Hi, I'm new to car audio system. I'm planning on buying a new set of 2 channel amp + a 10" subwoofer. But I'm not sure how I have to place the subwoofer. I will build a custom enclosure like the zen enclosure and what do you guys think which one produces more power a subwoofer pointing towards the rear bumper or a sub pointed towards YOU with the backseat flipped all the way down ?

I say sub facing the bumper if you are not going to seal off the trunk.

if you do not know a lot, do not worry about sealing off the trunk. here is an example of a system that has been sealed off.
here are some examples...its pretty self explanatory ![]() but for your case, play around with the sub (if it is easy to move around) and see what you like best. every box is different and you will see different peaks and with different positions. |

for the love of god, I hope you are planning to/did fiberglass that mess of duct tape. and by the way, you do know that if you want to custom mold fiberglass and not get it on your carpet you can just use aluminum foil with painters tape over the seams right? hell of a lot cheaper than all that duct tape.

Ported boxes will be louder but have a much looser (boomy) response than a sealed box. The port allows the sound waves inside the box to escape, so you get a fuller sound, but it's not as tight. If you're upgrading the whole system, I think a sealed small CID box always sounds best, because your mid and high components will fill out the sound rather than trying to extend the sub frequency response to fill out the sound. Also, if your amp has high and low pass filters, definitely set a high cut of 120 hertz max, and I would roll off below 40hz because there's not much down there besides mud. this will give you a good overview of what different components do and some different box ideas. HowStuffWorks "How Speakers Work" One thing that you always want to look at is frequency response and sensitivity. All speakers are not created equal, and if you learn how to read the graph, you can pick a good set of speakers that you like regardless of price. Expensive is not always better, and cheap is not always bad. Welcome to BuyingLoudspeakers - Speaker Specifications this is a little more technical, and has good information about speaker choice. Always remember that the human ear is not "flat". It hears high frequencies (high pitched) significantly more accurately than low frequencies and hears high dB sounds (loud) significantly more accurately than low dB sounds. makes sure to remember that a subwoofer's polar response graph is going to be the "vertical" response graph if you have it facing horizontal to the ground, it will be the "horizontal graph" if you have it facing perpendicular to the ground (draw a line up through the center of the speaker from back to front, that's the vertical direction, i.e. the direction that the cone is facing, regardless of how it's mounted) frequency response indicates how loud the speaker will sound at a given frequency with a steady state of input, polar response indicates how the ouput varies depending on where you are located in relation to the speaker. This is all much more practical for mid and high range applications than subwoofers, but good info to have any time you are looking into replacing speakers.

Facing the rear. The sound waves will be longer.
Simply put, it sounds better (in my opinion). I played with it several ways in my Accord and the absolute best hands-down was facing the back of the car.

I know from past experience that it really does not make a difference. Build a horn amp and you will neveR go back, do a google search. The sound the thing puts out is insane. The last car I had one in I had to make the back window plastic because the glad one moved wayyy To much
