Genesis Coupe Coming Back!?

I hope this hasn't been posted before, but I did search the forums and didn't see mention of it.

I checked out the Portland Auto Show today and it was great. Not as great as last year, but still well worth going to. Anyway, I was over the Genesis G80 and G90 section, which was separate from the Hyundai section. One of the reps came over and asked if I had any questions. I told him how I had purchased a Genesis Coupe last month and was loving it. I asked if there were any plans down the road to bring the coupe back. To my surprise, he said they are actually working on one at the moment. He didn't have any details on it other that though. Does anyone else know any more about this?

This has been confirmed by Hyundai for a while now. It'll be a completely different car though; bigger, heavier, and with larger engines. The base engine will be a V6, and the optional engine will be a V8. No more 4 cylinder.

It doesn't really sound like true successor to the current Genesis Coupe, which is a lively, chuckable car. Expect more technology, more luxury, and a much bigger price tag. Hyundai wants to take the Genesis brand way up-market, and it shows in their concept cars.

If the Genesis Coupe gets a real spiritual successor, it will probably wear a Kia badge. Simple, lightweight, rear wheel drive. That's a big if though. Hyundai is in trouble financially. Cheap gas has drastically slowed down the sales of their affordable compact cars. They aren't really competitive in the realm of trucks and SUVs, which is where all the growth/money in USA cars sales is right now. Plus the new presidential administration is making Hyundai's investors nervous. The Hyundai group isn't nearly as well-positioned to pivot into drastically increased USA-based manufacturing the way Honda and Toyota are.

That previous point is probably moot anyway though. The last thing the global car industry needs right now is drastically increased production capacity. New car sales have been at record highs for a while now, it has to slow down eventually. When it does, all those shiny new factories will just be big financial holes in the ground.

Suffice to say, the future of sporty, RWD cars from Hyundai is rather uncertain for now. The new bigger, faster, techier Genesis Coupe will probably go into production since they've already done so much development work on it at this point. Anything else though is hard to fathom.

The most recent reports do call for a twin-turbo V6, which would make an NA V8 pretty redundant.

I heard an AWD chassis is in the talks as well. Anybody hear about this, or will it be another RWD?

You realize the next coupe will be a pricey luxo-boat. I was actually looking around online...should my coupe get hit or something. There is nothing I can find that I like. I like Miata's, but I am betting one would be painful to get in and out of. That is based on my age. The last time I was in a Carrera it was painfully low to the ground. The owner was my same age and he said a Porsche was worth it. Not in my view. Comfort is important to me...as is driving in a very immature manner. Not much out there in the 30k range. I will be keeping the Gen Coupe quite awhile longer, I guess. Runs great and I am getting on four years without payments. Even my wife is bugging me about what I am going to buy next. Honestly, after going back to RWD I will not buy a FWD car ever again. AWD maybe.

^^ What are you, 90?? Just kidding...I'm 45, and I find the GC a little hard to get out of. I noticed it got worse when I lowered it 1 inch for Autocross.

I don't really mind it being hard to get out of, though...just the price I pay for a cool car, I suppose.

LOL! I'm with ya buddy. I consider getting in and out of my GC part of my workout program Kind of like justifying my golf membership: I walk 18 while carrying a full bag over my shoulder. The course has a number of elevation changes, and it's a 5.5 mile walk

There was some talk a while back about Kia taking the reigns on the entry level tossable sports car and letting Hyundai play with the big fish. It may be a long shot and its unconfirmed but the GT4 concept gave that impression.

The GT4 Stinger concept has four doors now. I saw some pictures online at some recent auto show. It is supposed to be 3 series fighter with a price to match. Seriously, if that Stinger coupe above were released as RWD with about 300 HP I would buy one. Kia seems to be going after BMW too. That just is not going to happen. A bimmer buyer does not buy Korean. The luxury market has some pretty nice mark-ups. I don't think the Koreans are going to be able to compete that space too easily.

Here is what I saw (Not GT4, but Stinger):

I saw that one too! My problem is that I got over having a 4 door, fast grocery getter with my previous 2006 Altima 3.5SE and manual trans. Fast and fun, but not as fast, and not as fun as my 2012 3.8 Track! I turned 71 last year so my fast driving days may come to a halt...maybe when I'm 86? LOL!
BTW, I'm so over anything FWD too! RWD or AWD is the way to go!

oh, and the most interesting rumours i hear in the 2017-19 time frame involve the Alfa Giulia drive train going under a Dodge Barracuda or Quadrifoglio Coupe.
its v6 might be half of a Ferrari 12... pure speculation on my part.

If you would like a website dedicated to Hyundai automotive sales and future reveals of cars, check this website out: Home - The Korean Car Blog

I found a lot of useful information especially for the new Genesis that is in the works. If you'd like a little more information than that, I can suggest this website for you: team Testdrive Do keep in mind this website is in Korean, so do translate it if you can't read Korean, I know I can't! These websites do a good job relaying a lot of useful information about our cars and first looks!

Happy reading!

No V8 no care. I'm over laggy powerplants with peaky response. This platform has killed what I used to love about turbo cars.

Last thing id want after spending that type of money on a Hyundai is more of a bottled-up hard-to-crack ECU that prohibits good aftermarket from unlocking its potential, much like we have now with our ECU's.

If rumors are true, expect the next-gen Gen Coupe to be $45k+ and probably up to $55k well optioned. Thats GT350 or C7 territory to me, which would be twice the car any Hyundai coupe could ever dream of being.
