Cobb Accessport for Gencoupe

Hey Guys -

A couple of weeks ago I was having a conversation over email with Trey Cobb, owner of Cobb Tuning.

They are the folks who make the rather popular AccessPort.

I was asking him about the possibly taking on the project of the gencoupe.

For those not familiar with the AccessPort here's what it does in a nutshell.
  • Reflashes the stock ECU with an off the shelf, more performance oriented map via OBD-II
  • Once flashed you do NOT have to leave it plugged in
  • Can be used to custom tune the ECU for your car through their very extensive network of Protuners.
  • This includes non-stock mods such as injectors, turbo, intake, ETC.
  • Read and clear error codes
  • Works with your stock ECU do you don't have to run a standalone system

Given that taking on a project such as a new car is rather expensive and time consuming Trey's response was that he wants to see how the gencoupe does in the aftermarket.

Personally we expect that the market for aftermarket parts for this car is going to be HUGE. As such waiting to see reaction and then waiting for the R&D to be done means that something like this can take a very long time to come out.

We'd like to demonstrate to him that this is a market that would really respond well to the AccessPort, and hopefully coerce him into looking into it sooner instead of later.

As such I would like to garner some feedback that we can share with him. In doing this please do NOT call, email, or flood their forums for requests. They are very busy people, and a disjointed and disorganized demonstration of desire will not make a good impression on them. Nor will it have the impact needed to sway them into looking into this soon.

Instead leave your post of interest here. I will then point them to this thread, and it will hopefully demonstrate to Cobb Tuning that this is a market that they should look into quickly.

I am most definitely looking forward to a tuning option for the V6. hell, a reflash is, so far, the most necessary mod for this engine.

Please

Gotta have some ECU support! In for the V6, but the 2.0t I think needs it even more with the hanging revs and misbehaving DBW.
I believe both engines misbehave. The 2.0t did well on their track times for as little power that it's suppose to have, while the 3.8 did poor on their track times for as much power as it is suppose to have. In this argument, the 3.8 needs the fix more so.
This would be awesome.

The only issue I heard and it will reflect, is that the V6 and I4 are using two different ECUs from two different manufactures.
Agreed. Hence why it's going to be two different ball games, one for the 2.0t, and one for the 3.8. That may be a reason to hold off until each market individually becomes ripe for a tuning/ECU fix solution.
obvously it should be made for the 2.0!

I don't see how the v6 would make a crazy amount of gains though with this kind of product.

I assume they'll make a 2.0t version for sure though, and I will buy it.
The V6 is the one that will make gains with simply an ECU flash, while the 2.0t will only make gains with upgraded parts. It's already been studied, and established. In Korea, all the 3.8's they've reflashed responded really really well, whereas the 2.0t is pretty much maxed out due to the size of the turbo. So, bang for the buck will be the 3.8 immediately, while the 2.0t may have to wait for people to start adding upgraded full turbo kits.
Really, though, it's painfully obvious that the aftermarket for this vehicle is going to be outstanding. Is he blind ? A savvy businessman like that should already KNOW about the aftermarket support for a vehicle like this MONTHS in advance.

Just look at AMS/Buschur/etc. They know the potential this has and jumped into R/D immediately. Does Cobb really think there won't be an aftermarket for a rear wheel drive turbo coupe? Are they smoking crack ? I'm pretty surprised they aren't already working on something for this.

By the time they get their **** together now there will be an OpenSource solution that will cut into their margins. Gotta be proactive in this business, not reactive, or you'll find yourself with little business.
We should realize that Cobb knows more than we do. It could be possible that they know nothing about the manufacturers of these 2.0t and 3.8 ECUs, and how they operate . It could be that they are lacking in funds due to the poor economy. It could be that they are lacking in Engineers, see the want ads, here: CobbTuning.com - Careers

It could be that the reason they easily jumped on other cars, was because they already had a similar application to another car, a simple re-engineering was needed, and not a full blown reverse engineering effort. For example, if they've done an application for a Nissan 350Z, then a Nissan GT-R may not be very different.
Alls fair in love and war :)

With that said, it still doesn't have any tuning option of the ECU, just MBC to my knowledge. Most Subarus either go through Cobb for their AP, if not they get custume tunes and/or use private (free) programs like RomRaider.

Also it needs more just to catch up to the 3.8 which already has a good amount of top end. Most sporty NA engines dont respond as well to ECU tuning alone than do turbos. Cobb can use that as a bragging point; "we gained 30hp/30tq from just a tune". This is just a guess but I can't see the 3.8 getting more than 10hp with just a tune. Maybe better power delivery...

My hope is that they also do a package tune for different turbos (ala the WRX w/ pink injectors and a VF34). My vote is for the disco and popular 600 injectors.
It all depends on what the manufacturer left on the table for tuners. It could be that it was left very restrictive due to meeting emissions goals, economy goals, engine longevity goals, etc etc. As for sporty NA engines, the Honda K-Series gained 35whp in the mid-range with ECU tuning alone, YES, ECU tuning alone... whereas, the Honda K-Series 2.3l Turbo gained only 26hp with ECU tuning alone. So, if you compare those engines, it's obvious the NA engine responded much more to tuning than the turbo engine... and it's obvious that more was left on the table with the NA engine rather than the turbo engine.

It's also been shown that the stock piping and turbo kit on the 2.0t is very restrictive and maxed out as is. Furthermore, even with with a full upgraded turbo kit, the motor has such weak components no has dared to go past 360whp. Albeit, 360whp is a good gain, nearly double from stock, but that's with a full upgraded turbo kit. It will cost thousands more to go further past those numbers, which arguably won't be too difficult to match by the 3.8.

Who really knows though. That's the point I'm making. Lets leave it to the powers that be, Cobb, AMS, SFR, etc etc.

So, it matters not what the stereotypes are, it's what is actual.

Also, it's already been shown that the 3.8 has gained 25-30hp with tuning:
http://www.gencoupe.com/3-8-v6/8890.../8890-how-306hp-v6-genesis-coupe-became-364hp-v6-genesis-coupe-dyno-graphs.html
so, your "guess" of no "more than 10hp" is way off, sorry to break it to you.

Would definitely buy... I would much rather run an accessport than have to wire in a piggyback or send out for a reflash all the time....and a standalone won't be needed for a while if we have all the features of the accessport to play with for awhile.

I've got money set away for ECU tuning already, if Cobb wants it they ought to get that accessport into production before someone else comes up with an effective, reliable solution.

V6 first please, the 2.0 is already getting plenty of attention.

The AccessPort is great - I have one on my STi.

I don't own a Genesis Coupe yet, but if I did I would have full support of Cobb developing one.

For those of you that don't know here's what you can do with the AccessPort:

0-60 time
virtual dyno
logging (yes, log with the AP and download it to your computer later!)
control functions like launch control RPM, basic timing changes
obviously reflash your ECU
live data gauges showing timing, AFR, boost, etc...

For cars with AccessTuner Race you can also do real-time tuning of the ECU with a laptop and the cable! It is hands down, the best $600 I have ever spent on my car.

It was intended for turbo models, as it is easier to coax power out of a turbocharged engine. However, they have it for the NA cars too, like the RX-8 and the 350Z\G35 so I'm sure the possibility of getting one for the V6 is pretty good.
