Question Difficulties with selling a modded Genesis...

I've been trying to sell my car for the past year with absolutely no luck whatsoever. There's ZERO interest in my area for these cars unless I sell it for 5 grand less KBB's value lol... I am out of ideas and I need to sell it, not really desperate, simply have no interest to hold on to it much longer... Question is - if you were in the same shoes with your gencoupe, what did you have to do to sell it? Should I try eBay? My main problem is that I don't have ANY stock parts and I am on stage 3 (at least that's how most people call it), so going back to stock is not an option at this point mainly due to ridiculous prices on used parts... I don't bother posting to gencoupe FB group because all they do is sh!t at everything people post.

Thoughts?

How are you pricing it vs NADA/KBB/etc..? People don't like paying a lot extra for mods on cars.

Dyno sheets can help sell modded cars.

I keep all of my stock parts so I don't end up in a situation like this though. At some point maybe just take the hit and move on.

'13 2.0T R-Spec

  • MXP exhaust manifold

  • Snow Performance Stage 2 meth kit

  • Wing Badges
  • CF "functional" hood vents
  • Tablet install w/ custom LCD relocation

I understand all that but what doesn't make sense is the fact that 90% of gencoupes undergo customised through tuning of some sort sooner or later. It's a tuner car at the of the day. My spec list is pretty lengthy but my major parts are TurboXS TXS400 (TD06 SL2 20g) turbo, DW 750 injectors, all possible boltons, suspension, etc; getting plenty of compliments on it to this day. I hate to let it go but it's time to move on. KBB's value is a little over 10k in excellent condition, NADA value is $9,225 accordingly. I am asking what KBB is calling it for. Back when I was doing all this, I never even thought of a day on which I wouldn't want to own it anymore; therefore, was selling stock parts left and right to save space in my garage. Lesson learned. Buying all the parts back is not a viable option because I don't think it would justify my time.

mods reduce value unless you sell to someone with your exact taste.
general perception is mods = trashed.

Everyone should know that when you mod a car and try and sell it, it will be a loss. To go further, the GC is nit a classic Mustang, Camaro or Mopar to where a retro-mod would bring in value. Our cars would have no value at a BJ or Mecum auction. With that said, selling a modded GC is tough, its either to the right person who wants just what you did or to someone who will take it but offer significantly less due to the inherent risks.

Do you have a Carmax or the like near you to see what they would give?

As I said previously, when I was all into it, I never thought of a day when I'd want to sell it. It was basically like not pulling out with hopes she'd get her period LOL but I let it go for $10k this morning... It was hard to see it go and frankly, it was the only person that came with cash for the past year. I listed it for 11, but he brought 10 and I threw the keys. With that said, never modding a hyundai anymore.

Yeah I am in Memphis. As long as you hold on to your OEM parts you should be able to trade in at the least, although I see stock gennys for sale all the time, so IMO stock or not, it's just hard to sell them.

Try to find some locals with stock parts. Sell off your modded stuff. Sell car as stock.

These cars are very niche and without a big aftermarket to garner demand for this platform, resale is ****. The unfortunate thing too is Hyundai didnt consider these as the "Genesis" brand and have it carried under the Genesis branding once they get upgraded dealerships, which wouldve helped keep the platform a bit more elevated too. Now they're just some failed Hyundai RWD sportscoupe experiment from 2010-2016.

I THINK,... your car is super clean, dude! Hahahhaha, I wish mine had stayed looking that nice. But then, I do take it on a lot of wild 2k+ mile road trips... Why don't you contact some west coast shop and offer to pay for shipping if they buy it? Should truck out for about $1k. Kids out here will swing at that thing for 10 G's all day long. Looks perfect. Just needs a little "secret smog shop" action to be viable. Ha, that's your real problem, isn't it? No time to do the legwork to find the right buyer.

Thanks! But no, it's just everyone is hella cheap in the south... That's the real problem. Everyone wants something good but don't want to pay. I don't have connections in the west coast and frankly my car isn't really anything that special. I didn't trash it in the modding process, there's no secrets lol... I thought about putting on eBay got after one bad experience I decided not to. I sold my stock turbo on there and the guy who bought attempted to initiate a return and send me his old, blown turbo telling eBay that I sold him a bad part. After that I don't sell on eBay. With that said, it's either I sell locally or not at all. It's not about finding the right buyer either. If someone's really interested in it, they will find me. That's how I look at it.

It depends how you market the product and your tags.i sold gen coupes on Craigslist Everytime. Posted it on fb letgo and offer up even ebay seems Craigslist is good. Have some tags in your post so when people search something else your cr pops up.dont make it too long but make it simple and explained.

If I'd known I would have bought it:/ 10k isn't bad really. What was the mileage? I think the only turn off I'd have is the super dark window tint and non stock wheels. Not a major issue but wouldn't pass our local checks. Aside from that I'd be driving 8 hours to see her. The car looks great but it would stand out to cops too much up here in the Northeast. The engine mods are great too, most people would accept them gladly. What's under the hood would rarely be seen after all....

Well that explains why you've had it for sale for so long.

And that's OK. At least I didn't have to beg anyone to buy it, if that's what you consider "finding the right buyer". It was worth the wait.

It was right at 85k. The tint was "legal" i.e. 35%, not sure why it looked so dark in the pics.

I would think gencoupes are a lot more popular where you are. I only had it posted on craigslist this whole time with occasional renewal. I'm sure if I used other places I would have had much better luck, but it's fine that it took me a year to sell it. I was not on hurry or money hungry. Also, if you use tags that don't relate to your ad, CL will block your ad without notice. Happened to me a few times. If you're selling a hyundai but use honda, toyota etc tags on teh bottom, they will block your ad. It's not as easy anymore.

Really??? That's a bummer. I used to do a whole essay of those tags at the bottom of my car part descriptions when I sold my Honda parts. Got hits in the first hour because of em lol

From what I've heard from friends in the selling game modifications can actually "decrease"the vehicles value. It's like owning and remodeling a house... If you don't have permit document's etc. People assume it wasn't done properly. Often our mods are done by owners, so something similar applies.

You might have some luck with a vehicle consignment shop. They'll do the work to sell it for you, for a small percentage. You could also try Carmax, but the same rules above might apply.
