Hey guys. I’m running an HKS blow off valve on my 2012 Genesis coupe, and it makes that nice high pitch squeek when blowing off boost. I’ve always been interested in that flutter noise, and I’ve done some research on compressor surge, and different blow off valves and whatnot and I’ve decided to come to you guys.
I’ve heard that there are types of blow off valves that preserve some of the boost and the spring opens and closes fast giving off that flutter noise. I’ve been looking for so long and I’m not really sure what is true and what is false.
So guys, how do I properly and safely get that so desired turbo flutter noise. Thanks a lot!
The HKS blowoff valve features a replaceable fin for changing between the two available designs. I designed some of my own and I've been selling them locally. I'll PM you.
Turbo flutter is not good. It is not caused by the wastegate. It is not caused by the BOV. It is caused by pressure buildup in the system, as the engine cannot take in the air the turbo is producing. The pressure needs to go somewhere, and it's forced back out through the turbo inlet. The chattering is the sound of your compressor wheel chopping through the turbulent backpressure. This causes excess wear on the turbo. Turbo flutter happens most commonly when pressure is built up and the throttle is suddenly cut, leaving nowhere for the boost to go.
A turbo that is appropriately sized for the engine will not do this, as it will be more capable of handling the transition from high to low boost.
Chances are that you have a Chinese knock off and not a authentic HKS. There are actually very few authorized sellers. One that I know is authentic and can help you identify if you have a knock off is MAPerfprmance. Anything turbo is these guys domain.
HKS is a great and proven platform, BUT.................. They HAVE to be setup right, does not matter the size of the turbo. Can be large, can be small. HKS differs from alot, as you mentioned, that it can be set for pre-load.
Why people dont like HKS (It gets alot of bad rap),.......because they had it setup wrong.
Biggest most frequent mistakes:
1. Trying to run an HKS on ANY kind of solenoid setup. Say hello to p2261's out the bunghole !
2. Not using a full 1/4 ID vac line to service the valve. It has to have this.
3. Not using direct IM vacuuum. Related to the solenoid gayness.
Yes you can engineer your sound. I think the sound that you want has nothing to do what "flutter" actually is. Its not a good thing. Its like a boost build up ricochet with no where to go.
It happens for most when their spring in their bov is too strong for the vac provided to the bov, hence my above comments. YES fine tuning of your bov is integral for your turbos survival over the long haul.
PS the loudest release, and my favorite, is the TIAL Q. I had one on my 32 psi VT, all the dogs would start barking when my car was around. I would like to put one on my 3.8T, but my forge is doing its job splendidly so,...if it aint broke............................
