Default Formula 1... 2011 season is here

A lot of tension leading up to this season and the Autralian GP is this weekend. Thank goodness for DVR. F1 race times are always crazy.

Any fans here? F1 is finally gaining some attention in the States.

Will Red Bull and Seb Vettel do it again this year? I say yes! Webber?

Will Schumacher advance this year or get pushed aside?

With all the big changes this year, especially the tires, it's hard to tell until we see them all out together going for it.

Who here has been to a race?

Been to one race in Montreal and loved it. I recommend going for the weekend if anyone has the chance. Not just Montreal, anywhere in the world it might take you, guaranteed a great weekend, but you will need to spend some cash.

I was raised watching F1, and when I first started getting into it via my dad, having the German heritage and a new up and coming star - Michael Schumacher, I was hooked from Benetton through Ferrari. The race that absolutely captivated me was it was pouring rain out, and everyone pitted to get wet's on. Schumacher decided to stay out on his slicks, and he ended up lapping faster then guys with rain tires on!!

It was a freak down spray, and everyone had to scramble to get their dry's back on, and Schumacher went on and destroyed the field that race. As a kid, and even to this day the display of having full control of your car was incredible.

That doesn't go to say there weren't many incredible drivers. Senna for sure, but he raced probably a few years before I got into the sport, and by the time I got to watch him race, he was what Schumacher is today...

Today though, I just am not captivated. It's gotten boring. More so then when Schumacher was always on the podium. So many rules, and it's just gotten too complex. I wish it was more like the early years I remember where you had a guy strapped onto a rocket with 4 wheels pumping out close to 1,000 hp and weighing less then that in pounds drifting a multi million dollar car through corners without ABS, TCS and stability control. Now they want to get into turbo 4's...just losing more and more interest

ALL THAT SAID

Will I watch 2011? Of course I always do. Not as much as I did but Red Bull is the new force, and I think after being quiet for so many years, it is going to light a fire under the bigger teams I hope to see some more fun!

Well the reason they are putting rules on downsizing displacement and such is because F1 isn't just for show. It never has been.

Manufacturers pump untold millions for research and development into technologies that will sell their production vehicles, and what better laboratory than the F1 series to push the limits of efficiency, dynamics and safety?

They are talking smaller displacement with turbos to lower the ridiculous amount of fuel these cars consume, which is not reciprocated or desired in the real world by the consumer. What's remarkable though is even if the sheer numbers aren't similar to the late 80s/early 90s heyday of 1000hp death traps, they are quite similar... which is an attestation to automotive engineers and what they can crank out these days using smaller engines with improved aero, light-weight materials and fuel management.

As for the events, I live in Montreal. This city is already off the hook as is but F1 weekend is a little too ridiculous even for me. If you want to see a spectacle come to the Canadian Grand Prix... it's the most watched F1 event for a reason.

Well somewhat agree. It always has been a a center stage for R&D.

Heck they had 2.4L engines pumping 750 hp NATURALLY!! By 2006 though ( I had to look it up ) is when the rules started getting ridiculous, yet yes they were still able to pull the above figure from the engine which is impressive. They started banning teams from using new technology to evolve engines. This is what I was kinda pissed about and the continual move to allowing less of these kind of technologies. Just a fuel injector and spark plug.

Durability has been made a point now in F1 as well where I think you need to keep the same engine for x races and qualifying before allowing replacement.

Fact of the matter is, they always had a V8 or larger sized engine. That's what you see in your exotics. To think of a Ferrari with a V6 or I4...
that said rumors of VW joining with the new rule, might see a Hyundai rolling around the F1 circuit?

It's going to quite a toss up on what teams will be ontop this year with the new tire packages. Hope the new teams do better than last year now that they all will be on even keels.

Very sad that Kubica won't be racing this year, IMO a championship wasn't going to be too far off for him.

Shumi was embarrasing last year compared to his former self, running people off the road and blocking ect. ect.

This coming from a former fan.

Glad to see that we have some fans here. I know that people get frustrated with the rules and the politics but it's almost like watching a drama series instead of just a race.. Bernie is such a pampas jerk and it's clear that he doesn't like Americans. Our bombed US F1 team out of Charlotte didn't help.

I will say that there is a huge untapped market in the States for F1 that Bernie and his clones would be crazy to ignore. In fact he's in NY during the Aussie GP to listen to their proposal for having a race on Staten Island.

One thing that I hate is the new fueling rule (I'm assuming that it's remained for 2011) that only allows for fuel at the start of the race. This removes one layer of the actual race strategy and puts more of an emphasis on reengineering the cars for the changing weight over the entire race. I missed the re-fuels in 2010. I guess this does put more of an emphasis on the tire strategy though.

Getting past nascar isn't going to happen, as dumb as i think it is (no offense just my opinion) theres too much of a base and it's too different than F1

with that being said I fully support the pluckies at VMM

Looks like Vettel is going to be dominant again this year. He qualifies FASTER than last year with 10% less down force. unreal.

Vettel is nuts, but I think if he isn't in pole hes not as good. When he is, forget it you can basically give him first :P

NASCAR is experiencing a slow blue collar death.. There is enough interest in more sophisticated motorsports in the States that I think F1 will grow. Starting with the new track in TX which will be in the 2012 season.

Just finished watching qualifying.. Seb is crazy fast.. He didn’t even use his KERS on the last lap.

I don’t know how those guys do it with the adjustable wings, KERS and everything else to keep up with while at an avg speed of 140mph.

Seb smokes the pack for the Aussie GP.. 18+ seconds ahead of 2nd place, Hamilton. Awesome to see Petrov on the podium.

What’s the story with Renault? Owned by a German PEG now called Lotus Renault? Interesting. Evidently Renault is only supplying engines these days.

RedBull has got the complete package. Their core engineering team just signed new contracts as well.
