OK. It was my original plan to wait until I got all my equipment together before I tore into the car.
Well, I have a popping noise (sometimes sounds like a socket rolling around in the spare tire well too) in the back of the car. I took the back apart to look for anything that shouldn't be there. I didn't find anything, but since I had it apart I figured I might as well do some of the work now. So, here's where I'm at... I drilled a hole into the kick panel above the sunroof drain to bring in my 1/0 Knukonceptz wire. It enters through a Streetwires compression grommet, sealed with Silicone. ![]() That's from the outside, behind the splash guard. Here's where the wire comes in: ![]() And here's where it goes into the fenderwell. ![]() I made a mount out of ABS plastic (for now, plan to redo it in aluminum later) to hold my Knukonceptz fuse holder. ![]() ![]() All of my wire terminations are soldered, and the wires are wrapped in Techflex with heat shrink tubing on the ends. |

Since I plan to keep the factory radio, I ran a wire to be used as Accessory and a reference ground wire. Those are covered in red Techflex, and run back, and I also ran 2 runs of 12ga Dayton speaker wire. I used my label maker to label the wires, and (again) everything is in Techflex, heat shrunk and labeled...with clear heat shrink over the labels.
![]() ![]() These wire runs will be terminated with Deans connectors (speaker wires in the kicks, Acc/ground behind radio) The Power run is unmarked, but will be at the distribution block. After bringing the wires in, the bundle is ziptied every 4 inches (or less in some spots)all the way to the back... ![]() When I got to the area under the rear seat, I used some pieces I got from Parts Express. I'm not sure what they're called, but they are sticky backed tie down mounts. They stick to the floor and have holes for zipties. This allowed be to snake the wires around under the seat and out of harms way. ![]() Now, I will be removing the factory amp, and use that spot for my Audison BitOne.1 processor. For the inputs to the processor, I inserted a couple of Male/Female GM harnesses inline with the inputs to the factory amp. This allows me to keep the factory setup operational, and then when I go to install the BitOne I unplug the male side of the harness and insert another which will go directly to the BitOne. I put a factory style clip on the back of the female connectory and drilled a hole to hold the assembly in place. Connections soldered and heat shrunk...no techflex tho. I taped the harness up to look factory. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I also got a KILLER deal on some Hushmat, so I bought 4 kits to go along with the 1 I already had. I'll need a couple more, tho.
I pulled the factory sub, and covered the rear deck in Hushmat. Sorry, no pics, it was HOT in the car and I was in a hurry. Picture the rear deck black and you'll get a good idea what it looks like I also did the rear fender wells, inside of the rear quarters, the back side of the inner quarter panels (the silverish part that bolts in) and the area under the seat. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And I figured out where my ground is going. I bolted it down near right in front of the foam in the trunk, through a factory threaded hole in the floor. It's not currently permanent, I need to clean the paint off it and make sure everything fits first. Not worried tho. ![]() ![]() Anyway, that's where I'm at now. I also have some 1.5" King Starboard (think REALLY thick cutting board) to make my speaker adapters for the doors, which are going to be Pioneer TS-C720PRS components. I plan to run somwhere between 100 and 150 watts to each speaker, actively. (Each speaker has it's own dedicated amp channel and no passive crossovers) I haven't picked my amps yet, but I've got it narrowed down. I am building it sort of modular, so if I decide to change equipment later, I don't have to start ALL over. Jay |

Very nice work as always.
You gonna run JL HD to go along with the big bucks bit.1? lol, I like what you did with the harness, that is very slick and I think I'll be stealing that idea when I upgrade to the bit.1. I just don't have the give a damn to tear into it right now... it works and sounds decent enough to leave it alone for the rest of the summer. |

I even thought about a 1000/1 and a 450/4, but they a) take up too much room, and b) the 1000/1 is a current hog. In other words, I'm still looking... Jay |

I agree, you can do better than the Pio PRS... mine is doing some things that I'm really not liking and I'm not sure if it's the amp or if I buggered something up.
Kenwood excelons maybe? I'm pretty pleased with my PDX, but I think you've used them before if I remember correctly... What sort of problems are cropping up with the HDs? |

Well, we haven't sold a ton of them, so we might be on the initial batch, and I'm hoping that any problems we are seeing now are solved for the next batch we get...
The first one installed at our company, caught fire and totalled a customer's car. Then JL said we needed to add fuse holders before the amps. OK, technically, we should be doing that anyway, but it didn't even try to pop the fuse at the battery. We recently did a system for a one of our "street pharmacist's" 85 Cutlass 4 door. We did a single 750/1 HD on 2 12W6's, and it was pretty loud. We beat on it for a couple of days on and off before he came to pick it up, and wouldn't you know it...the amp took a **** right when he came to pick it up! We replaced it and added a fuse (per JL) and he had some problems about a month later, and when I went to check it out, the power plug had melted. Fuse did not blow. Since then things had been fine....then he came back and we swapped his 2 12w6's for 2 12w7's and added another 750/1...worked fine until the customer had his alternator swapped. Turns out that the guy who put the alternator in popped the fuse at the back battery, so it wasn't charging. We replaced the fuse and all was good. We pretty regularly get the first batch of things from JL, and I assume this is what happened. I also hope they have fixed these problems, and things will be fine with subsequent batches. But until I see it first hand, I don't want to put them in my car. I'm starting to consider ARC mini's. I'm not a big Kenwood fan, and while I've found the full range PDX amps to sound ok, the sub amps leave me wanting. Jay |

Wow, hopefully JL gets that taken care of quickly, they're normally pretty good about not putting out crappy products (in my limited experience) but dang.
Hope you can find an amp that will work for you, the full range class Ds are getting better and more common. I just saw the Eclipse ones and damn, they look a LOT better in person than they do in pics. |

Honestly, I've seen and heard a LOT of Audison and haven't been impressed., for the high cost the performance just does not seem to be there. I've heard lots of people say the PDX amps sound like they lack balls, but to me, Audison (yup, even the vaunted 5.1k) sound like the audio equivalent of a eunuch.
Add in the fact that most of the LRx amps are freakin huge and it just ain't cool, IMO. |

I finally got the back of my car back of my car back together this past Saturday.
I spent about 3 hours, Hushmatting the back side of the quarter panels, and the plastic panels around the opening behind the back seat, ran my driver's side speaker wires and my ground. I had to reroute a few wires, because I found the were right in the way of where parts of the quarter panel comes down. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Well, that's it for now. Not much of an update, but getting there... My GF was back in town last weekend so didn't get much time on the car. Next part will be the mounting piece for the BitOne.1 and running the cables for it (for the display and the USB -- in Techflex) Jay |

If I were going to run Rockford amps, they'd be DSM iX's.
I had a couple of Punch 100 DSM iX's one was bridged to an 8w6 and the other was running 6" components, 4x10's, tweets and 4's at something like 1.3 ohms a channel... I'm not a fan of their newer stuff. And we're not a RF dealer. Jay |
