Default Is This a correct PRELOAD?

hello, i purchased a set of bc racing coilovers from a member on here, however during the installation im not sure if he adjusted the preload, sent him a pm but while waiting for a reply i want to see what you guys think by looking at the pics. if they do not look correct, can someone tell me the measurements for the default preload?

another question i have (dumb question) is once the coilovers are on, if i want to lower the fronts, do i need to unbolt the shock body and adjust the lower spinning perch and spin the shock body up to match with the perch?

this is my first hyundai, i came from the honda scene so the coilover adjustsments for them is a little different. im assuming how you lower the front on the bc racings is what i mentioned above, if im wrong please let me know, thanks!

Preload is the amount of compression the spring has without any weight on it.

Front looks ok, don't know for sure though. Preload in the rear is almost maxed out. How much you want is mostly up to you though.

Preload in the front is easy to do. All you do is hand tighten the top collar while the strut is fully extended (basically while the front is on jack stands or lift) until the collar puts a very small amount of pressure on the spring so it can no longer move easily. Then you measure the length of the spring, and then take measurements as you compress the spring, with the measured amount being your preload. So if you shorten the spring by 10mm, then you have 10mm of preload.

The rear is mostly the same, just slightly harder to measure.

5-10mm of preload should be fine.

thanks for the info, i readjusted the preload in the front to be about 2" away from the top of the threading on the strut to give a less stiff ride. does this look ok to you? also, is it bad to have a preload in the picture below for the fronts and a nearly maxxed preload in the rears? id adjust it but you mentioned it was tricky so not sure if i want to mess with it. thanks

You can't tell preload from pictures... i'm not sure how Adamantine determined that the front looks ok??? Rear you set preload with the strut and just make sure the spring is snug in its housing. Front, well there's a youtube video from bc racing. OP: whatever you did there most likely messed up your preload, and i don't think you know what preload is and how to lower/raise your car. Check out DIY on bc coils in DIY section.

It looks like you lowered your front in that last pic, TC. Preload deals with the spring compression, not the height. For the rear, preload is done with the shock, ride height with the spring.

i lowered the previous preload to have less spring compression, tell me if im wrong but the more compression you have on the springs, the stiffer the ride correct? thats why i lessened the preload, if this is wrong let me know

also, yes i did lower my car, as well, its not by accident, i instaklled my coilovers and wanted to lower the fronts more.

tell me if im wrong on this as well, but to lower the fronts dont i just loosen the bottom ring and turn the whole shock body? if thats how your supposed to lower the fronts, then thats exactly what i did.

to summarize, theres two things going on in the pic:

1)wanted to lessen preload
2)wanted to lower fronts

you really shouldn't be adjusting preload. it shouldn't be necessary. but you are correct on how to do both things.

i bought the coilovers used and i believe the seller adjusted the preload, so it was already adjusted to begin with

Rear preload is 8-10mm, not too sure on the front.
