Depends on how severe the cracking is. One solution is to call up your insurance company and they should be able to send a repair guy for free (if you're covered). A dude shows up, pumps some gel-like thing into the crack, waves his hands magically, then bam...the crack is sealed. Quick and easy.
I got a crack on a Honda Accord once and the seal definitely helped a lot. However, you can still tell there used to be a more noticeable crack if you look closely.

Yeah, we called the insurance company about a replacement, and that will not be covered under our deductible plan.
I haven't asked them about repairs, but I have a feeling they will also say no to that. How about auto glass repair shops? Are they decent? The crack is around the interior mirror, and I can't really gauge how severe they are. |

Some insurance companies will repair / replace windshields for free, but most have stopped doing it. If the crack is small enough it can be repaired pretty cheaply, if not you have to replace the windshield. I think I paid ~$160 for mine. Some places will try to charge you $200+ based on offering you 1-2 years of road hazard insurance etc. In my opinion it's not really worth it though. I've had one crack in 12 years, so if my experience is even remotely indicative of the actual statistics you're way better off taking your chances with the cheaper deal.
Bear in mind cracks spread, especially if the windshield is heated or cooled (i.e. changing weather) the expansion and contraction will cause the crack to spread, so take care of it sooner than later. I think the rule of thumb is if it's smaller than a dollar bill, it can usually be repaired.

Insurance here claims smaller than a dollar too.
No-deductible full glass coverage here though too.

My windshield met a rock two weeks after I got my car. There were no aftermarket windshield available, so they had to get one from Hyundai. Cost was $378 for windshield, $120 for consumables and labor. This was from Safelite Autoglass. No-deductible windshield replacement=good.

I had to get my windshield replaced, it was in the $500 range. The windshield isnt readily available, so it had to be ordered from the dealership.
You can file the windshield under your comprehensive. Just pay the deductible and your rates wont go up. My deductible is $100, so its all i had to pay for a $600+ job. |

I have had this experience as well. This time, they sent along the dealer receipt for the windshield. So, they may have been able to do something with the $120, but not the part cost. If you have an "in" with a parts department, though....

There's services that you can call that'll just go to your house or place of business that can fix the windshield by filing in the cracks with some sort of polymer.

Thank you, guys.
For now I just took it to an auto glass repair shop, Able Auto in Houston (Very friendly people there. Highly recommended,) and I'll just wait it out until I replace it, if I do. It is a noticeable mark, but I don't really see it from the driver's side, and even if I did, I wouldn't really care about it. |

Just replaced mine and Safelite did a great job....as long as your technician did some studying on a car model this new.
First he removed the rubber gaskets under the hood, the windshield gutters protecting the engine, and the windshield wipers. Then he should pop out the plastic molding on each side of the car which runs alongside the windshield up the roof to the rear. Disconnect your rear view mirror, unscrew retainer screw, cut out molding and pop out the windshield. One thing you should make sure is that after he cleans out old rubber sealant, that he attaches a rubber molding on the top of the new windshield. Order OEM and make sure they order this molding with it. He should then apply sealant liberally along the edges, bottom and top. Press new windshield in and you're good to go. Go cheap and you get cheap. Spend the money and replace it. You'll be happier you did. |

So this being a new car, any hint's to how the windsheild is installed differently than, oh, say a car from 2003?

Um... It's not? Glass + Glue? It's just more expensive because the actual windshield is not readily available (according to the above posters)...

Install will only differ on the technician that does the work. I've seen a post where someone got theirs replaced by someone that put a rubber gasket across the top of the windshield. Like I said, I got someone that read up on how to install on this model rather than someone that assumes every windshield is the same.
