our gaps a little bigger, which is something Quartermaster, myself, and probably El Stig can help you guys (and teach you how) to do. (Up North seems like Jewish Thunder can help you guys out)

The only reason to make your gap less, is if you're running MORE boost. The reason is because with more boost, there's more forced air, and if your gap is too big, the forced air will blow out the spark before it can ground out and ignite the air/fuel molecules. DECREASING the gap allows the spark to ground out and ignite. So the more you boost, the more you decrease your gap.

Running the correct gap size will give us more efficiency, giving us in theory better gas mileage AND power.

I hope this helps, and if you need your plugs checked/gapped, I like Blue Moons and Jim likes Corona's. I don't mind Corona's either.

Anyone want to add on, feel free. I just thought I'd write this up real quick.

sounds good. My boost gauge and oil pressure one should arrive tomorrow. I ordered my AFR gauge form BR as I had some store credit from them so it might take a little longer. But you'll hear from me in a week or 2.

I think he just meant so we can knock it all out in one shot.

Thanks for the thread ray I think this explains it very well. It's something that a lot of people don't know they can do almost for free!

Right

Now what would happen if you run a gap that is too large? misfiring of the plug, can't be too good?

with BR stage 1 I'm probably at 20psi boost (hence the need of my boost gauge ) so I shouldn't need to increase the gap too much.

If the gap is too big you'll get blowout under boost and you'll see a bit of black smoke out the exhaust. Not good but not that terrible. We would just shrink the gap. BR's tune runs very well gapped at .35 you'd be surprised how huge of a difference .28 to .35 is.

Hey Ray. I'm just a lurker on the forums but I run across a lot of helpful threads made by you. I really appreciate it. Please keep us updated on how your car responds to the change.

I get a lot of soot buildup on my exhaust tips and also get pretty low MPG on a stock car. I don't have the heaviest foot either. I'll definitely change mine if you see positive results.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but too large a gap and it simply won't jump the gap. Spark is a function of gap and voltage. If your coil pack's voltage is not high enough to jump the larger gap it won't.

Anyone looked at what the best heat range plugs to run in this car are?

Absolutely which is why you don't overgap them. Especially when running higher boost. When running 20psi .35 is about as large of a gap as I would want. .32 any higher boost.

The stock heat range is perfect until you go bigger turbo in which case going one step colder could help.

Makes sense. How much boost are you planning to run? 26ish?
