Did you resleeve all of the wires individually? It looks super nice but goddamn that looks like a lot of work. I just picked up a Phenom II X6 1100T ($170), Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 ($110), and 16GB Kingston Hyper X DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 with cooler ($70). Gonna cool the chip with the Corsair A70 ($30), that thing is a beast.

My buddy's trying to get his FX 8150 over 5.0 on a CoolIt Eco by disabling half the cores and cranking the voltage for single-threaded performance. He's also running 3x Sapphire 6950's unlocked and overclocked. Trying to get 120+ fps in BF3 is not cheap. Also, I don't understand all the AMD hate. Intel has always had the better performance, but it all costs so much. I'd love an i5 2500K but I'm not paying $300 for a decent mobo.

Re: Cables. I just used a couple of ModRight cable extensions from Frozen CPU (1 white 24-pin and 2 blue PCI-E extension cables), and a Molex puller to swap the cables out to get the look I wanted.

As for Intel being expensive, you don't have to spend anywhere near that much to get a good mobo. There's lots of great boards in the $150-200 range - MSI GD-65+, ASRock Extreme4+, Gigabyte's UD3+ and ASUS has the Pro/EVO and Gene-Z boards available. Intel will be a bit pricier, but it doesn't have to be that much more.

I'd like to see that, from my understanding the game is locked to 60fps.

If you get anywhere north of STABLE 40fps in that game, you won't notice the higher fps...

Also I paid 170$ for my Gigabyte z68x-ud4-B3, dual pci-e and all.

I disagree. Do you have vsync on? Going from 40fps to over 60 makes a big difference with vsync off, at least to me. Beyond that and the difference is minimal except that you get some additional smoothness but it comes with tearing.

@ 1920x1080 (monitors max) I get ~70 fps on ultra settings, with AA, AF, and ambient occlusion maxed. In the 90s when set to Auto which is mixed ultra and high with lower AA/AF settings. I can post some screen shots when I get home from work if you like. If you're online, you can be in them, lol

But in eyefinity @ 6048x1080 I need to drop the settings to mediums and lows with no ambient occlusion to get over 60fps. Game still looks really good and I don't even notice the reduction in graphics while playing.

Smoothness is everything.

I do agree that 120+ fps is a waste of time and money. The goal should be 60fps+ with max settings.

Maybe I forgot to mention he ha a 120hz monitor, which is his reasoning behind trying to hit 120+ fps.

That makes more sense but its still alot of money spent on gfx to get only slightly noticeable improvement. Damn, why does PC gaming have to be so expensive.

I never turn V-sync off, I hate screen tearing.

My Asus VE278 is a 60hz monitor, so again unlocking V-sync to have more than 60fps wouldn't yield any noticeable gains(for me that is), since I don't really see the difference even when the FPS fluctuate from 40 to 60.

I'm pretty sure these quotes are all out of order, lol..

120hz helps because the monitor doesn't need to overdrive, possibly inducing ghosting, and smooths the picture out. 120+ fps wouldn't be bad, but there still isn't a huge noticeable difference when you go over 60. Maybe a bit, but not like when you go from 30 to 60.

If you aren't hitting 60+fps and you're running VSync, you run the risk of Vsync limiting your framerate to 30fps, so you actually negate performance. I run 100+fps in several games, but I've turned Vsync on in all of them to reduce tearing as well as coil whine.

For the money you're looking to spend for TN garbage, you're better off getting an Asus ProArt 24". Matte screen like you want (professional graphics editors can't stand glossy either). P-IPS panel. Accurate color reproduction with actual viewing angles. 16:10.
TN panels aren't the greatest when it comes to picture quality, I know that. I bought a expensive Dell 2405FPW back in 05 or 06 and it's been pretty decent except for some contrast shift, a bit of lag, and a lot of noticeable ghosting in games. Now that there's decent IPS panels for cheap I looked into them, but since I do more gaming than photo editing that's my priority. I'd rather have a 120hz monitor which are all TN, have less input lag than VA and IPS panels, and the vast majority are 16:9. That Alienware is the only one I've come across that fits the bill and has a matte screen. I'd rather have 16:10, but if you've been keeping up with general trends in gaming the 16:9 aspect generally gets a better FOV in games. At least, the ones I play. See below example.

Not only that though, every current Blizz game. WoW and D3 included. Tried them all and was surprised as hell, but that's how it is. In the meantime, I can grab a Huey or a Spyder and calibrate my monitor to as close as I want to get it. That Asus is about 200 dollars over what I'm going to end up spending, too.. If I was going to drop 500+, I'd honestly probably get three less expensive TN panels, bezel mod them, and run eyefinity.

Now, if there was a backlit localized RGB LED IPS 120HZ monitor out there, I'd be all over it.

@ snoopy. Is it worth going for the 550 over the 400 series? And no, space is not an issue so I'm fine with going full tower. I haven't been home hardly at all to take pictures of the mess I'm using now, but I will I promise! With dxdiag for the system specs.

@ adamantine. I'm not a professional designer...so I don't have an issue with the possibility of slightly untrue color, and I don't plan on looking at my monitor from oblique angles while I'm gaming....so VN is fine for me. Fastest response times Did I mention cheap?

BKED, I'd highly suggest looking around for a couple of 6870s instead of the 550s. I've seen them as low as 130. Higher performance, much lower energy consumption.

I paid only 40 dollars more for my i5-2500K and P67 motherboard as you did for your cpu+mobo. You don't have to spend a ton to get enthusiast-level performance. I'm also thinking about going with 3x6950s, except I'd do Tri-Fire with my one 6950 and a 6990. We'll see, maybe when the cards are significantly cheaper.

Disabled my Xfi, went back to onboard. Been using headphones a lot more lately since night time is quiet baby time, so I've been using the front port, and there's no front jack connection on the Xfi xtrememusic.
Thinking about getting a Xonar DG. Also ready to ditch my Z5500 5.1 setup from Logitech. The more I come to appreciate audio, the more I am ready for some bookshelves and a t amp.

Any issues from the increased voltage?

I found a deal on tigerdirect for the 550 Ti fermi by....oh jeez...MSI i think for 74.99 each so I threw them on the xmas list and said buy two please, they're 50% off. Go...NAOW

Honestly, I had ATI once, hated it, and my POS HP pavilion has "the latest in mobile radeon and AMD mobile quad core processing....and it was stupid cheap...$700 for a 17" monitor laptop, so I bought it thinking I could throw down on some WoW on business trips...yeah...it runs WoW on "low", can't even run Minecraft without chop, and runs LoL on basic.

I know it's mobile...and mobile is garbage....but it just reinforces my dislike of ATI

PS FML full towers are expensive...

That's a great price, can't blame you. I got sick of nvidia after the heat kept creeping up, power usage kept creeping up, I had to RMA three 8800 series cards, and finally my 680i gave me issues all the time. I switched to the 69XX series and haven't looked back. They're both great companies, but I was just fed up and wanted to try something else. Got my 2GB 6950 for around 210, so that was a steal at the time.. Still isn't a bad price for one.

can we talk about how happy it makes me that tigerdirect bought Comp USA so now they're like, a legitimate computer store instead of a Best Buy without washing machines???? Same prices too. I can shop on TD and almost always run down to CUSA and get the same damned thing for the same price without having to wait. Love it.
