Perfect turbo (4 me)

I have finally found the perfect setup for 4 me. It is a modified t5o5-20g.
I have a T3 exhaust housing with a clipped turbine on the hot side. Cold side is a stock cast 20g wheel but with a 3inch antisurge larger A/R housing.. This thing starts spooling at 3k, and makes 25 lbs by 3500rpm. After clipping the turbine, it feels as strong at 10 lbs as it did at 20 at the lower end. On top, it pulls hard all the way to 8000rpm. Very smooth transition from off boost to on. This is bolted to a BR/dei cast manifold. Also have haltec, tomei cams. I wanted to try the clipping before going to a larger gtx turbo, but now, I just don't see any reason to upgrade. Absolutely perfect balance of power and driveability IMO.

Do you have poncams? What other supporting mods do you have to increase the rev limit from 6.8k to 8.0k?

If you don't mind me ask, how much did this setup cost you and where did you source the turbo from? Thanks

Glad to see you finally found a turbo you like

We ran a non-clipped 20g in the early stages of development and I always like the balance it provided. The bolt on 20g housing is restrictive and limits top end flow, but the T3 housing lets it breath and keep making power up top.

Are you using the genuine Mitsubishi 10Cm turbine housing or something else?

Not the 10cm thoiugh I wish it was! The ex housing I bought off uk ebay. It was advertised as 8cm. It spooled so fast that surge was an issue until I got the 3inch antisurge comp cover. It got rid of surge ,but 20lbs boost @ 3o0orpm's, it still just didn't feel right. At 6k it really came alive.
This I feel was due to less restriction of hot side spinning faster. Clipping the turbine wheel was the answer! 10lbs @ 3000 feels better than 20 did before. At 25 lbs 4500 to 8000 is VERY nice!
Never been on a dyno, but it will smoke an sti.

I did it in steps. I started out with a turbochargersdotcom td05-20g with a hyundai pattern exhaust housing. As Tim said, it chokes down on top. Then I picked up a br/dei cast manifold and the t3 flange housing. Next came 3inch comp cover, then a while later clipped turbine. Cost, hard to say cause I would always get it freshened up when apart. My pals over at the turbo shop I use could prolly build you one. If Tim can source you a t3 10cm housing, you could prolly forgo the clipping..

We had surge issues on the non-clipped turbo with the 10cm housing as well. Never got a chance to try the anti-surge housing but sounds like it would have fixed it.

I have a few 10cm housings and 20g turbo's here on the shelf. They make a great street setup if your not looking for crazy HP. They will certainly outflow anything with a bolt on housing. The cast manifold really is the ticket to making everything work. I also have a very nice silicone intake for tubos with a 3.0 in inlet.

Call me or hit me up here with any questions.

Thanks alot for the info. I eventually want to upgrade my turbo probably not within this year. I just wanted to see how involved it is which sounds like it is. More research to do!

So, a 8cm is way too small?
That's what I have, but it's not bolted on.

Are you referring to a genesis "bolt on" housing, or the T-3 style housing?

I have your manifold, with a 8cm housing.
I was looking for a bit more low end power, vs all of it uptop.

If your using the 20G compressor and the Td05h turbine, just get the anti-surge cover and it should make a pretty good combo. Its going to come in really fast and it might choke on the top, but I think you should be good for 330-350 whp before it get too restricted.

Get the turbine clipped! Best thing I did for this setup. If you install it as is, you will notice that it just doesn't feel right in the 3k range at 15 to 20 psi. It makes boost crazy fast, but the exhaust is sooo chocked down that it's not making the power it should at those boost levels. At higher rpm's, even though boost is only a bit higher, it rips. That's because imo, the exhaust can't get out of the head fast enough at the lower rpm range to let the fresh charge in.
