Finesse Is Everything
|
I followed the directions per the following link:
BMWTips wheel-scuff repair I am happy with the results and would endorse this method. I have never done anything like this and managed to get through it. I did all of this with Aerosol cans. Those of you who have air brush equipment can make it look even better. Here is a photo synopsis of the job. <<<>>> ![]() Prep work and preview of curb rash ![]() First of many coats of Spot Bondo. Used 320 grit for first 2 layers. Then 600 to finish. Basically apply small amounts at a time to fill in slowly. End with fine grit (1000) to even out smoothness. ![]() Taper primer from damage out. ![]() Frist coat of 3. These coats are all tapered from damage source towards center of spokes. ![]() After base coat but before the clear coat. Dry to touch paint still settling in. You can see the curb rash is gone. ![]() After 3 light coats of clear applied. Color set in nicely. I will be taking some outdoor photos soon with this reclaimed wheel. The total investment was about 30 US dollars . 1 Can of Primer 1 Can of Base Coat 1 Can of Clear 1 Pack of Sand Paper from 180 - 1500 Grit 1 Tube of Spot Bodo 1 Can of Paint Thinner for cleanup

i'd like to see the outdoor pics, when you get them up. could just be the lighting, but the bottom of the wheel in that last pic looks way more matte than the rest of the wheel. is that the spot where you repaired?

keep in mind that this method only works on certain colors and wheel material. The stock wheels on the GC are some of the easier wheels to fix.
They cost about $50 to have a company fix them. They grind the curb rash away, then they fill it and sand it, and paint. Not sure if they only paint a portion of the wheel or the entire thing.

Will do, I took those picture about and hour after the job as done. The clear coat really changed a lot overnight. You can tell when you go up close it was done. From a foot or so away looking down not so much. I will get those up soon. Be great if someone tried this who has better technique and make a follow up to this. I think the aerosol can is not exactly the best for doing any fine detail work.

The problem with fixing curb rash on the track wheels is that there's no exact match for the paint. It's darker and shinier than any of the typical silver paints.
I know, because I'm repainting an entire set. The OEM 18's are a different color than the 19's. The 18's match more of what's out there in terms of paint color. To get it perfect you really have to repaint all the wheels.

costs about 150-200 to repaint a wheel around here, same as powder coating... i called many places to get quotes.. i have the same paint as mcjazzy i believe, and its supposed to be an exact match to the oem hyper silver. i tried the patch method that mcjazzy did and failed.
btw my curbrash was slightly worse, it hit the aluminum, not just paint. so i took the tire off the wheel and am painting the whole thing. hopefully the finished product will match close enough to the other wheels. if not - not sure what i will do. right now i am at a clean primer stage, ready for paint, hopefully before it gets dark today. plan to put some duplicolor clear wheel sealer on it as a clear coat. will post pictures here, i dont think mcjazzy will mind |

My damage was very minor and only dug into the aluminum slightly.
taspankya you don't need my blessings to post your DIY onto this. More the merrier! Here are two quick shots in the parking spot today of the finished wheel... Do note that I tapered the paint into the center of the wheel to try and get the hyper silver paint to blend the best I could... ![]() ![]()

Yeah, the hyper silver is not an exact match. At least from what I can tell. Wonder if you should do all of them? I can tell you that after a day of letting everything set in it got better.

Are you sure the paint isn't an exact match to the OEM 18's? They have a brighter thicker finish to them. Like I said, paint the whole set of wheels and you'll be fine. Paint isn't that expensive. It's all in the prep/cleaning. Pick any color you want if you'd like.

^^
2008 Hyundai All Models, 12 oz Aerosol Spray Paint :Hyper Silver Met KM from automotive touchup / microfinish I am trying to match the OEM 19 paint. Everyone is telling me to just paint the others, but I don't have the time or patience to go through this same process w/ 3 more wheels. i;ll call around tomorrow to see if someone can match the paint and do it for a reasonable price. if not then its going on there like it is. idc anymore ![]() 100 is reasonable to me, 200 is not.

2008 Hyundai All Models, 12 oz Aerosol Spray Paint :Hyper Silver Met KM from automotive touchup / microfinish QUOTE] Yeah unfortunately the wheels are different colors. It's the same case with some G35 wheels. Nobody could find an exact match for the paint and getting custom matched paint was too expensive.

If anyone is interested....
I have had several people look at the job. These people who looked are car enthusiasts and do not have vision problems. Until I pointed it out which wheel it was never mind where the work was done and they they didn't notice. I got thee wheels at an unbelievable price and wanted them for the better performance over 18" OEM. I can assure to anyone using this paint with the method I used will work if you aren't persnickety, have a steady hand, and are accepting of the result as I posted above. This who deal with the wheels only cost me 550 bucks and change. ;-)

the guy seemed confident he could match it and said $125 - it should be done in a week. wish me luck on the match i;ll let you know the results. but i fear the worst |
