Aftermarket Horn Advice Please

I have a 13 and would like to get rid of the weak OEM horns.

After doing a lot of searching, I am even more confused than before I started.

I like the looks of the Red Hella horns but not too sure about their sounds. Sound clips on Youtube and other places make them seem rather harsh. Are they that bad in person? Or, does the harshness make them more noticeable. That is what I am really looking for. I want to be heard over other driver's radios and cell phones.

No doubt they are considerably louder than OEM but wish I could hear them in person for a comparison to mine to know how much louder.

Has anyone here done an aftermarket install on their 13+ and how difficult is it to get to the radiator for installation?

Also, any particular recommendations as to the brand of horns. Piaa, Hella, others???

BTW, I am not interested in going beyond legal limits, so loud Diesels are out of the question, although I would love to have them, But.....I just hate paying fines.

I believe 118 db is about the legal limit which is what the Hella units are.

Also, my research shows that PIAA horns are about 113 db.

Yah, I probably need my car horn more than most.

I live in a very rural area, however, most of my shopping is done in a large retirement town 15 miles to my north.

The average age of the drivers in this town is somewhere in the 80s. Many of these people have some hearing impairment and do not hear my puny horn, especially in parking situations at the Walmart when they are backing out of spaces.

We have all had those kinds of experiences in Walmart types of parking lots.

If I were to go to the trouble of replacing my horns I would get some used or rebuild Cadillac or Buick horns from the late 70's or early 80's. There are some places that specialize in rebuilding them.

Fantastic idea!

I am now looking into purchasing a set of four tuned 1980 Deville horns. The notes are A, C, D and F. 120+db so they are a heck of a lot louder than OEM and of legal limits.

They are in excellent condition and guaranteed for 2 years. Relay is also included if needed. I assume I will need it but not sure.

Thanks for the tip.

Nice idea... I'm going to have to look into that now cause I'm in the same boat... the horn on the 13 is virtually non-existent lol... i haven't had my car a year and have almost put 15k on her.

You will need to upgrade the wiring for these horns as the OEM wiring will be too small.

I planned on doing that anyway so as to not only prevent overheated wires but also to eliminate electrical loss.

Each horn pulls anywhere from 3 to 4 amps.

I ordered the quad horns with a relay today. I should have them within a week.

My plan is to install them on a separate horn button mounted on the dash and leave the OEM horn unscathed. The momentary button that I ordered is rated for 20 amps.

The regular steering wheel, OEM horn, shall be called, "I would be so grateful and pleased if you would be kind enough to move over just enough so that I may pass by"?

The aftermarket, 1980 quad Deville horns with the button on the dash will be named, "MOVE IT OR LOSE IT"!!

Now that everything is in hand, the fun begins. This will be a relatively lengthy project but should be a lot of fun and have great results.

Thanks to Red Raspberry's suggestion, this should be better than originally expected.

Horns are GM Delco, Cadillac Deville, Eldorado 4 note tuned bad boys. Total Db should be around 130.

Each horn pulls 4 amps so they are powerful. I have already bench tested them and they are definitely loud.

Also ready to go is the 20 amp horn button and 12 volt relay.

I have already run the heavy duty wiring into the cabin from the engine compartment for the horn button, so one of the more difficult parts of this project is already done.

It is done.................and well worth it. The sounds (4 horns make serious music) are fantastic.

I just finished putting the front end back on the car so it is back to its factory fresh condition with considerably better sounding horns and much more noticable.

As you can see, I kept the original horns installed and will only use the DeVille, Eldorado horns when I really mean business. Well, maybe a bit more often, but whose counting?

The OEM horns are still connected to the steering wheel and the Caddy horns are hooked up to a small button in the cabin very conveniently located near the SW.

I will post a sound file comparing both the OEM and Caddy Train horns as soon as possible.

Yes, these Cadillac horns sound like a diesel locomotive but the main difference is, these are legal but many of the aftermarket diesel horns are not. Particularly the ones that come with air compressors.

Again, I wan to thank Red Raspberry for the great Idea to use Old Iron horns as opposed to the crappy sounding aftermarket horns that are out there now. Initially, I almost ordered the Hella horns but really did not like the horrible raspy sound that they have. The old GM sounds are beautiful, and attention getting.

I actually owned several of these marvelous GM cars many years ago and had forgotten the engineering that went into their horn sounds. Most were unique to many of the different GM brand names.

As far as difficulty for this project is concerned, considering time and effort, I would rank it an 8.0 out of 10.

If you choose to eliminate the OEM horn and just use a 12 volt relay to power the aftermarket horns from the steering wheel, it will make it a bit easier. Perhaps a 7.5. Remember, these horns pull about 16 amps so a relay is very necessary, especially if you plan to use the original SW horn button.

I'm 69 years old, and old fart drivers make me nuts! I drive my car like I stole it just to stay away from the aged with the inability to drive properly! And while I am at it, what is with these idiots who feel the need when making a turn to swing out in the opposite direction before making that turn? I've had more than a few almost take out my fender because they make that wide swing!

Hey Fritz, speaking of old farts, I am 73 years old and they make me crazy too.

When I was a kid (14 years old), I learned how to drive in Chicago traffic from a professional driver. He was not a Pro instructor but drove for a living across the U.S. as a sales person. It was in a 53 Buick with no power steering or brakes and a manual, 3 on the tree, tranny.

I also learned that when I make a turn, either left or right, I stay in my own lane until I signal for a lane change.

The oldies believe that their Crown Vics are 30 feet long so they need to make a left turn before they make a right turn.

Now that I have two sets of horns, I may have to use both the OEM and Caddy blasts at the same time. Of course, only in special circumstances.

I tried that yesterday in the garage right after I completed the installation of the Eldorado units and between both sets, it makes quite a racket.

And after listening to your vid, I now need a hearing aid! LOL! Good work! I may do this, since Vegas is a place where a horn is needed regularly!

BTW, Jason Statham, "The Transporter" taught me to drive! LOL! I wish!

Jason Statham, eh? Good one.

I kinda like Nicholas Cage "Gone in 60 seconds". That's my favorite movie and when I am feeling a bit down, I put it in the DVD player and get my fix.

Helps clear a lot of frustrations.

My 04 Cobra used to do it for me but now that it's gone, I have to revert to the movie. The Coupe doesn't drift as easy as my Cobra did. Especially in our newly paved church parking lot.

My new horns were a hit at church this morning. I got to blast a few friends while pulling into the parking lot. Several people asked what I did to make them so noticeable. All were surprised to hear that they came from "Old Iron".

I believe in recycling........ For the good of the nation, of course.
