Stock t.body back-0 shut downs!

...So after about 7 shut downs, 1 near rear end collision and 2 failed attempts to retrieve a code...I put the stock throttle body back on. Since then I have logged on about 1600 km's (1000 miles), without a single problem. But then again, I was not expecting any. Too bad because the bigger throttle body did increase the performance.
...I contacted George over at Maxbore and plan on sending it back. From what he sais on his website each throttle body he receives gets inspected and tested before he tears it apart and when he is done to ensure everything is in working order when it is sent out. I don't know if it's a mistake on his part.....or perhaps the only way it's going to work good on my coupe is with a dyno tune regardless of some of the comments on here saying it should work with the stock ecu.
...so far, I am quite dissapointed with the outcome.

I had a TB bored out for my 2L. It worked good at higher rpms but had a bad lean tip in from idle. Got a tune update and it does not work at all. It sets a code and goes into limp mode.

Unless you can program the ECU for the extra air you will have problems I believe.

...Is there a chance that if I bring the bigger throttle body with me to put back on and get dyno tuned that it will shut off again on the way back home...or will this problem be eliminated for good? Would you chance it? Being 1000 miles from home and having shutdowns would have me pulling my hair out of my head...lol

If your tuner can adjust the air for the larger throttle body then all is good. If they can't it will not be fixed. Ask them.

....What I find insane is that it would work great for 500 miles or so and then out of the blue. ..it shuts down. You would think the first time you mash the throttle it would shut down then. I guess that's technology for ya.

My next car will not need a cbe, intake, bigger throttle body or a tune. It's going to be fast enough stock....05+ corvette. 400+hp and 400+pound foot of torque. Probaly not for another year or two down the road..For now I am going to concentrate on getting this coupe dialed in.

Thats been my thinking, its not like the old days with carburators and distributors. Less headaches to just buy a car that has enough power for my tastes, drive, and enjoy. YMMV.

...I have been to the dark side and back. Pulling out to pass a line of drivers and being on the outside lane doing about 80 mph and having your car shut off is something I will not soon forget nor EVER want to repeat again!

lol why would you buy a corvette then do none of the things that actually make it quicker? Thats one of the few platforms that actually make the most gains with boltons.

And yes, even bolton corvettes need tunes to help all the boltons work together. Every car does. You cant just bolt up parts that augment the airflow characteristics without compensating for it, unless you go into the wayback machine and grab something carb'd.

I decided to go with a bigger throttle body because of some of the positive results that I read from a few members who have tried it with no problems. If I would have thought there was a chance of it shutting down I would not have bothered. It's like anything you get used to the power. When I first got my coupe I thought the power was awesome for about 2 weeks until I got used to it. I also traded a vehicle in towards it.I think I would be satisfied with the torque of the vette stock without any mods.

Unless you have a senior citizen discount, you will mod it. Cmon man, thats one of the best platforms for modding, aside from the corvette tax on parts.

Theres not even really a corvette tax. Those engines are used in everything so parts are easy to find and cheap

I really liked the results with the bigger throttle body. It felt stronger everywhere in the Rev range. I would love to see this 3.8 with the bigger throttle body and a dyno tune. I think it would really haul ass for a v6.

Sorry to hear man. No problems here. About to spray meth into it so we'll see how it holds up. But you don't need to do anything to run it, the car will handle out no problem. Just installed a bigger tb on the srt and it didn't change afrs at all, same story on the coupe. Just a bad tb is all.

Titan, the throttle body and sensor that was sent to Maxbore was a new unit. Before and after all mods were done to the tb it was supposed to be tested to make sure everything was in perfect condition. This is why I am sending it back to George at Maxbore. If the throttle body was a dud, or if he made a mistake in re-setting the tps, boring ect..the problem should have been found before it got shipped out to me.

Well, I hope it was a simple mistake on maxbore's part, but i'm doubting it. Unfortunately he can't do much to test other than make sure everything is in place. It would be nice if it were something simple he didn't do or maybe an oversight (though that doesn't give him any points), because then you can get back to enjoying your TB. If it were me, I would try swapping the "Good" guts from the working TB to the bored TB and see what happens.

What did you pay for the new TB?

...I was actually talking to him a few hours ago on my break. I said I would be shipping it back next week. He's going to look it over good. It only worked good for a day or so. I'm thinking this problem should have been found before it left his shop. The new TB was about $170 from four greens auto parts.

hope it works out. That's not a bad price for a TB, will need to pick up a spare for myself.

...I should be hearing back from Maxbore in the next few days on the status of the throttle body. I am hoping he finds a problem. But with my luck....it will be the opposite.
