Default Colds meds

I've been taken my usually med of niquil and dayquil, which do nothing but make me sleepy.

3 days ago, I switched and started taking mucinex dm and airbourne.
mucinex did nothing but knock me out.
I've only taken 2 doses in 2 days and I've lost all sense of smell and taste. If it was temporary, I would be fine with it, but searching, others have had the same problem for months and only regaining like 75% of the senses back.

And for those that think that its because of a stuffed up nose. I've tested by taking a coffe bean and smelling it.... nothing, then eating it... nothing still.
It's the strangest sensation.

Only thing I can barely taste, are things that are sour. Just the sensation really, and not any flavor.

All this after only 2 doses.

I'm currently suffering from my yearly cold. I try not to take anything. If I do it is only some analgesic pain killer for a sore throat or antihistamine for congestion but only for three days. None of them all purpose cold medicines.

I have a couple of friends who work in hospitals and they swear by ColdFX. It's a little pricey, but apparently the most effective cold medicine out there.

Two things I do when I get a cold that usually knocks it out really quick.
Take a 3% dilution of hydrogen peroxide. Some use this for gargling which is a good idea for colds. But this time pour some in a little bowl. Take a few q-tips and lay your head on its side. Then dip the q-tip in the peroxide then in your ear. Get a lot of perpxide in there. You'll hear a crackling if you've used enough. Then hold your head there for about 5 minutes or until the crackling stops. Repeat on the other side.

The second trick is to overload on vitamin c and d. Vitamin c take it until you poop your pants. So no joke up to 50 grams a day until you lose bowel control...
For Vit D I'd say up to about 20,000ius a day for only 1-2 days.
Toxicity occurs at 40k per day

airbourne is something like 1,600% daily value of vitamin c per tablet. Suppose to take it at 3~4 hour intervals. Its just a supplament

Yea and the daily rec dosage is super super low. There is no such thing as vitamin c toxicity. The only thing that goes wrong is you poop fast if you take too much. **** like airborne is a huge waste of money because it's just simple stuff packaged fancy.

Think I'd prefer the cold. LOL! I find the Cold-eeze lozenges work at the very first sign of a cold.

Thera flu tea is super good. Next morning I felt great. It does have a strong taste which you can usually get over by adding some honey to the tea.

It got me over my cold in like 3days.

Side note. Humans are the only animal (classification) that can't produce their own vitamin c

I agree with the vitamin C overload. The last time I had a cold, I drank almost a gallon of orange juice in a day n a half and I was over my cold by day 3.

I usually only take Dayquil or Nyquil and an antihistamine like Claritin and maybe some extra Vit. C. I rarely get colds even working in a nursing home though. The trick is to wash your hands after coming into contact with sick people, get enough rest, exercise and take Vit. C and D year round. For the OP, I never heard of losing some sense of smell or taste from what you took, but have heard rumors that Zicam can cause it in some people. I tried it before I heard the rumors and it did'nt seem to affect me, but it did'nt really seem to help the cold a great deal either. Maybe shorten in by a day or two at most.

Zicam had a class action lawsuit and zicam lost.

mucinex states that it can cause brain damage if taken more than recommended.
I only took half the dosage.

As of now, my sense of smell and taste is returning, but things smell/taste a bit off. I would say about 30% has returned.

your symptoms sound mostly due to the mucosa inflammation which causes a change in nerve patterns running to brain. (in simple terms) give it time, the only cure is a good immune system and time. Decongestants can help, saline nasal spray works well. I tell my patients to avoid antihistamines unless the symptoms are truly allergic in nature as they will not help and can prolong viral illnesses. The over the counter meds may help manage symptoms but are not curative. Studies using vit c and zink are inconclusive to say the least.
Hope you feel better soon!

mucinex cleared my congestion, but killed my taste, smell and just generally dulled my sense. I don't take multiple meds at the same time.

2 weeks later, I'm still getting my sense back. they are 50% back.

I haven't taken any other meds, since that episode.

Cold has been gone since the 6th.
