Default Stock turbo sound?

OK this might sound 'rice' but how loud is the stock turbo when it spools? I'm imagining it's not even noticeable... Is there a way to make it louder (ex. silencer delete) without slapping on a huge turbo?

I don't like being too isolated from what's going on under the hood. I'm not a big fan of loud BOVs or anything flashy, but I enjoy hearing the whine of a turbo/supercharger. I think this noise will make the 2.0T unique in a aural sense, the 3.8 already has that sweet sounding V6.

I know but some might perceive my interest in the sound of a turbo as rice. Just like how some people love BOVs 'just for the sound'. But anyway... back on point. Stock turbo sound?

EDIT:

OMG that video. /facepalm

it depends on what part of the turbo sound you want. do you want the sound in the exhaust? ever hear an open exhaust on a turbo? sounds badass

but replacing the intake with an open filter will make even the stock turbo audible. these should be available as kits soon probably, i think there is an HKS out already.

Honestly, I like the whine. It reminds me that the car has balls.

ohh come on you have to be patient with newbies.

OP i would 1st try replacing the filter on the intake with say a k&n unit. also i am sure that there is some sort of noise reduction type of tubing into the intake that maybe able to be removed. i would simply start with the filter 1st.

boostdog, thanks for your patience lol.

I knew that replacing the air filter on the intake would make things louder. My intention in starting this thread was generally to see how loud the stock turbo is...

I was kind of reluctant in starting this thread in the first place, because I know how these threads usually turn up on other forums. So Golfa, sorry if I wasted your time.

i highly doubt you'll find any info on " how loud it is". i doubt anyone is going around measuring db's of the turbo.

Edit: and you owe me a beer for my patience.

I couldn't hear the turbo at all when I first bought the car, i'm at about 500 miles now and I can hear it much better now. It's still a pretty faint noise but you can still hear it.

I think I know what you mean by rice. Drawing unnecessary attention to yourself, example visual = large spoilers, stickers, retarded body kits, etc. I'm the same way.

Turbo spool is turbo spool and it's not loud, like any other engine accelerates. You start getting ridiculous with a BOV that tells the neighborhood you just shifted into 3rd. I plan on putting an intake on as well that will bring out the spool a tad more but it's noticeable to the driver more then the general public.

I don't think there is anything ricey about wanting to hear the engine/turbo. Part of being an engine guy is loving the noise they make. Personally I find that those who smirk "RICE" and point fingers at every little thing that isn't "this gained x HP" tend to be fairly uneducated and not really "car guys" as they only care about the numbers.

It's like thinking $1 worth of photopaper taped to the back of a shoebox with a pin hole in the other end couldn't possibly take a good picture like a $2500 Nikon setup. Some people are in it for the numbers and status/bragging rights, some are in it for the experience and package. Half the reason I am getting the V6 as opposed to the 2.0 is the noise it makes, pure and simple. If that makes me rice, then pass the soy!

BTW, I have shot some really cool pictures with a shoebox camera and I own a $2500 Nikon setup...

you will never hear the turbo...

it is too small, and it has journal bearings.

not even an aftermarket intake will make you hear the "woosh" of the turbo sucking air in....maybe a little bit, but you'll only hear it from inside the car... no one outside will notice much.

heres a few vids of what you hear on a car with an upgraded turbo
Supra with upgraded twins vs bolt-on 'Busa(the "Walser" Supra)

685hp RX-7, Skip to 8:15 and go from there, you'll clearly hear the turbo

Thanks for all the info guys!

I still don't understand why some are mistaking my intentions as 'rice'. What is wrong with wanting to hear the turbo spool? I'm not trying to broadcast to the world that I have a turbo car. In fact, if it was possible that I could keep the outside noise to a minimum that would be optimal.

I just think the whining sound is cool. Is that taboo or something?

I have an Alpine kit on my Tib which uses a small TD04 turbo and you can hear the turbo spool quite nicely. There is about 2 feet of piping with the MAF and a open element air filter. You can also hear the recirculating BOV quite well also.

nothing is wrong with wanting to hear the sound of your turbo whine, but modifying the car simply for that reason/end is where the rice factor comes into play. You should want to mod to enhance the performance of your car, not the sounds it makes. But if the only return on your modifying investment is noise, then go at it i guess!

my srt has a td04 and i have stock intake and you can hear it spool. you could also hear the surge valve.

To say you wont hear it is ignant son. get an intake and you'll hear it, turn up the boost, you'll probably hear it more then too.

i know for one thing, my car the sound was deeper with a bigger front mount, it was more high pitched with a little front mount...probably from it being a crappy intercooler lol
