Default car computer via raspberry pi?

Anyone know the specs of the power output for the USB in our cars? I was thinking a little raspberry pi in the dash with a small touchscreen would be a super cheap and easy solution to gps and video in our cars?

Raspberry Pi | An ARM GNU/Linux box for $25. Take a byte! if you havent heard of the thing..$25/$35 for a stand alone computer that can run 1080P..good stuff right?

So we have audio in, USB power, and a nice place for a small monitor in our dash already..just begging for this type of project. Would make it a lot easier if the power didnt have to be a consideration - but lots of ways around that as well.

Anyway..good/bad idea? Anyone had their dash all torn up and see any issues with shoehorning a tiny little computer in there?

I don't think it would be a big issue...the only thing that always stops me from taking on a project like this is getting the information from the head unit which the uNAVI fixes.

yeah the uNavi is really cool but damn if it isnt expensive. Was thinking this would be a cheap/interesting media and gps option for a few hundred bucks.

the thing that the unavi does the give a reason in getting it, is because it actually ties into the stock stereo, so don't need to keep the blue screen.

The thing is you need for some someone that can take the signal that's suppose to go to the blue screen, and get it physically to the Pi unit via USB, and then on the software side someone to translate that and yes you are good to go.

Personally what I would like to see is someone take this on and put say Android on it. I would be very interested then.

Going to get one just to play with..lots of good media stuff happening with them already I'm certain there are going to be some great car related OS builds as well. Was thinking I would use it along with a relocation kit for the blue screen so they would be independent...getting it all to play together nice is a little outside of my skill set..heh

How do I buy these? They're not listed on their site.

For the price point I wouldn't mind buying one and messing with it. I'm not a big programmer but I'd definitely play around with it.

I forgot about this!

Doesn't uNavi have an aux input? I should really just buy one, I have been putting it off since it's release
