Talking Motorsports in Olympics???

I dunno why, but I've been thinking it would be awesome to add at least one discipline of motosport in the Olympics (with standardized cars, of course)... so I Googled to see if I was only crazy enough to think of something like that, but I guess there are at least a few others who think so...
Ambitious but rubbish? You tell me...

EDIT: Oh whoops, this should have gone in the Off-topic section... can a mod move it???

I've gotta say no, as much as I love motorsports, the olympics is about physical sports. There is too much of the car that is important to motor sports, where other sports really are about the person alone.

Besides, there are enough motorsports as it is....

haha yeah i guess... but as one of the article says...

Physical prowess is not crucial for motorsports, but neither is it for shooting or archery. Then of course there is the technological argument - that motorsports is a function of technology more than anything else - but this too does not withstand comparison. Look at any modern air rifle, and you will see a level of technological sophistication on par with most major motorsports series. Look at the technology that goes into such things as skis, or running shoes, or a tennis racket, or the design of a soccer ball. All these sports owe their current status to technological advances as much as to the athletes who are able to exploit the technology.

but yeah lol i guess we have A1GP...

The problem with the comparison is that those other sports require someone who is at the top physically for the Olympic level competition. You can give someone the most advanced pair of skiis and they will still suck unless they have spent their live dedicated to physical fitness in order to make it to the Olympics. Whereas, drivers can ignore their bodies and focus on driving skill. Even a fat person can be an amazing driver.

Racing is more mental the physical. So for that sake, chess should be an olympic event. The best racers all know their cars inside and out. Take them out of their cars and put them in a "standardized" vehicle to level the competition... it would be the equivilent of take a major league pitcher and moving him to 3rd base for a game.

I think it does have a sot at the games. Look at X-games and Race of Champions. Basically spec cars and yes have a competition of driver skill and mental ability. X-games had no problem bringing motorsports into it, and this year BMX made the Olympics this year. It seems like a natural movement, otherwise peak condition athletes of Softball wouldn't have been dropped for next Olympics. Bring it on: Hamilton VS Pastrana!

Motorsports fits with the X Games because of the X. The X Games are as much about culture and coolness as they are about physical ability.

I'm not saying there is no physical ability in motorsports, that's just not what motorsports is about...

As cool as it would be, I just don't think it will happen, I've been waiting for paintball to be made an olympic sport for a LONG time...

Well, maybe not shooting. Doesn't take a whole lot of physical fitness for that one.

But, I'm not sure about motorsports in the olympics. I mean, what if they used NASCAR?? It's bad enough that they have friggin trampolines. If I turned on the olympics in four years and saw Jeff Gordon or whoever on a podium, I'd probably never watch another one. Just what we need is a bunch of rednecks throwing Busch cans all over a foreign country.
