High mileage reliability

Hey guys,

I was wondering how the high mileage gen coupes are holding up. Any reliability issues for cars with over or close to 100K miles on them? Or is it just basic maintenance?

Thanks!

Thanks! Hoping to get a little more feedback with regards to reliability as well as some updated numbers! Hopefully those cars are still running strong!

You'll get that if you read through the threads I linked, the second thread is the most recent with some updates from @WildBill . His car is probably your best case study, constant commuting, tracking, long road trips, Texas summers and modded almost the entire time, he sold the car with 150K+ miles and as far as I know it's still on the road with no issues other than some cracked bumpers. He also took excellent care of the car which is a consistent theme amongst the high mileage owners here. He's now working on doing the same mileage on a 2012 3.8 track.

That highest mileage/oldest coupe thread is due for some updates, why don't you bump it? Quite a few of those members are still active.

yeah i read through it all, most people seemed to say it was just regular maintenance but then there were a couple of people who had to replace minor things like the ecu. Would you say that besides the early hiccups the car is rock solid if it was properly maintained?

This is key! Most gear heads know this, but you can take your most reliable Toyota/Honda/Nissan, etc and turn it into a pile of junk in less than 100,000 miles. It always amazes me to hear people bash on a car, regardless of brand, and then see how they take care of it.

I've owned a variety of American, European, and Asian cars...they ALL last a long time. But I take care of my stuff. I have a '99 Ford Ranger that I bought with 198,000 miles on it...the maintenance schedule was in the glove box when I bought it, and the first owner logged EVERYTHING for the first 100k or so, until he sold it. The rest is a guess...but I've got 233,000 miles on it right now and it runs great.

My Genesis Coupe just passed 20,000 miles this week, and I expect it to go well over 200,000 miles even though I autocross it regularly...if I still own it in 15 to 20 years I'll report back. Haha.

Yeah, proper maintenance is the key to a car's longevity. Granted, there are some..."quirks" that Hyundai has yet to work out, like the manual trans. I imagine if you bought an auto you were pretty much square. As far as my personal record, I'm now at over 120k and other than the 6spd regularly hating 5th gear at anything above 4.5k rpm, and a few odd buzzing rattles (the sunglasses holder being the main culprit), I take good care of her and she's been solid. I hope to keep her well into 200k, even though I'll have to constantly granny shift into 5th when highway merging

Yeah, that shifting issue would make me look for a solution. I do have an A/T, but I thought I've heard of someone getting upgraded syncro's to fix the shifting issue in the manuals.

My sunglasses holder was buzzing, too, BTW! Then I realized it was my sunglasses...lol. I think every car has quirks...I've never had one that was perfect. Some are easier to live with, though.

Is this gear 4-5 change problem common for all 2010 2.0T's?

Thanks

Maybe I am just lucky in regards to that since I have 83k on mine and never really had that issue.

I had it slightly before changing to redline trans oil, basically gone completely since I changed the oil though.

Not too familiar with this issue but would you say it effects most 2010 2.0t's?
Also was the issued solved for 2011 MY cars?

The same transmission was used for all 2010-2012 2.0T coupes, so yes the 5th and 6th gear grinding has been a problem for all of those model years but it doesn't effect all cars, it's hit and miss, some cars never have the issue. Additionally the same manual transmission has been used in all model year 3.8s and 13+ 2.0Ts and it also experiences this problem occasionally. They are both Hyundai designed transmissions so it appears to be a design and/or manufacturing issue.

I see. So is it the 4-5 change like others have said or is the 5-6 gear change? Also was this not covered under the bumper to bumper warranty, or was it something hyundai just said deal with???

It can be either or, based on my time here reading about the issues I think the more common one is the 5-6 grind but I could be wrong, in general 5th seems to be the problem gear for those with the issue. Hyundai has replaced many transmissions with this issue, some members multiple times, so yes it is covered and is a known issue even if they don't exactly come out and admit it. In some cases people have lessened the problem with better fluid, replacing the clutch line, upgraded shifter bushings, etc. but these should not be considered a fix.

Here's a thread going back to 2009 on the topic: OFFICIAL THREAD: Manual Transmission Issues

Edit: And this older thread with a member poll about the issue: Poll: 5th Gear grind survey for HMA mgmt

Over 100k here, everything working perfect been Stage 1+ since 50k, been Stage 2 for last 10k. 6 speed works beautifully still, running Mitsu Diaqueen oil and all ATQ shifter/bushings, and comp stage 2 clutch. Only thing that went wrong was blown headgasket at around 60k. Was a total fluke, happened on startup. After the dealer gave me some hassle about my exhaust, I told them to eat **** and fix it cause the exhaust doesnt blow HG's. Fixed it for free with a whole new head casting and spark plugs. Other than that zero issues.

69k on mine. Minor stuff mostly covered in warranty. Biggest issue was front wheel bearing becoming uneven causing wheel to vibrate annoyingly at high speed. They replaced it under warranty. If I was a 2nd owner, that would cost a good chunk of money tho. Leather seat is beginning to show its age, but it's not premium leather so it's as expected. Otherwise, this car is holding up real well. I have a new Corvette Stingray now for just over a month, but I feel more connected to the road when I drive my GenCoupe, probably something about driving a slower car fast is more fun than a faster car slow blah blah, kinda why I still have the GC.

After having the tranny replaced at 8k.... car has been great......

Doesn't burn oil....

Just put some dye on the seats, where there was wear....

Car has been as good to me as my former Honda/Acura's.....

Its a keeper!

164k on my 2010 3.8, only done standard preventative maintenance to it including 10k mile oil change intervals because I drive mainly highway miles, doesn't burn any oil at all. Have not replaced anything other than normal stuff like tires, brake pads, and rotors. Still on the original clutch as well.

I take that back - I replaced the $8 door switch that drops the window when you press it. That's it.

Hyundai copied the design from ZF who made the same style transmission for VW and BMW. Who also had shifting problems with the trans. Hyundai manufactures the trans in the Gen Coupe.
