Well, it's confirmed. The name change that the Korean Kia Spectra - named Cerato in the aforementioned market - will undergo will apply to the American version of the car as well. Automotive News has reported that Kia will rename the Spectra compact

Hyundai where is your DI turbo I4 engine that your sister company is using ?

Honestly if Hyundai does not use the DI Turbo 4 engine for the Genesis in 2010. I will not buy one. I will simply buy a 2011 genesis and by then they will relalize what we all want, or at least give the choice.

seriously, I can't buy the Genesis i4 if it doesn't use the DI, because that little FWD coupe will be faster and cheaper. I can't buy the V6 because the price will be way too high compared to having 20hp less in the KIA. I won't buy the Kia because it's FWD... I really hope they fix this situation.

I would imagine that the competing cars are going to be in the mid 20k range and Kia has great prices and have been selling cars even our present economy,a increase over last year i read.

The Kia Coupe will have a 2.0 I4 turbocharged 290hp/289lbs-torque /all-wheel drive () / gasoline direct inject engine & 6 speed auto with steering-column mounted paddle shifters,19in wheels (no Brembos) a nice stereo-Jukebox audio 8 speaker system, built in blue-tooth navigation system and other similar Hyundai coupe items.

Kia is aggresively going after the younger American crowd (you know they have insight on the Genesis Coupe) and this is one to be watched.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is'nt the Kia supposed to be only fwd? Even if it did come with awd, and is inexpensive, they would have to do something with the styling and wheels before I would even look at one...

Seriously, if it's AWD 290hp turbo i4 for around the same as the Genesis 4, or even 6cyl, why would anyone buy the genesis unless they are basing the decision on looks alone? I'm no marketing guru, but this just doesn't make sense to me from a business stand point.

Hyundai is not putting the GDI motor in the Coupe. In a recent press interview for the Sedan it was stated by Hyundai that the GDI is a future tech thing for the Coupe.

The Koup will most likely not be AWD. Like stated this would completely step on the Genesis Coupe's toes. Kia will release the 290 GDI I4t in the Koup and use that as a test bed for the engine to determine if that is what they want to commit to for the Coupe. They will then take that knowledge and apply it to the I4t GenCoupe and the Lambda II V6 with GDI... Kia has even more of a stigma than Hyundai in the states, with the Genesis platform being so pivotal to Hyundai's future, they are not going to risk so much new tech on it. Use the lower platform to testbed the GDI, then inthe 2nd gen, or mid 1st gen revision to introduce the tech to the genesis.

They are also talking about cylinder deactivation in the Tau for the next iteration.

Thumbs up

Here is the link for the Kia Koup

Kia Motors America - Kue, Kee, Soul, Koup

And of course on the bottom of the spec page they have stated that all info is subject to change without notice,so why even say it in the first place ?
Kia is coming with a 2.0 coupe in 2009.That is all they have said in the press release. The other clue is from their web site,i just added it together.Who knows they may just use the exact engine & specs the Hyundai 2.0 coupe is using. If so why would they advertise that monster 2.0 290hp/289ft-lb engine on their site for their Koup ?
AWD(per Kia's site) with all that power would balance the wheels out, like the EVO does, but i also read elsewhere it would be FWD.
I wish Hyundai & Kia would update their sites on these cars with accurate info !

I am still leaning torwards the Genesis I4 SE if the price is right and keeping an option open for the Kia once true specs are released.
I am driving a GID turbo engine (Mazda SPD3) and its a blast with power right underneath your foot, and hopefully Hyundai,Kia will ultilize this technology. Also my trip computer is reading 22.4 mpg / city and that's with a CAI/DP & CBE,these cars can and are very gas effecient.

Yes a great FAST car. Mazda is no longer making them only 2007 & 08.

I have a mechanical boost guage for my Hatchi-BorgWarner turbo
16.7psi and it usually runs to 9-15 on the guage and what torque and pickup, enough to pull you back in your seat,of course around the suburbs its hard to really run it hard because of traffic, small turbo but very impressive performance.
My point is i am excited about the turbo Hyundai will be putting on the I4,let alone a RWD with turbo boost. On my car the pull with the FWD is very dramatic and noticeable making you smile,i can only imagine what that will feel like pushing you from behind with the Hyundai RWD !

Per official release
Kia plans to introduce the brand's first ever coupe next summer, a couple of months after the new Spectra sedan goes on sale by mid-2009. The new coupe will reportedly be based on the Koup concept, first shown at the New York Auto Show just a few short months ago.

Hyundai owns kia and is probably going to shift the fwd sport coupe into the kia market to make way for the rwd genesis coupe. It looks like they are going to make the push to have Hyundai as their more upscale line and kia the sporty and more economical line ???

Hyundai only ownes 38.6% of KIA. I know this because I am a sales consultant for Hyundai here in Canada. Source is here;

Auto/Motor Cars Space: Hyundai Genesis Coupe to Land on Korea in September

"Separately, Kia Motors Corp. (000270.SE), 38.6%-owned by Hyundai..."

Hyundai does not control KIA in any way. But they share ideas, and profit.
