Default Agressive start (tire spin) with automatic

Ok so this probably sounds like a noob question but :
Ive noticed that getting the revs up in neutral then quickly switching to drive will work. (meaning lots of tire spin). Not sure why i tried this at first since i figured no automatic cars would normally allow that...

My question is : is it safe ? It really goes smoothly and seems harmless but
I dont want to destroy the transmission

Thanks !

It's called a Neutral drop, and yes, you will destroy your transmission.

Your only real option with an auto is to apply brake and gas at the same time. You can load up the torque converter with some revs, and then release the brake and mat it to take off.

Neutral-drop is the kind of abuse generally saved for field cars and rentals.

neutral drop....just don't do it...if you want an aggresive start....
Hold down the brake as hard as possible...start giving it gas till whatever rpm it allows...sorry I don't know what the stall speed is on the GC's....then let the brakes go

DON'T DO IT!
Sorry got a little excited there but really it is probably the worst thing you can do to an auto transmission.
I have no problem spinning the tires off the line with just a lot of throttle (can be expensive though both because of tires and local PD) but if you really want to spin your tires then you should "pre-load" the transmission, that means with your left foot hard on the brakes , give it some gas with your right foot (try to hold about 2000 rpm -approx "stall speed" of the stock torque converter) release brakes and hammer gas at same time. This will allow the converter to multiply the wheel torque available and produce the most spin (or if on drag slicks the best launch).

Edit: Wow I've got to learn to type faster "like they said"

Yeah, i was thinking of it as a simple viscous coupling and thought you had just put some neat sounding words in a string (poor assumption on my part, but i see too much of that on the 'net). Then right after typing it I realized my mistake. heh.

Its just that my friend just bought a mazda6 gt 2004 3.0l (220hp) and challenged me, figured i wouldnt beat him on my 2.0 with a slow start

Anyway thx guys, sry for being dumb

Just an extra word of caution.."pre-loading" the transmission does put a lot of extra strain on the torque converter "vanes" and they can metal fatigue and break if this is done too often !

you can turn off tcs and hold the brake and give it some gas and it will sit there and spin as long as you want it to... I wouldnt advise it but it does work.

so there really is no 'safe' way to launch the car

Well any kind of maximum torque "launch" is going to be hard on any car. If you have an auto and are worried about it get a heavy duty torque converter and rebuilt trans with upgraded parts, manual get a heavy duty clutch that can handle the abuse. If you don't want to do any of that then your safest launch is just full throttle.

^Full throttle works good when you have enough power

Once I had a rental Corolla and me and by buddies decided to see how much abuse it could take. We kept neutral dropping it from 7k rpm. Over 50 Neutral drops and it was still going fine (destroyed the passenger front tire though)

Not that I'm advocating that. Also, brake-torquing a transmission produces a LOT of heat. And the #1 killer of automatic transmissions is heat. Modern transmissions are much more efficient at dissapating that heat, but it will still catch up in the end.
