Transmission Fluid?

I've been reading a lot of posts saying to change the manual tranny fluid ASAP. I'd love to do that, but this is my first manual so I'm not too sure exactly what I should be buying. Can anyone recommend a good fluid for me?

Search or read the back of your manual. It tells you what specification oil you need. Then get some from a reputal source like Redline, AMSoil, Royal Purple, etc. that is a full synthetic then either replace the fluid like an oil change yourself with block and jacks or take it by a local shop. Shop will probably charge you about the same cost as the tranny fluid though so that's your call.

Should be. I ran OEM (before TSB) fluid the first 5K miles. Then ran the Redline MT-90 fluid for 15K miles with no problems. Now, I am on AMSoil because they are sponsoring me and getting me oil and lubricants mucho cheap and have been running that for 2.5K.

The biggest thing is the weight and viscosity standard. Match that and you are golden.

Nope. As long as you get the proper specifciation lubricant, and it is put in the tranny properly, then you are fine. I have taken my car to my local dealer for issues and concerns since I have switched fluids and even told them I did and their response is as long as I don't flush the fluids and systems excessively and use the proper spec oil and lubricants, it falls under general maintenance and is fine.

What's the purpose of the fluid change? I did a quick search for "manual fluid" but nothing really.

Also, what other MT things should I be aware of?

Basically, a majority of members have found that the stock setup and fluids don't tend well to smooth even shifts, some crunchy ness, and even occassional gringding when shifting at high RPMs. Hyundai has since TSBed to switch to a different tranny oil to help, but you won't get it until and unless you do the 50K to 60K service where the tranny fluid is normally swapped.

So, the members on gencoupe started looking into cheap ways to fix the problem now. We found that by switching to a fully synthetic high grade tranny oil and bleeding the clutch to make sure there were no air bubbles in the line, it helped to smooth out shifts and notchiness that were being felt. Some even said it helped with the grinding at high RPMs although I personally have never really had this problem so I can't speak from experience as well as some members still stated they had the grinding after doing this fix idea.

Additionally, if you want a more precise shift through the gate without a vague "am I in the right gear" feeling, many a few including myself have purchased from TWM Performance their short throw shifter with weighted shift knob. This utilizes a shorter shifter lever with adjusted position to the linkage fulcrum that allows for less effort and more precise feel rowing through the gears. The weighted shift knob helps to offset the slightly harder push needed with the short throw shifter, which is normal because the offset of reducing the shifter length is more force, albeit not a lot, needed to push the shifter through the gate into gear.

I was personally happy with my manual trans and didn't have any problems once she got through the break in period and had time to wear the syncros and gears in. I just chose to do the above changes for even smoother and better shifting, and I have to say I love the difference.

Hope this helps to answer your questions. If not, keep em coming.

(I really wish we had rep points possible on this site lol)

You've been very helpful, Bill, and I really appreciate it. The MT-90 is on its way and I plan to take my car to the shop and get the fluid swapped out once it gets here. Have people had any luck getting the dealership to bleed the clutch under warranty?

No worries, that's what forum buddies are for . Anywho, a handful of people have been able to. Just depends on how cool your dealer is with things. If not, you may be able to ask the place you are going to to switch the tranny fluid to do it. I know my local shop only charges an extra $10 to $20 dollars to do it. Never hurts to ask.
