Default 2.0T or 3.8?!

Hey guys! I'm new to here and have never really gotten to say hello!

My question is plain and simple, 2.0T or 3.8? I live up in Canada and we have very few gen coupes in the first place, and very few 3.8s. I do want a 3.8 but finding one that matches what I want is near impossible & insane prices. So I have decided to look at the 2.0T which is relatively cheap, I can get a 2.0T GT ( Premium) fully loaded for still a few grand cheaper then a bare base 3.8.

A few concerns of mine though for the 2.0T are the following:
1) The 2.0T specs show that it gets top torque at 2k RPM.. What's this about? Is this a big deal? I've had a little experience with manual and it seems that it would just be a lot of shifting since going much above 2k+ would be pointless. Maybe I am totally wrong, just seems weird to me. If someone can explain to me how the 2.0T manual is.
2) I've heard and seen that there are quite a few problems with the manual in the genesis coupe, of all years and trims. Is this true? What do you guys recommend?
3) How is the overall power and feel of the 2.0T and how easy and worthwhile is it to mod the car.

Also, I'd just like to hear the pros and cons from you guys! What do you recommend getting, what you don't recommend! Any and all information is appreciated!

Thank you!

I'm posting here so I can remember to try to be helpful if someone doesn't get to this before I get to my computer.

assuming you're talking about 2012 (or earlier) model, since money is a major factor.

for my money... still go with "base" 3.8 because that's the R-Spec model.

a shitzload better performance, Brembos, 19" alloys, two-tone interior, track ready!

Sorry I must have written it wrong, a 2.0T with everything, the brembos, bigger wheels is cheaper then a complete base model 3.8, not the rspec or premium.

I wont get to a computer anytime soon, but i would say 2.0t. It really depends on what you want....power now or a bolt on masterpiece.

The 2.0 has a larger selection when it comes to after market and making power for cheap. The power on the 2.0 is horrible when u first test drive the car.....its a surge that falls on its face at 5500 rpms.

But if you look through various threads in tech section u will see that for about 1500 to 2000 dollars u will be pushing the same hp and tons more torque then a none modded 3.8! The power band gets alot better and plus you get the fun of playing with the car.

With that said...this puts ur warranty in danger and you will hit a wall where modding becomes expensive bc of internals that need to be addressed (debatable but 300 whp is the best number from what i have seen).

Both cars are great! I hope this helps, this is what i determined after running into this same question.

Sorry for grammer.....smart phones are not my friend!

I own a 2.0T Rspec...so...

1.) That's not how power works. You will keep making power beyond 2K. It's just "torquey" down low. Makes for lots of fun, actually. Still puts a goofy smile on my face.

2.) It's a Hyundai. Some are luckier than others...

3.) Still puts a goofy smile on my face, AND impresses anyone who rides/drives it. Even a few of my Mustang buddies. By easy to mod, do you mean, how well it responds? I think it responds well, especially compared to the 3.8. You could buy a 2.0T and take the money you would've spent on the 3.8 for mods. The 2.0T will probably be faster. If you're into being the 'fastest' anyway.

Pros- Goofy smile; Lots of people ask about the car; It's cheap; It's awesome; What other manufacturer is currently producing a cheap RWD 2.0T?; Fun in the twisties; "Quick" when modded

Cons- Goofy smile; Lots of people ask about the car; It's cheap; It's awesome; Transmission woes; Slow in stock form;

That's all I can currently think of.

To other members... I'm not trying to turn this into a 2.0 vs 3.8 thread. Hold your horses...Get it? Horses?

I was unsure as well but the price difference is big. I wanted a 3.8 track and it was 7-8 k over my car. I decided to go with the 2.0 r-spec and get a tune and a couple of other goodies and now I don't regret my purchase.

I'm also new and considering the differences between the two...could you explain a little further what you mean here? I've been looking and i haven't found anything that would make up the power differential without spending a lot more than $2000...

whats your price range? i cant really answer this without knowing that. for the money i personally feel that the 2013 3.8 r spec is the best "driver's car" on the market. I for one am also staying very conservative with modifications to maintain my warranty which is why i went for the higher HP from the factory. but if you are buying pre-owned i guess warranty is less of an issue.

There's only a $2000 difference between the 2.0T and the 3.8?

From base 2.0T to base (R-Spec) 3.8 its about $4000. From R-Spec to R-Spec it's a $2000 difference, and from 2.0T Prem to 3.8 R-Spec, the price is the same. The biggest price gap being $8K from the base 2.0T to the 3.8 Track.

Sooo... Even with $2K to spend, you'd be a formidable opponent at 250-260WHP for a 3.8, due to shorter gearing in the 2.0T.

Under $20k, or if the car really is right then I might go over but I'd like to stay close to that, or cheaper if possible. And would the warranty be transferable, just depending where you bought it? Sorry, new to the car buying process...

Thanks for the comparisons! I didn't know the gearing was shorter in the 2.0T.

I had a 2007 350z, and a 2000 540i prior to my 2013 Genesis 2.0T. All were 6 speed manual. I noticed a lot of people complaining about their Genesis transmissions, I can understand complaints about its reliability, if they're not induced by the owners themselves trashing their trannies because they suck at driving a manual. The Genesis transmission shifts just like any 'sports' rear wheel drive car with a decent amount of power, it takes a little learning/feeling out. If you're looking for a manual transmission that is easy to shift get a Honda Civic.

I had my 350z for 40k miles, and even though the forums were full of "Third gear grinds, 20k mi on the car" threads I never had a single problem with mine.

Not trying to offend anyone, but surfing through here sometimes...somebody call a wambullance.

3.8 base
add brembo found on ebay (1000$)
add coilovers (1300$)
add sway bars (350)

your good to go
and better than a 3.8 GT
not much more than a 2.0gt with the extra goodies to make more power with 2.0t
and much more reliable way to go with 3.8

comes with leather seats, infinity radio, sunroof, push start, and LSD

Since when does a base model come with leather, LSD, and push start?

I have a 2010 3.8 GT MT. Love it. I drove the 2.0T but didnt like the lag before the turbo kicked in. 3.8 pulls strong through the whole RPM range.

The tranny is tempormental but I found it get's much better once its warm and you can't baby it.
