Exclamation OFFICIAL THREAD: Manual Transmission Issues

Per request, and to help minimize clutter, I have created a new thread for this issue similar to what I did with the Hood Alignment issue. First and foremost, I want to recognize Quartermaster for originally getting the ball rolling with his poll thread which you can read at:

Poll: 5th Gear grind survey for HMA mgmt

Hyundai Motor American Consumer Affairs will now monitor this thread to get an idea of who all is having this problem.

If you are having any type of major grind or issue with your manual transmission, please copy and paste the following:

Username -
Location (i.e. city, state) -
Engine/Trans/Trim -
Mileage -
To what degree is the problem? -
What have you done to try to get it fixed? -

THIS DOES INCLUDE CANADA as I am sure Mrs. Lenderman can relay the information for the community

Mods, if possible please sticky this for the time being to help HMA. Thanks.

Bill

An inconvenience now
Nothing to try and fix, will not take to dealer (Brown and Brown Hyundai, Bourbonnais Ill.) until it is so bad they cannot make excuses.

To what degree is the problem? - 4th to 5th & 6th to 5th. affects ability to merge on highways and slow down.
What have you done to try to get it fixed? - Dropping the car off at Hilton Head Hyundai on the 26th. Will replicate issue with service manager in car. I have not changed fluid from stock. i do not have my case number but have attached dealer info.

- 5th gear heavy grind unless very slowly shifted.
- violent 5th-4th gear downshift engagement (snapping/grinding sensation) unless very slowly shifted.

- Changed fluid to Redline MT90, noticed a vast improvement in shifting feel, ease of movement, and grinding was substantially reduced. Grind is still noticed especially in the downshift to 4th as it's obvious the synchros are taking forever to spin up.

To what degree is the problem? - i'd say that the problem is really annoying .. 5th gear is grinding all the time, second gear is really hard to engage when at slow speeds in city traffic...
What have you done to try to get it fixed? - nothing yet i'll contact the dealer to see what they will do ..

To what degree is the problem? - 2nd 4th, 5th, and sometimes 3rd and 6th grind (or otherwise make a 'clunk' noise when entering the gate). 1st is REAL tough to enter the gate when cold at a dead stop (pretty normal i think though).

What have you done to try to get it fixed? - waiting to see what others are doing. considered a fluid flush. I don't drive the car much, so it's not a huge issue to me at this time.

To what degree is the problem? - 2nd gear is extremely clunky. When it's cold out, 2nd gear will occasionally grind when shifting from 1st, or will block me out until I am doing less than 20km/h when downshifting from 3rd. With the exception of the clunkiness, all of this is only when the transmission is cold.

What have you done to try to get it fixed? - Waiting to see if the problem worsens, am considering changing the transmission fluid to a higher quality.

To what degree is the problem? - If I shift from 4th to 5th quickly before the rpm falls it grinds every time.

What have you done to try to get it fixed? -I wait an extra couple seconds for the rpms to fall before shifting. Getting Rev hang issue fixed by dealer now maybe the rpm falling to rev match quicker will fix this.

To what degree is the problem? - 5th gear has a clunk when shifting into it at 3000rpms or higher (just around highway speed of 100km/h).
What have you done to try to get it fixed? - Will bring to dealers attention on next oil change (within a weeks time).

To what degree is the problem? - every time you shift into fifth gear at a fairly high RPM you will hear a grind.
What have you done to try to get it fixed? - Nothing yet, waiting to see what happens...

To what degree is the problem? - at low speeds shifts are dificult to put into the appropriate gear. like shifting to first when rolling at under 10kph.

What have you done to try to get it fixed? - apparently changing the tramsmission oil really helps this but when i asked the local dealer they told me if i put anything but the recomender oil that it comes with then i will void my warranty. wich is rediculous if the car runs smoother then how would i be causing damage?...

To what degree is problem? Difficult to shift into 1st gear when engine is cold. Feels "crunchy" and bifurcated. I'm hoping that other problems don't develop later down the road.

To what degree is the problem? - shifting into first gear unless the car is totally stopped is impossible. 2nd gear is very notchy when trying to shift at higher rpm from 1st. In the morning until the car warms up trying to shift in the 2nd is like finding your way through a maze .Overall very very notchy!

What have you done to try to get it fixed? - talked to the dealer ,said its new and will get better when i break it in. Will bring it up again @ first oil change.

To what degree is the problem?: stiff shifting especially when cold. notchy clunky shifts especially 1 and 2.
What have you done to get it fixed?: Talked to dealer, waiting to see if it gets worse or better when fully broken in. getting rev hang reflash at dealer next week hope this helps with 1-2 upshift. waiting to see if there is a dealer or factory recomended trans gear oil upgrade to Redline or other brand , or a lighter viscosity gear oil, or synthetic oil.

To what degree is the problem? - Im really afraid when I shift into 5th gear, I do it 10 times slower then when I shift into any other gear. Sometimes it catches on 3rd gear too and grinds a little.

What have you done to try to get it fixed? -
Nothing...yet.

Like the third time I have done this but...

HardMacK
McKinze S.
Surprise, AZ
2.0T Track
5900 miles (now... first noticed 3500miles)

Degree of Problem - Any time shifting to 5th under power (ie Accelerating at any speed) fifth would grind, catch or otherwise not engage

Fix? - Dealer replaced all six syncro's and cones in transmission; Inspected by HMA Engineers. After 1000 or so miles fifth gear is now loose and feels gummy and numb, sometimes will not engage into gear without going back to neutral and reattempting shift. This occurs 6-5 and 4-5 at different speeds and clutch engagement points.

To what degree is the problem? -
1) Serious grinding on every upshift into 5th, occasional grind when downshifting. As if the gate is blocking the stick from entering.
2) Get transmission clunks in first through 3rd gear if revs are not perfectly matched.
3) Second gear can be near impossible to downshift into at certain times.
What have you done to try to get it fixed? - Brought it to my dealer's service department, they noticed the 5th gear grind, told me they adjusted something in the transmission and gave the car back but there was no obvious immediate difference and now it's worse than before I took it in. I am scheduling another visit. I do not want to bring it in a 3rd time for trial-and-error troubleshooting so I really hope there is some resolution and plan of action after they look at it again.

Very difficult downshifting 2 to 3 and 2 to 1 when the car is cold.
Very difficult starting off in first at times. It seems as if the throtle has a mind of its own.

I have driven standard shifts for over 30 years. This car ihas been the hardest to get used to.

I have done nothing about these problems so far. Waiting to see if there is a Hyundai fix. Otherwise I have chosen to live with the minor annuyance.
