Default Feeler: Wiring harness kit

Gauging interest in relocating the wiring inside the engine compartment of either the 2.0 or 3.8

My idea is to move the ecu and fuse boxes out of the engine compartment, and to reroute the wiring to the perimeter and front.

Reason being is because the existing arrangement crowds the compartment for future mods which may compromise the wiring. Such as turbos or manifold which may get to hot or simply because it gets in the way of piping which would limit the vertical clearance from the hood, etc.

The kit would include extension cords, longer leads from the head units. Basically you'll get more slack without having to cut in butt-splices and it would have factory connectors on the ends so you could just snap into the various sensors, leaving the user to decide routing alone and wire management. No splicing required.

I'm thinking all wiring to be 18awg stranded so length isn't an issue.

What do you guys think?

It would be for either/or. Otherwise I would have posted it in the 3.8 section only.

I doubt the connectors would be different between engine sizes. Besides, the idea is the have the connectors available to make, if necessary, the custom cable.

*description revised to include engine compatibility.

And the harness is different between the push button and key start setups. So there would be 4 total different wire harnesses.

I would imagine the connectors at the head units would be different but the connectors at the sensors?

I'm more interested in the wiring inside the engine compartment such as the connectors to the fuel injectors, the ocv, o2, plugs etc. I can't imagine a two wire connector being different, but I'll verify this on a 2.0. Just need a volunteer. This of course would be tested on vehicles before being offered. I'll compare on hmaservices, too.

I'm currently fact finding. Although I do have someone working on the 3.8 kit. The 2.0 may take a little longer simply because of accessibility.

Thanks for the feedback though. Good looking out.

I would think that for the different type start cars it is just some rewiring and the ECU of final destination. The connectors to the actual sensors would be the same. But in the case of fog lights or no fogs, hids or no hids, auto climate or manual climate, auto or manual and there are two different ABS units I believe plus much more I'm sure. These would all require either extra wiring and unused connectors or individual harnesses.

Regardless of the details which either kit would require, you guys believe it's a worthwhile venture?

I plan to do it to my car at least. Those wires are annoying.

any finished product? it's hard to sell without showing the result.
question: any of our wires are shielded or require shielding to block out foreign radio frequency/noise? Will your harness extension kit build to that quality?

sounds like a neat idea. In my old 240sx days, we pretty much study the source to the end of the wire, we moved the fuse boxes under the dash. It wasn't for faint of heart, but most of us actually shaved off tons of unnecessary length of wires.

No there are no finished products. This is simply a thread to gauge interest in a product like the one described.

Since ordering connectors is generally in the realm of box fulls, then it would certainly be an expensive undertaking for 1 person. Thus the idea has been shared so the cost can be mitigated across the group.

I would most certainly post pictures of the finished product once I had it complete, but without some kind of group interest I would not want to get stuck with 3000 extra connectors.

As far as the shielded cable is concerned that maybe possible if a user would wish it. Now whether it's needed or not, I personally have not performed any test within the engine compartment to determine if induction is an issue. But I would imagine that the cost of shielded 18 vs unshielded isn't very drastic. Is it necessary? I don't know.

They use shielded wire on the crank, cam and MAF if you have one wiring.

TY RR for the info. Good to know. I'll then prepare the price accordingly.

if you 2.0 guys want to help the cause you can take clear pictures of the connectors in your engine compartment.

here is a link of what I submitted to the engineering group that is preparing the package for the 3.8

https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1...15091427586753

All this basically entails is sitting down, grabbing a large cup of coffee and thumbing through the very daunting Delphi catalog and matching up the connectors. I for one didn't want to do it, so I got the engineering firm to do it. The same would be done with the 2.0.

I might sit down and go through the catalog this weekend if I find idle time.

Since I don't believe, like mentioned before, that Delphi or any of their vendors sell to the public on a small order basis we would have to go through a vendor on a group buy or for one person to make a large order. Thus the purpose of this thread.

Also, bear in mind, that Delphi is just one, although major, brand of connectors used in our vehicles. The others would require expert knowledge.

I'm willing to be the guy that buy the minimum order from the vendor, but I have to know if you guys are willing to buy the stuff.

As far as the actual harness is concerned, the engineering group specializes in wire harnesses so they can make it for us to our specs, but that doesn't mean a kit of just connectors so that you can make your own wiring isn't possible.

If you do plan on separating the connectors from the sensor be careful. Do take a small flathead screwdriver with you as these connectors have a locking mechanism which prohibits you from pulling them apart unless the lock has been engaged. Call me if you have any difficulties or have questions. The number is in the sig.

Probably on the knock sensors too. I just scrapped a couple old Ford engine harnesses and was surprised at all the foil in the remains.
