Dealer transfered old plates instead of New Car registration

So I get a post card from my dealer stating my registration was ready to be picked up, and found it odd why no plates were available. It turns out they transferred my old plates to the new car with the DMV.

I'm pretty pissed they didn't tell me they were going to transfer, do I have any recourse at this point? It's quite obvious they did this to save money since I negotiated an OTD price on the vehicle, but I just assumed they would have done a new car registration.

This is in NJ. My salesperson said he was going to check, but hasn't gotten back to me yet. Any suggestions on how to proceed at this point?

Garage

I've had this happen also, but in my case the dealership sent me a check for the difference between there standard overcharged new registration fee and the cost to transfer. But this was in Florida.

Check your paper work,it WILL be itemized somewhere. If they list the price that is for registration transferring the plates, then your SOL. Its what you agreed to. If they list the cost for the plates, then they owe you some money.

The invoice said $135 for title fees. In NJ, I believe new car tags would be $59/yr, so they either owe me money, or i can pay balance for the 4 year reg.

Going to head there tomorrow, hope they can work something out, but something tells me I'm screwed...

Many states have laws about that. In other words, you can jack up the price elsewhere, but in many states its illegal to overcharge you for taxes and or state fees. This is different than the "documentation fee" they try to stick you with, which by the way is also often limited by state laws.

Nope, You're not getting any money back. Registration for 1 year is $59. You have gotten a 4 year (new car) registration. It definitely was a transfer.

Sorry bud and congrats on the new gen!

Edit: I spoke out of turn. The 4 year is $211. But I do believe that there is a charge to transfer the plates. $150 does sound right for a transfer and 1 year registration. The best way to get to the bottom of this is to call other dealerships (don't have to be hyundai) and explain your situation and ask what they would do. Most salesman these days are pretty bored during the day and more than willing to screw over another dealer.

Well I went to the dealer today and supposedly once it's registered with the DMV, they can no longer change it. I basically got screwed out of $180 because they did the trnaser instead of the 4 year registration. I even owed $26, but luckily I spoke to my sales guy and he paid the balance.

Guess I can call another dealer tomorrow and see if there are any options, but since I already picked up the registration card, not sure if I can do anything now.

On the plus side, my sales guy is ordering for me the genesis wing emblems so I guess this can kind of offset how their finance guy screwed me over...

No not really, you paid so everything is suppose to be in your name, but dealers will find anyway to cut corners.
