Right, but potential is no longer an issue as it's illegal to mod in china.

To the OP, now that you said that about modding, i'd get a 3.8, slap on an axle back, a CAI and NSPP and call it a day. You can take all that off in a half hour before your bi annual inspections and then slap it all back on.

more things to consider...

Evo 9...STi's are a lot better, it looks like a big bug, interior is cheap and crappy looking, and lastly it's made by Mitsubishi...enough said.

EVO 9

Pros:
AWD, with torque split control
Light
4 seats

Cons:
Turning radius (find yourself doing 3 point turns more often )
Racing clutch (from factory. Find yourself stalling from stop to first, a few times before you get use to it)

350Z
Pros:
2 seats (can be a pro or a con, depending on how you look at it)
power/weight
price

Cons:
They are EVERYWHERE
Everything except in front of the drive is bland, as far as interior.
2 seats
They are EVERYWHERE

Genesis Coupe 3.8
Pros:
New
Warranty (10 year/100,000 miles)
4 seats
LSD (w/ track pack)
V6

Cons:
Bluetooth (if its anything like mine )
4 seats (rear seats, no head room)
the Hyundai stigma (but I see that gradually going away)
price
Aftermarket following (as of recent)

Have you considered an STI? Performance-wise it's a good alternative to the evo and has a nicer interior (and is arguably better looking depending on what year you get).

On the Sti, yes I'd consider it. I actually really like the way the last model looks. And from what I heard it's just that little bit easier to live with than an Evo.

Problem is, it wasn't available in China at the time, all you can find are WRX's which are missing too many STi bits to make them a solid choice I think. The new STi is available in China, but as it's still pretty new it's too expensive (even 2nd hand) and I really, really hate the look of the new model...

Ah well, gonna take a look at a tidy evo 9 tomorrow and see what the Hyundai dealer can offer me as well

Actually, it would be the other way around. The STI is much, much easier to live with day-to-day. The ride is better, the engine produces much more torque -- assuming China gets the big 2.5L engine the U.S. does, and the interior is better overall, except the seats. The Evo is not a comfortable car to drive for a long time. However, it is much faster than an STI and responds to modifications well.

The only major upgrade the STI has over the WRX is the Prodrive designed six-speed with DCCD. The WRX five-speed is much weaker in comparison and is purely mechanical. Power wise, the STI benefits from a higher red line because of a slightly revised valve train. But you can make a Rex hang with an STI on the cheap.

LOL I grew up with STi... that car that is.

But its like this. EVO 9 MR > STi. Stock for stock that is. STi needs some major over work with its suspension to get rid of the nasty understeer, then you gottah learn how to use the DCCD. Evo's AWC does an awesome job and better than the STi's DCCD... in way.

For the average joe, driving the evo will be ur car sense the evo is an sti with training wheels. makes you look like Tommi Makinin. =P

Add a new turbo and the sky is the limit; 11 second Evos are not rare.

That said, he sold if for a 350Z because of insurance, gas costs, and comfort.

You know what i find funny? Is how a lot of guys who own genesis coupes that cost as much as a evo is telling the guy to choose that as a #1 pic. I wonder if I'm the only one who notices this because those members should've just went along and buy the evo too. I'm not hating, I'm just saying.

LMAO! WORD MAN!

I was going to go with an EVO X but the cost to own that sucker is what I make in a month. The EVO IX would be 75% of that. LOL But the EVO X has the AYC that the IX doesn't have *USDM spec that is* that is so worth getting an EVO for. (For those who don't know what AYC is Search it! It makes you drive like a God!) lol

I got my Genesis due to that final decision that there was going to be a posibility of me getting stuff done on R&D work and get my name put out there. So far its been good. =) It fell through.

The gf and I are tryinig to get an EVO X but she still hasn't found a job and doesn't look like we're going to get that EVO X anytime soon. =P

When thinking about buying a new car, the evo x was a first choice for me too! BUT it wouldve cost damn near 40 grand for everything I wanted! Screw that so I just bought the next car on my list Plus, I was ready to get something a bit more grown up. The evo x just has "race me" written all over it. Don't get me wrong, i play in the genny , but I just like how it doesn't LOOK like I do.

I went from an Evo to the GC and I did so because of what I was looking for in a car. I needed something that was more civilized and more highway friendly. There are many times that I miss my Evo especially when I need some instant power but I have no regrets about getting this car. I have even considered about buying another Evo for a track car but the wife would kick my ass. I'm sure once the GC is paid off then I will have a better chance of getting another one while keeping the GC as a daily driver.

Actually I really appreciate the honesty, I very much doubt I would get it on the evo forums, they just wouldn't accept the comparison. In my case, the Genesis has had a profound effect on my perception of Hyundai and I'm sure many of you are converts too. But still, it's probably not your dream car, right? (that's d be a GTR or an Aston V12 Vantage for me, yumm...)

Despite being a compromise tho, I think the Genesis is an excellent car & good value for money, which I think most of you will agree on. Just not sure yet whether I value outright speed over what the Genesis offers.

Well, at the end of it all, I've bought a used Evo 9. A big issue with the Genesis in the end was that I couldn't change the brakes, even to the US spec track model Brembo's without voiding the warranty, which is a major advantage of buying a new Hyundai.

Well that, and I actually got to test drive the Evo properly, which wasn't really possible with the Genesis. It feels like nothing I've ever driven, sort of like a big cart with brutal acceleration.

All the same, I had my reasons, but I still think the Genesis is a great car, you should all be proud! I'll looking forward to what Hyundai does with it over the next few years.

Well congrats on the car! It sounds like you went to a pretty awful Hyundai dealership if they didn't let you REALLY test the car and that they said that if you changed your brakes you'd void your warranty.

What really matters though, is that you bought yourself a great car, and I hope you enjoy it. And just because you bought something else doesn't mean you can't still hang out here and shoot the sh!t with us...unless you don't want to.

Jared, I wouldn't say that about the Genesis. Remember, this car has not been out for long, so don't lose hope yet. Hell, look at KamKaze and MSUGeoman... No blown motors yet! hah!

Not really the dealership's fault on the test driving, manufacturers in China need to get to jump through all kinds of hoops to get approval to have their cars available for test driving and it's incredibly expensive, so only some manufacturer's cars can be test driven. And no, it doesn't make any sense.

Hyundai's can only be driven on the dealer premises. And nobody seems to buy the 3.8 as the snob value is too low (few people buy a car for how it drives...), so there's none in stock. The brake thing really sucked tho.

Anhyway, yes, this a great place to lurk hehe.

Good news for all of us is that the Genesis is coming to Europe, which should certianly swell the growing ranks of fans.

In fact, go to Streetfire.com and look for episode of 1, season 11 of Top Gear and go through to the news section, you'll see them talking about it....sort of....

Sorry, can't post the link as I haven't posted enough.

Jeremy never was very nice about Korean cars, but I do look forward to them driving it. They certainly like performace cars that can outrun more expensive machines and I'm curious how it'll rank on the power board.
