Default Manual Transmission

Is popping the clutch bad?

IE: You're in first gear with the clutch in, rev the engine up, and let out the clutch.

Yes, it will wear the clutch down very quickly among other things.

tie a rope around your waist.
tie the other end of the rope to a wall.
run really fast away from the wall.
it may hurt, but wont kill you.

your clutch and drivetrain can take alot of abuse. but its not indestructable.
broken axles, twisted drive shafts, busted gears (transmition/differential) twisted crankshaft. some exaples of what can go wrong.

Don't forget the dual-mass flywheel.

you can do burnouts.

just commit. "dump" the clutch... dont let it out slow.

then you wont slip, which if you do will toast the clutch quickly.

now will it hurt the clutch, yes over time it will.

there are springs in the center section of the clutch, when you engage it those springs ( during normal opperation ) dampen the twisting force when the clutch touches the flywheel.

think of twisting a rubber band. it absorbs some of the energy. so you get less "chatter"

now when you "dump" the clutch, you smash those springs fast, sometimes even breaking them out of the clutch disk.

i have seen smashed, broken, rubbed springs in clutches after going to the drag strip.

now can you do it, yeah you can. just realize that eventually...... you will need a clutch.

You'd better be careful doing this, if you just feel like you HAVE to do it.

I don't think there are any aftermarket companies producing clutch kits for the Coupe yet. If I'm wrong then I apologize, but I am not aware of any.

This type of damage will most CERTAINLY not be covered under warranty. If you think that the techs at the dealership can't tell that's what really happened to the clutch, you will be in for quite a surprise when they quote you 2 or 3 hours worth of labor and $1300 worth of parts to replace your clutch (yes that's how much the Hyundai clutch and pressure plate are right now for the Coupe). And that's assuming you don't damage the dual-mass flywheel which can't be machined and will cost another $2000 or so.

So yeah, go ahead, go do a few clutch-dropping burnouts. It's good for business.

from a drag strip audi s4

drive shaft from a corolla (ae86?)
posters description - "twisted driveshaft that ate the hard lines to my brakes and for my gas (wrapped around what's left of the driveshaft like a vine); it twisted up my e-brake cables too and did some damage to the O2S (O2 sensor), cat (catalytic converter), and exhaust piping (left side pic)"

S4 is awd.... and like 400hp something HAS to give in that situation.

ae86..... yeah probably happened... but his diff probably gernaded first. as they dont make enough power to twist your nipples.

( i owned one i should know )

dont be scared of your car. just realize there are ramifications for everything you do.

one of the main way for drifters to initiate is clutch kicking, basically dumping the clutch while moving.

yeah they have upgraded clutches. but alot of them including my corolla still had a sprung hub clutch...... i had more than 6 events on my clutch ( and driveshaft ) and felt just like the day i put it in.

I don't feel like I HAVE to do it, I was just curious (never done this, btw). I've heard people talk about this before and it's usually complimented with an evil smile. No one has ever really mentioned the ramifications of doing this. I figured it couldn't be good since neutral dropping an automatic is terrible.

Thanks for the responses! Lulz at that subby...
