2013 iPod and/or phone pairing problems?

I just bought my new 2013 Grand Touring in Parabolica Blue last night. Everything's great, except for some electronics annoyances:

At the dealership, the salesman was trying to get my cell phone paired, but it wasn't working (the "Add phone" button on the Hyundai screen was greyed out for no apparent reason.) He and a technician thought it might be a fuse issue, and said they'd look into it and hopefully have a fix when I come back in later this week.

But then when I arrived home from the dealership, I figured what the heck, and gave it another try... and the pairing worked fine! I don't think I did anything differently from before.

But there's another problem - my iPod only plays static when connected either through the Hyundai iPod cable or through my old standard Aux cable.

Any ideas what the problem might be here? I'm hoping this isn't a sign of horrible 1970s-British-Leyland-style electric problems to come....

Ebrake has to be engaged to pair devices. As far as static on with the ipod cable, not really sure, I use the cable with my iphone, and it works fine, although sometimes it fails to connect if my phone isnt "unlocked" before I plug it in.

Aha, I bet the ebrake was the problem! I now remember reading about that somewhere on this forum - that's a new "feature" for 2013, isn't it?

Doing a search of the forum archives, I found one thread where someone said they had a similar problem with the iPod, and fixed it by resetting it in iTunes. Which I'm not sure makes much sense, but I suppose it couldn't hurt to try....

About the iPod, I noticed the manual seems to say only obsolete iPod Nanos are supported (1st through 4th generation). Mine is a 5g, does that mean it won't work?

I had the iPod problem with my old iPod in 2006, same issue, static out of the Aux and static out of the iPod connector to my pioneer HU in my Acura... long story short, it wasn't the HU or the aux cable, it was the iPod and now it makes for an "expensive" external hard drive. Hope yours doesn't suffer the same fate.

Did the iPod work otherwise? Mine works fine for every purpose except plugging it in to the Genesis Coupe.

A bit more testing makes me think it's probably something wrong in the car itself, as I found my older iPod and tested it, with the same result.

The sound it makes is mostly garbage/static, but you can kind of make out the beat of an individual song, so something's getting through.

Have you tried using your phone or flash drive or something else through the aux ports? I just got my coupe and haven't messed much with the in dash unit, but it could be that the connection between those ports in the armrest and the head unit are loose or barely connected if you're hearing very faint beats, but a lot of static.

Mine started out not working just in the car, but eventually it stopped outputting music at all and just emitted static through the headphones jack or when hooked up, but this was straight static, no sign of music anywhere. Sounds different, yours could be an aux port grounding issue, that can cause severe static.

The iPod issue turned out to be extremely simple - a loose connection. Not even bad wiring or a short or something - just something that wasn't plugged in all the way. So all is well now.

What connection was it that was loose? I actually just went out to test mine today and it did the exact same thing as you described. If I completely cranked the volume I could barely hear the beat. The in-dash displays song and everything fine.

I didn't see the repair myself, so I'm not certain. I think it was the connection closest to the input jacks. It definitely didn't take long to fix - just a little more time than it took for me to drink a cup of coffee and eat a little vending-machine packet of cookies in the service department waiting room. All the "ruling out problems with the cable/iPod" stuff probably took longer.

Curiously, I never got any in-dash displays to work properly until it was fixed.

If you're only getting a really faint signal when you crank the volume (signal gain), that may not be your mp3 player that you're hearing. The aux input on my aftermarket kenwood head unit always needs to be set much higher than the volume for radio, so when there's no signal coming from my ipod the cable actually picks up spanish a AM station.
