How to improve sound without new exhaust?

So yeah, $800+ for an exhaust system is a little out of my budget right now. That said, I want to make the gencoupe 3.8 sound better (not necessarily louder). Right now, at high rpms the car just sounds weak and whiny. Anyway to make it sound a little better without buying an exhaust? Anything I can simply remove?

I already have a K&N drop-in filter, I was thinking about a DIY SRI but doesn't the intake only affect sound during a load?

Drop muffler, put washers on muffler bolts and reattach

swap the resonator in the middle of the exhaust for a straight pipe or drop the mufflers and run straight pipes with tips.
Both very easy and cheap

Current- 03 Saab 9-3.
TDO4-18T and a list too large for sig's.
311whp/347wtq.

In the market- 11' White R Spec.

AKGC: Lmao that sounds so ghetto... is that a real mod even?

Turbo: I like your ideas, how much would each one cost, and what type of sound would I hear with each one? I like the idea of changing the tips out.

I just found this:

Is it weird I nearly popped a boner (especially seeing in the description that he got that result for $40)?

Also, whats louder, resonator delete or muffler delete?

I did the washer mod and it took me, literally 5 minutes to do and cost me, pretty much free. It made my 3.8 sound mean! It's "ghetto" but it works....but I do have to tell you...all you're doing is purposefully "inducing an exhaust leak"...so don't expect ANY performance gains. Also, I DONT plan on making a sound clip only because you can do the mod yourself in under 10 min...

Ok, that's fine. I don't expect performance (I mean we're talking 10whp with those fancy $1k exhaust). Any pictures on where to do this? This is literally the first time I'm working on the mechanics of a car.

And how does this compare to a res or muffler delete?

get under rear of the car.

unbolt the 2 bolts connecting the mid pipe to the muffler.

either, pull the muffler off the hangers and put on washers, or wiggle the muffler enough to put on the washers.

(put back on hangers) bolt pipes together .

EDIT: suggest taking the gasket that sandwiches between the pipes, off and save. Just in case.

Wait really? You're actually going to do an exhaust leak on the car?

That's the dumbest thing I ever heard... Even civic guys don't do these anymore.

Is there something I should know about? If it works, I don't see the problem (I mean what's the difference between replacing the muffler with a pipe or disconnecting it a little)?

just get a custom exhaust made... a friend of mine just had a full header-back true dual exhaust made for $200. they bent each pipe and curved them exactly right so it fit perfect with the least amount of restrictive bends.. again $200 for a full custom exhaust... call every shop in your area and i'm sure you can find a deal like this

When I had my exhaust done, the shop said that the other Genesis they've done, they've just unbolted the muffler, and replaced it with pipe and tips. They unbolted my muffler, I drove it, and told them to put some hi flow mufflers on there. Its too poppy without a muffler.

I'd got the custom route. All the cat-backs are crazy expensive!

I need to put some reso's on there because mine is a little raspy...lol!
