Well, as the title says, that's the choice I'm faced with. I can go for a brand new Gencoupe 3.8 or 2nd hand 350Z or Evo9, even tho they're a bit tricky to find. (in Shanghai)
I'll use it for getting to work and back, which is painfully slow city driving...., but also track days and weekend mountain road blasts. Way I see it, the upsides on the Evo 9 are: - Significantly faster - 4WD => good in all weather conditions - Less depreciation (2nd hand + a bit rare) - Awesome recaro seats - Good manual gearbox While downsides are: - Interior really feels cheap - Evo 9 is tempremental and needs lots of servicing, which is kind of a problem here - Looks like a sedan with a wing stuck on the back to try and make it look impressive... - Stock, the Engine sounds like a vacuum cleaner - 2nd hand as opposed to new As for the 350 Z: - Looks about as good - Better residuals on a Nissan car - More of a pure sports car aka better on a track? (don't actually know that one) - Better gearbox? But: - 2 seats only - Performance is only about the same as a GenCoupe - Still only 2nd hand for the same money Would really like to know if anyone else has driven/owned either and whether you would agree with this assessment? Thanks! |

On the Evo9 you also have to consider sence its a 2nd hand car. Engine and transmission problem possibilities. Service every 3-4k highly recomended. Gas burns extremely quick, so not recomended for city use. Tires are very expensive for this car.
350Z have issues with burning lots of oil. Unless if its a 2006+ model then you're good. thats about it rly. I'd go witht he 9 =P

Depends on how much you plan on using the rear seats. For me, I'll need them at least once, and that rules out the 370Z (or 350 for that matter). I'm a Mitsu owner, and thus not a big fan of theirs. I love my Eclipse, but I'm not a big fan of their newer stuff. I'm going for the GC for Looks, Power/Value, Performance, and I think that it is just a nice car. Plus, I prefer NEW to slightly USED. There is no way of telling exactly how the previous owner handled her!
I don't think I'd be too far off base to guess that most people on this Forum would lean towards the GC.

Every car has its ups and downs. However, if you want to turn heads, the genesis is the way to go.

Personally, it would be between the evo and the genny. Being the former owner of 2 moderately modded dsm's, I know and love the power you can make with the 4g63 engine. However, so do like a million other people. Lol. The genesis was something fun, new and damn sexy. I'd lean towards the genesis, of course.

As a person that just traded in an Evo and now a current owner of a GC I can tell you first hand the pluses and minuses of owning an Evo. As with any car maintenance is the key to ensuring longevity. The Evo is maintenance intensive. Not because it's fragile, quite the contrary. If all you do is daily drive it without track adventures then you could live with changing your oil every 3k and your transmission/transfer cases every 15k. But most Evo owners don't just daily drive their cars. Afterall that's what they weren't built for. I don't know how many Evos are in Shanghai so it might be difficult to find one. In the U.S. it's pretty easy to find one if you are willing to travel a little bit. Once you find one then you have to make sure it wasn't thrashed on. There are things to look for and if you find one then I can answer better. But I think all of this is moot since you are looking for something to get back and forth to work so I think a GC would better suit you anyway. Good luck.

If you're looking for speed, the Evo is unmatched in your list. Stock for stock, it will blow away the GC and the 350Z in handling and acceleration by a significant amount. Once you start considering upgrades, the gap widens. My friend had an Evo9 with intake, exhaust, cams, and a tune and put down ~320 AWHP. Add a new turbo and the sky is the limit; 11 second Evos are not rare.
That said, he sold if for a 350Z because of insurance, gas costs, and comfort.

As for the Z, my dad owned one and I drove it a lot, to be honest I was never really that impressed with it. I can't say I've ever driven an Evo though. I do agree with you though that it looks like a econo sedan with a big wing on the back. Out of your list, I would personally choose the GenCoupe, but it really all depends on what you want from your car.

All the cars you mention are meant to be driven. IMHO, any car that's meant to be driven should be bought new. You won't have to be concerned about how badly the previous owner treated her. For a little bit more cash, you have the peace of mind that if something gets screwed up, you did it.
Now if you were looking for a beater/daily driver, go used Last edited by Curl2k1; 02-08-2010 at 08:58 AM.. Reason: Typos |

you could say the same about the gencoupe. Ironically, the evo probably has the most functionality (4 doors, sedan body), but also the hardest to upkeep and maintain.

New car=warranty,used=pay out of pocket
Depends on how much modding you plan on doing but the 3.8 has some pep right out of the show room.IMO

Thanks a lot for the insights everybody, it's really helpfull!
For years I dreamt of owning an evo, it's genuinely as good as just about any other car at certain things. But....well, there's no real official support from Mitsubishi, so it's a bit of a crapshoot finding a good place to service it Plus I couldn't afford a new Evo X, import duties are ridiculous in China If I find a really tidy 9, I might go for it, but no luck yet.So, I'm starting to lean Genesis coupe. Well, and being in China people actually fit in the back seats Well, my Western friends might be a bit cramped....![]() Modding cars here is illegal, but really you only need to make sure you can turn it into a normal spec car for a bi-annual inspection. Still, I think the 3.8 would make more sense that way. Will also need to import the brembo's as they're not offered as standard on any spec... Can't really think of anything the 350Z would offer over a Gencoupe apart from maybe a tiny bit of badge snobbery (but come on, it's still just a Nissan... makers of the almighty GTR, but also the Sunny...) |
