I would actually not recommend doing that, unless you know how to cut plexi. It splinters/shatters very easily. You need mad dremel skills if you want to do that by hand. When I was into car audio stuff a lifetime ago, I could never get plexi cut right without damaging it, and I am a dremel ninja. I highly recommend taking it to a shop with the equipment necessary to do the job properly the first time. If you have no plexi cutting experience, you will go through many , many sheets of plexi before you get it right.

I already have with my uNavi and I had no problem but I will probably buy a right angle ground loop isolator cable for this just in case.
I have not tried any GPS app on my N7 yet, how are you guys checking the satellites locking or not? Is it within the GPS app itself?

Finally, to the OP: have you decided to stick with the duracell inverter as that is working best?

Yes for me, the duracell inverter has worked the best. My nexus battery has not died since I installed it. Nothing seems to charge the N7 faster than the combination of 4G+GPS will drain it though.

interesting update for you all experiencing battery problems.

me and my friend bought 90degree usb cables from ebay. we had nothing but issues where it says it charging but the % never goes up. i then tried the original usb cable that the nexus 7 came with and BAM! 100% never gone down. interesting how a thin usb cable can do that compared to the chick oem cable

lower "gauge"? maybe it can't transfer the juice at max efficiency?

Replacing my (2 years old) Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus Type-B install this weekend with a N7 install.

Most of the issues/complications/etc I'm seeing here are trying to "hack around" to make it happy with a fixed install. Better : just install a ROM INTENDED for Fixed Installs.

USB ROM for Nexus 7

Also installing with a 12V industrial powered USB Hub, "Fast Charging" enabled, automatic Cell phone data USB tether/charge (when I plug my cellphone into the USB hub), external small USB HD (mounted Read Only so no accidental USB disconnect = data corruption worries) with ALL of my music on it (well over 100GB), and external USB DAC Sound card (which is loads better sound quality than what comes out of the N7 headphone jack, Turtle Beach Micro II, $25ish).

Already have the ELM327 from the current tablet install, and if I run into GPS issues I'll just use the 10Hz external bluetooth GPS (that I already have for datalogging while autocrossing...this tablet will also be used for that using custom software called SoloStorm intended for datalogging while racing) mounted under the dash and USB powered.

Good info, albeit in some horrific runon sentences! :P

Seriously though, love the rom! Put up some pics when you are done.

Have you found a backup camera solution with that setup yet?

Did you end up keeping the POWERGEN charger or replace it with something else?? I personally recommend getting a power inverter from autozone or walmart and plug in the nexus charger itself. This way, you won't need the ground loop and you won't hear that whining noise. But anyways lol. nice write up, very detailed

In Theory you can use any USB video capture card that this ROM would recognize and then just pipe in the backup camera of your choice to it. It is "on the list" (and I already have a backup camera to try with it), but honestly not very high on the list.

No, I got rid of the POWERGEN charger, the Duracell mini inverter has been working the best for me so far

I relocated it to the side of the base of the shifter ( below the plastic panel and shift boot ). The duracell inverter is plugged into it, and it's laying to the left side of the bottom of the shifter, zip tied into place. You have to use the cigarette lighter to power the tablet, so it can't be mounted anywhere in the cabin. No pictures are really necessary here. There's nothing to really show lol.

It should work just fine with a 2013 model. I might upgrade mine to a 2013 model next year, in hopes of improved battery life while using cellular data lol.
