Hyundai to spend $35 million over the next two years
By : JOSÉ L. CARMONA

Edition: May 21, 2009 | Volume: 37 | No: 20

New Hyundai distributor Sojitz of Puerto Rico has aggressive plans to take the Korean brand from its current No. 9 position in the local auto market to the No. 3 position by 2011.
To achieve this ambitious goal, Sojitz, doing business locally as Hyundai of Puerto Rico, plans to invest $35 million over the next two years.

“Amid a negative environment, Hyundai arrives full of energy, keenly aware of what’s going on in the Puerto Rico market. The fact there’s a three-year-old recession facilitates our initial steps to set up our business on the island in a highly competitive market. This means we need to set up a highly competitive infrastructure as well to go along with our goal to become a top-three brand,” Sojitz of Puerto Rico President & CEO Víctor Quintero told CARIBBEAN BUSINESS.

Sojitz’s $35 million investment over the next two years includes the establishment of a new headquarters and parts distribution center. Currently, the company is looking at two possible sites in Cataño and Toa Baja. Due to the urgency to set up shop as soon as possible, Quintero noted the Cataño facility looks more feasible as it is practically ready for occupancy. “We’ll be announcing the site of our new headquarters in 30 days, and we should be moving in another 30 days following the announcement,” Quintero said.

Ricardo García, Sojitz of Puerto Rico vice president of sales & marketing, said the company will also be relying on Hyundai’s global strength as the world’s No. 5 auto manufacturer with a fast-growing product lineup.

García said Hyundai will be launching five new vehicles this year in Puerto Rico starting in August—the Genesis in sedan and coupe versions, the Elantra Touring, the Veracruz sport utility vehicle (SUV) and a redesigned Sonata sedan.

Next year, the Korean automaker will unveil locally the redesigned Tucson, along with the 2010 Santa Fe SUV and the entry-level Brio, for a total of eight models in Hyundai’s new product lineup, García added.

Along with the growing product lineup the firm intends to expand its dealership network, nearly doubling the number, from 11 to at least 20 dealers, Quintero pointed out.

“We are initially inviting local investors who are willing to make the necessary investments in which we will assist them financially to make these happen. We are also calling on nonlocal investors who are willing to come in and set up new facilities that meet the brand’s standards,” Quintero explained, adding Sojitz will place greater emphasis on improving customer satisfaction and service as a complement to the added facilities.

The new headquarters will add some 30 additional employees to the company’s existing 25, and the addition of 10 new dealerships will add another 160 new direct positions, Quintero indicated.

To improve brand awareness, Sojitz will be quadrupling the firm’s current advertising investment. “We have to communicate better what we’re doing, and that’s going to be part of an aggressive advertising plan, which is one more example of how Sojitz is going to be investing and injecting money into the local economy,” Quintero added.

ZF 6spd. A propósito, el 3.8L Track me va a costar $32k.
