hey all,
my shifter plastic piece on my 2013 gen coupe manual recently broke (i think). Now everytime i shift down the thing keeps popping off. Doesnt look like anything broke off? Anyone else having this issue? [Solved] Instead of taking the car to the dealer, I ended fixing the problem. Its really simply and I even made a DIY.. Im conviced the screw that held everything together fell loose from engine rattle over time (2 weeks for me). First, remove the pleather boot by gently pressing all sides of and lifting up. The boot is held by two plastic clips on each side. If that doesn't work, try working on a side, pressing and lifting each side up. ![]() ![]() Heres a better look at the clips.. ![]() Next, remove the shifter by rotating counter clockwise. Before actually removing the shifter knob from the shifter, please read next step! ![]() The reason I had this problem is the screw came loose. Therefore the screw will fall out of the plastic cylinder and in your console if not careful. I placed a towel inside my console so that if the screw fell out, I dont have to go digging around for it.. ![]() Here is the screw in question. It seems it was previously loctited, however it still came loose. ![]() The screw will eventually go through the threaded hole here.. PLace 2-3 drops of loctite in the hole and place the piece back on the knob ![]() The next step is to just simply place the screw back in the bottom of the boot and tighten using a phillips screwdriver. [ ![]() Then install in reverse order.. Hope this helps anyone that needs it this was initially a huge annoyance for me.. Last edited by y4ck0; 06-14-2012 at 03:15 AM. Reason: [Solved] |

If you pull the boot down off the shifter and unscrew the knob, there should be a screw inside the knob you can tighten back on that plastic part...The same thing happend on my Forte Koup and I was like,

Mine is doing the same thing. If I don't grab the lower metal piece, the plastic piece comes off with very little effort. It happened to my wife the first time, and she does drive like granny. I am taking it back to the dealer next week, hopefully they will fix it easy enough.

I've had the same thing happen to mine. Moddiction is sending me the fix I need for that issue.
I have to say, I like the pics of removing the shift boot, since I'll need to do that when I get my short throw shifter in. It's a simple procedure, but one I'll know how to avoid jacking up now that I've seen how it's put together. |

I have posted about shifter problems in other threads - and never could get the rattle to go away... I'm originally from Canada and grew up playing hockey and finally got so sick of the rattle that I went and purchased red hockey tape and did my shifter up like it was the butt end of a hockey stick and you know what?
I ****ing love it despite how welfare it looks. The extra weight feels great and real sports tape has a good feel to it. Hell, I should market it. "HOCKEY KNOB" - "WHEN SHIFTING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN LOOKING COOL... Well.. Such as it is." ;-) BUT... bottom line - the shifter that comes with my Rspec was low quality and shaped like a bent banana dick. TT0ne PS: To the original poster - thanks for the great pics - I've made sure to bookmark this threat since you know at some point - it will need to be referred to! :-) |

Heres a better look at the clips..
![]() If you don't mind sharing what you used to get inside the crevice to press all the sides and snap out the clips? Or did you just shove your finger between and pull inwards until it snapped out. |

honestly i just used my hands. i squeezed all sides slightly then lifted up. the square is plastic so it does give. but be sure not to squeeze to hard.
if that doesnt work for you, try doing one side at a time. |

I cant seem to get the boot off... I might just be scared of breaking something.
EDIT: OK managed to get the boot off by flicking the clips off as if the leather wasn't there. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DROP THE SCREW WHEN YOU TAKE THE KNOB OFF. I had to fish for it and I didn't have a flash light handy but I managed to get it. Screwed the plastic park on and gave the knob a full revolution more then it was set to previously and now it doesn't move and the top is securely placed. Easy fix no need for warranty work.

Its not broken, they jus didnt include the screw that tightens the top piece on. Unclip the boot from the knob, unscrew the shift knob and get a little screw that fits inside threaded hole of the piece that fell off. Screw it to the shift knob, and screw the whole thing back on the shifter.
OR go to the dealer, but that might take a while. |

Yesterday I fixed my rattle and the top piece from seperating by simply unscrewing the shift knob. I did not have to remove the boot at all, and the screw was completely off of mine, so I put on some loctite and screwed it back in. Like magic, the rattle is gone! And it took 3 minutes 14 seconds to complete.
