Default Beyond Redline inspects the factory turbocharger!

Since we have taken almost everyone else off this new car, we thought why not take a look at the stock turbo system. A few thoughts and then some pictures.

The factory fasteners leave a lot to be desired. The turbo-manifold studs and the cat to turbo studs stripped out and needed to be replaced. Not exactly what we were expecting after only putting 95 miles on the car Needless to say we ordered new ARP hardware for replacement to prevent this from happening again.

As everyone expected the factory turbocharger is really tiny. It might be good for a bit more HP that we are currently making, but not much more. The overall build quality is on par with the other Mitsubishi units we have used. Kinda cool that there is a Hyundai logo cast into the compressor housing.

The exhaust manifold looks very good for a factory production piece. It has a fire sealing ring built into the outlet of the manifold. This facilitates less stress and better sealing on the turbo to manifold gasket. This ring is cast into the manifold itself as one piece. Can't really say when the manifold will become the limiting factor in power production.

If anyone has any further questions we would be happy to share what we have learned thus far. In the mean time enjoy the pictures.

This reminds me of the Burger King commercial "Awww look at those tiny little burgers":

"Awww look a that tiny little turbo" "It's just adorable."

any idea on the size of the turbo? maybe any comparable sized ones that we can look at flow charts?

from all the dynos with bolt ons, it will probably max out at 215-220whp

Its a Mitsubishi Td04 turbo. Couldn't say exactly which variant it is, but we did have an old 1G DSM auto turbo laying around the shop and it matched up pretty closely. Also eyed it up next to a t25 and it was in the same ball park.

Since we have now reached 200whp with our exhaust system...I would say 225, maybe 250 if we can get the damn thing to hold some boost in the upper rpm range.

thanks for the pics, very thorough and informative. I have been waiting for someone to rip it apart. Any thoughts on the integrated bypass valve setup?

Here's some info that may help determine what it is:

Trim Inducer/ Minor Dia. Exducer/ Exducer/ Inducer/ Trim Major Dia. Minor Dia. Major Dia.
TD04 09B 50 1.365 1.93 1.55 1.86 1.6475
TD04 13G 62 1.58 2 1.625 1.812 1.79
TD04H 15C 55 1.638 2.165 1.743 2.028 1.9015
TD04 15G 55 1.625 2.187 1.625 1.812 1.906
TD04H 15G 55 1.625 2.187 1.74 2.047 1.906
TD04 17G 54 1.744 2.382 1.625 1.812 2.063

If you measure the wheels, you might be able to figure out which it is and find the flow charts, if you are curious.

I -think- the 1g autos used a 13g compressor wheel.

Also, I believe that you can swap compressor wheels from any TD04 variant. 02-05 WRXs used the 13t wheel and those turbos could be found very cheaply. You might be able to just swap the entire center section and make more power. I was able to make between 220-230 whp on my WRX on 93 pump gas with that turbo and that includes the more substantial drivetrain loss for AWD. Might be a nice cheap upgrade....

You can get WRX turbo's dime a dozen. I still have a VF 39 and 565 cc injectors sitting here along with a walbro 255lph fuel pump.

heh why am I listing parts. I have a complete wrx in teh driveway that needs a shortblock.

Yes we have a proto type valve block off here now, and should be converting to a real BOV soon. We shall see the real difference.

Is the exhaust manifold 6cm or 7cm? Will a DSM housing like the evo316g fit on the manifold?

I think its actually smaller than any of the DSM patterns. I'll have to measure and post the actual data.

Sadly at this time no DSM turbo's will bolt directly to this manifold...

So were just better off swapping out the turbo immediatly.

The V6 is getting more and more tempting.

The bolt pattern is not your standard DSM turbo bolt pattern. the bolts are spaced slightly closer together, and the center hole is much smaller than a 16g. So nothing is really going to just bolt on.

I haven't given up on the factory turbo yet. We are just searching for the bottle neck in the system, and we desperately need to tune the car. I do believe there is some power left in the factory turbo, just not a lot like got accustomed to with the evo 8/9.

Should be interesting to see how well the heads flow. Not exactly sure why Hyundai put a LSD, brembos etc. on something that is struggling to hit 225whp.

^LSD is on cars that it would compete with (Civic Si has LSD), brembos not sure... bling, maybe? Bragging rights for having more goodies?

Good work, beyond redline, once again... keep it coming
